We remodeled our kitchen a few years ago. It was pretty bad before. I wanted the cottage feel of white cabinets but a little drama with the black and red accents. Its a much happier place to cook in now. All of the red accessories and wall decor came from HomeGoods. Its so great to go to one place and find everything you need and save a lot of money.

1. i just tried to give a diffrent look in my kitchen. I did the same color scheme as you , but I painted my kitchen red and used just black tiles. My cabinets are lite wood color. I used the chef theme to decorate.
I just love your kitchen. Is ther anyway you can send me all the details of your kitchen from the color of the walls to where you got you chairs. When it’s time to change again I would like to use your kitchen as a sample.

Thanks.

2. I love your kitchen. I would like to know what type of light fixture you used in the ceiling. Was this a drop ceiling at one time? It looks great. I have a drop ceiling in my kitchen and would like to create the same look you have in yours. Please let me know.
Thanks

3. Hello Mercedes and Nancy,
In answer to your questions about my kitchen…(thank you for asking)…
The color on the walls is a color called Belgian Waffle by Olympic Paint. Its a “wheat” color. a golden beigh. The chairs were white and I painted them black. You might be able to find them in an unfinished furniture store or check online. The counters are granite called “Impalla”.
“Kraft Made” kitchen cabinets in a shaker style. The ceiling lights were a redo of old long flourescent lights ( set in the recessed ceiling area) We took them down and then painted and added 6 recessed lights and 2 pendent lights. Its a small but functional kitchen.

4. I absolutely love your kitchen!!! I have old Merilatt white Bay Cabinets that are open at the top with crown molding. Right now I have pale yellow walls, grey laminate countertops and red and black accents in the room. I also have an oak colored laminate floor that looks great against the white cabinets!!

I want to replace my countertop with granite and couldn’t decide on a color. After seeing your kitchen, my mind is made up! I am going to go with a black granite countertop. I absolutely love black, white, and red together!! I think the black and white will be timeless! I may just go with a white tile blacksplash, but I love your checked blacksplash!!

Your kitchen is gorgeous!!! Where did you get your bar stools? Also, what color is your granite. Is it pure black or are there specks of another color in it?

by Sandy — 10/8/07 at 11:16 pm #

5. Hi Sandy,
Thank you so much. I’m glad you like my small but comfy kitchen.
The granite I used is called “Impala”, not a solid black. It has little colorations of grey, taupe, black. I chose it for its color, simple pattern, and ease of upkeep. The solid black granite (Absolute) is harder to keep looking nice, for me anyway.
It shows lots of streaks and prints, like a mirror. Its also very formal.
I wanted a relaxed casual (but elegant) feel. I’ve like it very much.
My bar stools I picked up at a local furniture store. They were white, I sanded them and painted them black. I have seen this style in many places.
Yes, Black and white is always a classic combination. Timeless. You can add different accessories and colos to update and renew from time to time.
Good luck with your kitchen. It will be wonderful.

6. Hi Cathy,

May I ask where you purchased your countertop? So far, I have looked at Home Depot, and Lowes. Both of them get their Granite from Great Lakes Granite and Marble. I like the idea of having different colors within the stone.

Also, I now have white appliances, and I think my kitchen looks dated with white. May I also ask which appliances you have. I love the look of your stove and microwave. Your kitchen is absolutely beautiful! BTW, whenever I look at magazines, it seems I’m always drawn to black and white. Even on a dreary day, your kitchen will look bright!

7. Hi Again Sandy,

We did have Home Depot do our kitchen. Granite countertops as well. (of course, they contract out). I would think you could get most of the same granite nationwide. Our appliances were purchased from a local dealer. All my appliances are KitchenAid except for the microwave, its GE profile. (I liked something better about it for some reason). You really can mix most of the SS appliances. Some features you’ll like better from one maker to another.
Thanks again for all your nice comments. I know your kitchen will look great!

8. Hi Cathy,

I love your kitchen! I just recently purchased a new home. The kitchen has the exact same back splash and white cabinets. The only difference I see is the floor is ceramic grey and the counter tops are grey granite. The walls are plain white. I am looking for a little color in the kitchen and am curious as to what color yellow you have on your wall and where you purchased the exact paint so I know I am getting the correct color? I would greatly appreciate your help in trying to add color into my new kitchen. If you have any other color ideas feel free to help me :) Thanks,

by Melissa — 1/29/08 at 2:18 am #

9. Thank you Melissa,

It sounds like great minds think alike! LOL. I’ve enjoyed my kitchen and the high contrast colors are never boring. You asked about the wall color. Its in my kitchen and runs into my family room as well. A great warm golden wheat color.
The name of the color is “Belgian Waffle” Its from Olympic Paint and I got mine through Lowes Home Improvment Center. Its not too yellow or too beigh, its just right. I think you’ll like it.
Good Luck.

10. Cathy, although the pretty framed artwork that you have in your dining area isn’t shown in the picture, do you mind telling us the name of the print (the one above the rustic console)? I’ve never seen it before and was just curious.

by Janice — 3/13/08 at 10:55 am #

11. Hi Janice,
That picture I picked up at a model home close-out store a few years ago.
Its a print, but I don’t know the artist or the title of the work. Sorry I can’t help you with that. I wish I knew too. I just liked the piece and thought it would work well in my dining room.
Sorry.

12. Cathy, I love the kitchen…I have a resemblance but we are adding some more to it…I wanted black granite counter tops but unfortunately not able to do so do to the support on the cabinet next to the refridge…
we have a black and white checked floor, white cabinets and I am going to replace the hardward with the brushed stainless or nickel…We went with black laminate counter tops and also a black acrylic sink…is yours black…?if so any hints on keeping it..the sales person at Lowes suggested car wax on the sink…also we got a new Black Bosche dishwasher…so the other appliances are white for now…am deciding if we should go with stainless, black or white…( which I am a little partial to). Where your counter is we have a dining room wall there which we had considered removing some but have decied againt…we have a high stainless table with black and stainless bar stools…and also my accents are the red toaster coffee maker and a black and red lamp on the table…
the walls are white..
Our house is strictly black, white, and animal print…which I love.
any suggestions…I would appreciate.

13. Hello Susan,

We are thinking along the same line in our kitchens. I’m glad you’re enjoying yours. It’s so nice to have everything updated and working.
My sink is a product from Blanco. It’s a granite composite in a black/grey.
I’ve really liked it, except when I use Soft Scrub on it, it leaves a little white power residue. So I’m happy to hear about the car wax on the sink, acts as a sealer. That may help rinse the sink better. I’ll give it a try.
As for your appliance finishes, you could go with any you mentioned…black, white or stainless. I would just try to get them all in the same finish. All stainless, black or white.
Just replacing the hardware to stainless or nickel will update as well.
Love your black and white floor. Always a classic.
It sounds like your doing a great job with everything else. I think just keeping the clutter to a minimum is the key to enjoying the kichen as well as any room.
Good job! I know you’re your enjoying your home.
Thanks for your great remarks.

14. Cathy,
I am using your black and white kitchen theme for redoing my kitchen. Attached is a photo of what mine looks like so far. I’m not sure if I should keep my walls the same yellow color as the rest of the area open to the family room. you can see both colors on the column here.
my other rooms in my home such as my bedroom and living room are painted a pretty yellow/gold with black and red accents. Please advise on what i should paint my walls in the kitchen and great room area.

by Dawn — 4/7/08 at 11:22 pm #

15. Cathy,
I asked you in my previous email about what color to paint my walls in my kitchen and family room which is one big room. If I continue with the yellow gold color but in a lighter version of what is in my living room, and master bedroom, will this give my home better flow of color and just pick up accent colors of red in my accessories. I love to decorate with reds at christmas. I love your approach to decorating.

16. Hello Dawn,
Thank you for your comments.
You’ll love your black and white kitchen. Unfortunitly, I did not get your pictures. Can you go up to “Customer Finds” at the top of the page and click on “submit yours”, and send them that way. I’ll look for them there. Thanks so much, I’d love to see them.
To answer your question without the pictures…
Pick 2 or 3 shades of the gold paint you like on the same paint chip. Look in the mid range of the chip. Paint the family room the darker shade of the color and the kitchen the lighter shade, or vice versa . If a kitchen wall runs into the family room continue the same color to a corner. The shade changes will separate each area but will all blend as a whole. On open floor plans, its nice to delineate rooms by shade changes of the same color. The visual flow is less chaotic but more interesting than one color. Look at a post I wrote, titled, “Wall Color Idea ” for more information.
Your red accents and Christmas decor will work well with your color palette. Your headed in the right direction. It should look great.

by Cathy — 4/8/08 at 1:23 pm #

17. Hi Cathy,

My husband and I did black granite tile on our counter top and the same black and white tile backsplash as you have done. I am bringing in red accents as you suggested but wanted to know what you think about using zebra black/white canisters instead of the white like you’ve done. I found the canisters on my last visit to Homegoods and really like them. i am changing my appliances to stainless a little at a time and will be doing stainless handles on the cabinets.. Just need you opinion as to whether itis too busy with the pattern of the blacksplash. Also is it better to leave my cabinets in the cream color or is there a way i could make it a bit more funky with painting them in black. what do you suggest.

Thank you
Dawn

by Dawn — 7/9/08 at 7:56 pm #

18. Hello Dawn,

I’m so glad you have your kitchen underway. So far it sounds great. I think a little of the zebra on the canisters is fine, even with the B/W backsplash. Just don’t overdo…a little zebra goes a long way. Just an accent in the room. If you love it and it looks good…use it.
As for your cabinets. No, you don’t have to stick to all white/cream top and bottom. You could leave the top cabinets in the white color and paint the bottom cabinets in the black color. Or paint the cabinets in an island black and leave the rest white. Or, leave all the cabinets, trim, drapes, in the white and paint all the wall area BLACK, yes, black. Super chic! use some red accents for color. This could look great. Many ways to go.
Let me know what you think. You sound adventurous…go for the WOW factor!

21. LOVED YOUR kITCHEN. I also am doing B/W kit. But mine is B/W toile. Iam having trouble finding Decor to finish it. I have 3 plates and one Tea pot but that is all I can find. The walls are B/W Toile wallpaper on bottom, with White paint on top wall. White chairrail divides it. all cabnits are white. I want to do a Black floor but think it may be too small a room. So far I love it. If you know of a place that has B/W Toile ceramics please let me know. Keep up the hOMEGOODS. Nonia G

by Nonia G — 10/27/08 at 11:44 pm #

22. Hi Nonia,

Thank you so much. I love the black and white toile as well. It sounds like you have a bit of it in your kitchen. If you can’t find more toile. Add a geometric with it…like black and white checks or stripes or diamonds on curtains, seat cushions, table runners, cannisters etc. You could do and oversized black/white checkerboard floor. Just don’t overdo, add it in as an accent pattern. Could look really great and add some geometry to the “toiley” decor.
Just a thought. It sure sounds cute whatever you do.

23. love your kitchen …. My colors are somewhat the same … I painted my cabinets white … then I try painting the bottom black …. I did like them but I realized that I have solar screens which makes the kitchen dark at times … So I am painting the bottom back white as I speak to you now …. thank you for showing your kitchen very well thought out …..

24. In response to everyone’s questions about black granite – black is the most difficult color to maintain. I own a kitchen showroom in California and carry Caesarstone. This product is one of the most durable on the market; comes in dozens of colors and one of the newest most elegant ones is Smokey Ash. It’s a blend of mostly black with a few dark gray specs along with recycled glass. I just had it installed on a counter in my showroom with white cabinetry and it is elegant, timeless and indestructible. Check it out. KitchensofWestlake.com

by Robin — 1/23/09 at 10:54 am #

25. Hi Robin,

I’ve found if you get a black counter top. Find a stone or manmade product that has some flecks and specs of color in it as you said, instead of a solid black…it is hard to keep clean and look shiny. You have the right idea. Thanks for the info on Caesarstone, a great product.
I’ll check out your site.

26. Have moved into a new home with a black and white kitchen, too. I have two questions. How do you keep the granite countertops clean, ie products etc? I have been using windex but fear I may be harming them. Also, how about adding several colors. I have been thinking brick red, olive green and an old world gold in small splashes. Do you think this is to much?

by kathy — 2/13/09 at 6:11 pm #

27. Hello Kathy,

Your new home sounds wonderful and also your black and white kitchen. Granite counters are beautiful, but you want to keep them looking that way. I would be a little hesitent about using Windex on them. All you need to do for daily clean up is use a little soapy water and dry them. Or you can buy cleaning products made especially for natural stone surfaces. Once a year you need to “seal ” the counters with a stone sealer (easy to do yourself). This seals the porous surface to resist stains and discolorations.
As for your other colors you like in the kitchen, I think they are fine. Just use them in differing amounts/proportions in the room and they will work well with the black and white.

Enjoy decorating your new kitchen. It sounds like it will be a colorful and creative place to cook in.

by Cathy — 2/16/09 at 1:38 pm #

28. Cathy,

I absolutely love your kitchen! We, too have a rather small kitchen with all white cabinets, white tile countertops, and white appliances. I’m thinking of doing black and white stripes. Since everything else in the kitchen is white, would you recommend the stripes be above or below the chair rail in order to make the room appear larger (if that’s possible). We also have a white, country style, eat-in kitchenette. Do you think painting the chairs and chair legs black would be too excessive? Any other suggestions are most welcome!

by Lori — 2/28/09 at 11:03 pm #

29. Hello Lori,

Thank you so much. Your kitchen sounds wonderfully white. Yes, I think the graphic black stripes would look sharp! A few ways you could paint the stripes…

* Paint wide 9″ black/white stripes above your chair rail and solid black below (you have so much white, this will work well).
* Just paint the biggest accent or corner walls the wide B/W stripes, floor to ceiling.
* How about wide B/W “horizontal” stripes. Divide your wall (s) into 5 big stripes. Looks more contemporary, but super sharp. (remember, it’s only paint so be creative).

I think painting the chairs black would look good with the white table, repeats the high contrast theme. .

Add a few natural elements into the mix so it doesn’t look too stark. Maybe wood floors, a pine table, plants, natural woven shades on the windows, bowl of red or green apples.

I would love to see a picture when you’re done. How exciting it will be!!

by Cathy — 3/2/09 at 1:20 pm #

30. Hi Cathy,
I am also doing a black and white kitchen. I have been searching for a light golden wall color. In previous postings you mentioned 2 different paint clors. Belgiain Wheat by Olympic and Belgian Waffle by Duncan Edwards. Which of these colors are you showing in your picture.
I think its a great color and would love to see if it would work for me. I also have to run the color into a narrow hall and foyer. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the great pictures and any advice you can give.
Jo

by Jo — 4/13/09 at 7:52 am #

31. Hello Jo,

Sorry for the confusion on the paint color. I’ll go back and revise.
The paint color in the kitchen is Belgian Waffle by Olympic Paint. It’s a great golden beige, not too yellow or too beige. I think you’ll like it. Try a sample first in your light before committing to the color. It would look good in a hall and foyer because those areas usually don’t get much light and a yellow, more than a white, will lighten and brighten the space. I think you’ll be happy with the color.
Let me know how it comes out.

by Cathy — 4/14/09 at 11:12 am #

32. I love your kitchen. We are going to remodel our kitchen with white cabinets also. I was wondering if your cabinets are theromfoil and iif so are you happy with them. If not do you know anything about them?

Thanks
Carol

by Carol — 4/18/09 at 7:39 am #

33. Hello Carol,

Thank you so much, Yes, my cabinets are the thermofoil. I’ve liked them very much. They clean beautifully and look nice (I think). They are a Kraft Made product and seem to be good quality. So, I can recommend them. They come in many styles. Mine is the Shaker style, simple and clean lined. Goes with anything.

Good luck with your kitchen project, you’ll love it when it’s done!

by Cathy — 4/20/09 at 11:43 am #

34. Cathy,

Thank you so much for your response. Those are the exact cabinets we are looking at. We too like the clean lines of the Shaker style. I haven’t been able to get much information on Thermofoil. You just helped me decide.

38. hi cathy, love the kitchen, my new kitchen will be black and white, i fancy having the delonghi kettle and toaster in red but my sugar, tea, coffee jars are black and chrome, we r hoping for a retro scheme, we are also having a breakfast bar and i’ve seen chrome stools with either red or black seats, don’t know which ones to go for and also not sure what colour to paint the walls. Units are white, floor and wall tiles and cooker black, i also live the idea of having black alumimium venetian blinds, i have 3 windows, any advice, tips would be appreciated.

by jenny — 8/6/09 at 11:23 am #

39. Hello Jenny,

Your kitchen sounds adorable! I love all the great ideas and elements in or going into your space. It sounds like you’re doing just fine. Since you’re going for the retro feel. I’d paint the wall a white color to keep the look crisp, clean and high contrast. Use the red as accents. Maybe use the red on the seats of the stools, since you have quite a bit of black. Also, instead of black aluminum blinds go with a chrome or stainless steel blind, just repeats that element a little more. Be mindful not to overdo the theme…a little goes a long way.
It will look so sharp! Let me know how it comes out.
Thanks so much for your nice comments and have fun it that kitchen.

40. I love this kitchen. I would love to know where the black and white ceramic pegged shelf above the telephone came from……….I would love to have one just like it

by Renee — 9/7/09 at 8:05 pm #

41. Thanks so much Renee,

I’m glad you like the little shelf and the kitchen. I purchased the shelf at HomeGoods many years ago and it was all white. So, I had to doctor it up a bit and add the black checkerboard and borders. It’s all just paint and it was very simple to do. It filled that blank wall up a bit and repeated the check pattern. So, go find a white shelf and get out your paint and have-at-it!
Have fun with your project, you can do it!

by Cathy — 9/8/09 at 10:45 pm #

42. I am so confused!!! I have white appliances(refrig, dishwasher, washer dryer) and a black stove and microwave. My biggest stumbling block seems to be flooring. The flooring will run from my entryway into my kitchen. I’d really like black and white but haven’t been able to find any – any suggestions?

by Cathy — 9/13/09 at 11:29 pm #

43. Hello Cathy (good name)

You are wanting a black and white flooring idea to compliment your black and white appliances?
Here’s a few ideas…

* You could lay tile in the classic black and white checkerboard pattern for entry into kitchen.
* You could lay (high quality vinyl or ceramic tile) in a black and white stripe pattern. Graphic and edgy.
* You could lay tile with a white center (field) and use the black as a border all around.
* You could lay the Black and white tile in a diamond pattern.

Many ways to get a unique and interesting floor.
As for where to find flooring, Look online, or Google “Black and white flooring, tile”. Or visit some higher end flooring dealers for more ideas and product lines.

Have fun with the floor, you can really make a statement here.

46. Hi Cathy,
I have the same kitchen as you, but until seeing your picture had never thought of tiling the splashback in black and white, (ours is just white)
Could you please let me know the size of the tiles of your splashback.
Thanks
Cilla

by Cilla — 10/23/09 at 5:09 pm #

47. Hey Cilla,

Great minds think alike LOL! Yes, I liked the contrast of the black and white tiles for the backsplash. I actually tiled it myself. Pretty easy. I used a dark charcoal grout as well. The tiles are just the standard 4″ x 4″ ceramic tiles. You can get them at Home Depot or Lowes…nothing fancy except how you use them together. Try a diamond pattern for another design. It was probably the least expensive part of the kitchen, but it gives a little punch.
Good luck with your project, you’ll love it.

by Cathy — 10/26/09 at 11:45 am #

48. Hi Cathy,
I can’t believe 2 years later you still get all these great comments!! Anyway, I LOVE your kitchen. We just did ours, white cabinets, black slate floor, but I didnt go with the black countertop – wish I would have – we did a black white and grey speckled counter to save money. But I think I can get away with copying your back splash – thank you for posting the info on that. My question is – does the wall you are doing have to be perfectly smooth b4 tiling?

by Cheryl — 10/28/09 at 1:09 pm #

49. Hello Cheryl,

Thank you so much. Yes, It’s been a while since I posted this, and I still get great comments. It’s always nice to hear from people like you and talk “kitchen talk”. All’s pretty much the same except we put in new windows and I have a nice white framed window to look at now. The wall decor is changed a bit but everything else is the same and functions well.
As for your question about having a smooth wall before tiling, yes, that’s important. Scrape off any bumps or high spots if you can. The flatter the better so your tile doesn’t lift or crack. If you’re not sure, have a professional look at it and get his advise.
Your kitchen sounds beautiful, enjoy it and have fun tiling.

Thanks for chatting, write back soon.

by Dotty — 12/26/09 at 12:50 am #

51. Cathy,

The black and white tile backsplash is exactly what I’d like to do in my kitchen. May I ask where you purchased the tiles?

TIA.

-Greg

by Greg A. — 12/27/09 at 9:43 pm #

52. Hi Greg,

Good to hear from you. The black and white tile was probably the least expensive part of the kitchen. The tile is a standard 4 by 4″ ceramic tile and I purchased it at Home Depot…nothing fancy, but the pattern the two contrasting colors make is what brings interest to the space. I also installed it myself and grouted it in a dark charcoal grout. It wasn’t hard, and saved $ to use elsewhere in the kitchen.
Good luck with your backsplash, you’ll love it!!!

by Cathy — 12/28/09 at 12:45 pm #

53. Hi Dotty,

The counter chairs were purchased from a little store in Orange County, Ca. over 4 years ago. They are not a chain, so I don’t know if they are available there anymore. But, I’ve seen them in a few places. They are called Napoleon chairs. Mine were white and I painted them black. Go online and google “Napoleon chairs” and see what pops up. They are pretty common so I don’t think you’ll have trouble finding them.
Thanks for asking and good luck in your search.
