stair landing fireplace pillows 006

This is such a small split-level stair landing in my house that I did’nt think there was much you could do with it.
I tore up the ugly carpeting and painted black and white checks on the landing, and the stair treads black. I had an old sofa table and had to lengthen 2 of the legs because of the step difference on the landing. I picked up the mirror at a swap meet and the sconces and floral at HomeGoods. Theres alot going on in the little space but I think it works for us.

2. Cathy,
Would have never thought of lengthing the legs to achieve that solution. The painted landing ties in the home motif. Mirroring the upstairs landing gave this space a larger look. Keep the pictures coming. Their reminding me to be open minded when challenging situations present themselves when decorating.

4. Thanks Betty, Janice and Deb,
Yes, you usually can find a solution to many decorating problems just by thinking them through and not being afraid to try things.

5. I like the space very much but am curious about the scones & the flowers or branches in them. Why did you select them and was this the look you were trying to achieve?

6. Hello Sonja,

Thank you very much. I used the tall straight Birch branches in the sconces because I wanted something tall and natural to fill the spaces by the mirror. It adds a little dimension to a small area and is a little different than candles or art.
Thanks for asking.

8. Hi Mimi,

No style in particular…maybe Cottage Casual , or Cheap Chic, or Use What You Have and Make It Work. LOL. Just a mix of stuff.
Thanks so much.

9. Cathy,
With your creative approach, you have encouraged me to try to “Think outside the box” I am walking around my house looking for opportunities to try something new and interesting using what I already have. Thanks!

10. You go for it Cheryl!!
You’d be surprised what you’ll find looking at things you have in a new way. You can really “freshin” up a space by remixing things you have from different rooms. Have a great time rediscovering all the great things you already own. Write back and tell us what you’ve done.

11. Hi! You have exactly my taste. Would you mind sharing with me the color of the paint on your walls. I absolutely love what you did with the staircase. Alice in SC

12. Hello Alice,

Great minds think alike! LOL. So glad our tastes are in-sinc.
The wall color on the wall is a custom color. It’s a golden beige color similiar to Benjamin Moore paint color, Windham Cream, HC-6. It’s a happy, fun color and I’ve enjoyed it for many years. The white I used on the walls and trim is a Swiss Coffee color. Many vendors have this color. It works well with the yellow because it’s a warm white color.

Thank you for your nice comment. Write again soon.

13. Hi Cathy,
I wish you lived in the Indpls., IN area - I love your style! I love what you did to your staircase! I’ve been working up the courage to rip the carpet off my staircase. I’m hoping it’s hardwood underneath, but I’m not holding my breath. I’ve thought about painting it for a cost savings, but have no idea what color to go with. I have dark wood trim throughout my house & a 40 yr old gold tile that’s in perfect shape in the entry (I love the tile & plan to keep it). Do you have any suggestions? Thanks - love your work, please continue to post your pics - they give me great ideas :)

14. Hello Beth from Indpls,

A little too cold for me, but I’m sure it’s a beautiful place. Thank you for all your nice comments.
Ahhh yes, that staircase. I just couldn’t stand that carpet any longer, so it had to go. If you have one of those creepy carpets, take it out…better check what’s under it before you demolish the place. I think with your dark wood trim and gold tile you might try…

Painting the treads the dark brown color of your trim ,and paint the risers white or dark brown.

Or, Paint or faux bois (paint stairs to look like wood with a rocker, graining tool) just the side edges down the stairs. Then paint a simple carpet runner (faux carpet runner) down the center of the steps. Pick up your gold color in your tile and other colors in the room. Use a stencil to repeat designs. Seal everthing well with 3-5 coats of polyurathane. Could look super!!

One of those techniques might work for you. Let me know what you do, you’ve got my interest peaked.

Great to chat, stop back soon!
