..since we are all just getting aquainted, I thought it might be nice if you saw my home…. We have lived here since September 1, 2006. It has been a challenge, moving from 2600 sq.ft to 2000 sq.ft. Our new home is on the marina, and only steps away from my husbands life-long dream…his boat!

It has been so much fun decorating this house because it is everything I have always wanted…”a cottage by the sea”. I wanted it to have a true coastal cottage feel….we’re getting there, but do you really ever finish decorating??? I am constantly changing things around, finding new treasures, and of course changing my mind.

I would welcome any comments or suggestions you might have for me, and hopefully I can inspire you as well…let’s get going!

1. alli, Your house looks darling. Nothing like a cottage by the sea.
I love the picket fence and the yellow color of your house. Small houses are great. I have one too. Very cozy and easy and fun to decorate. Take us on a tour inside when you can.

2. Alli,

Your house reminds me of a pretty little house in Better Homes and Gardens. How lovely!

5. Alli, your new home is beautiful! So often, I hear people say that someday they would like to live in a cottage by the sea … and that dream has become a reality for you and your husband! I especially love the white picket fence, the exterior colors and the two porches. You wrote that you would welcome any suggestions or ideas … have you thought about adding shutters to the windows? You might also consider adding a touch of millwork to the corners of the posts and beams on each entry … the design style could be Victorian or even something that you plan and draw yourself. Best wishes to you in your lovely new home, Alli!

6. Thanks Kathi….I have considered shutters, I would love to use them but in this particular neighborhood, no one uses shutters. I agree with you I think it would give the house a real “pop”! I may run it by the architectural review board anyway……
Thanks for your kind words and suggestions. Hope you are enjoying the “blog”
Take care!

7. Hi Alli,

I was just looking through the site and came across the picture of your home. It is, as everyone else has mentioned, darling. The shutters are a great idea, but how about continuing the window box to all of the windows. You could definitely add pops of color if you had one under each window on the larger portion of the home. The shrubs on the lower right would need to be trimmed back in order to accomodate a window box there, but I think it would look great. I have a friend who is also a creative consultant and she uses her window boxes to decorate each season. This spring, she added a collection of 5 different bird houses set just on top of the greenery she added to the bottom of the basket. She only decorates one of the window baskets and it is always the one on the bottom left. Just a thought! Really enjoying this site.

8. Hi Alli,
I am new to this site and I have to tell you I am having a ball with it!! You and your husband must be so thrilled to have your dream of a place by the sea..it is a darling house..and I bet you really have had fun decorating it. I too am on a new adventure called retirement..I am 57 yrs old and worked in a vocational high school as a teacher assistant for almost 20 years…we just built a brand new patio home 1700 sq feet in south west Florida..and I too am just beginning to decorate it. We also own a older home in the Buffalo New York area so I guess you can say we are now offically snowbirds..having 2 homes has definately put me on a decorating budget..so I am so happy to have found the homegoods store in Venice Florida..I love it and go there often. I would love to see pictures of the interior of your home and have enjoyed viewing everthing you have posted on this site….good luck Margie

9. Margie,
Thank you so much and congratulations on your retirement!! My husband and I do feel truly blessed and love our “cottage by the sea”.
I am so glad you found HomeGoods….I must warn you though, it is addictive! To quote a famous decorator, “but that is a good thing”. Seriously, HomeGoods has lovely quality things at very reasonable prices…..let the shopping begin!
Have fun and tahnks again,
Alli

10. LOVE the house! I think a few flower boxes around the upper and lower bannisters would be adorable. If you do color blocking (all one color of flowers) it would really be stunning! Perhaps your daughters favorite color of whites with greenery would set it off best.

11. Love your sea side home! I would do black shutters and doors. Windowboxes in black and put chunkers posts in. Can see above the door an antique piece (forget what it is called) to make the door look longer. Salvage Yards would have them from old houses. I bought one at a garage sale in Stillwater, Minn. years ago. It is heavier than all get out! As it is iron. Surrounds the door and a decorative piece above the door. Brought it back to Calif in our RV. So cool! But sits in the garage waiting for a potting shed or guest house. Enjoy your enchanting house by the sea!
