Since everyone is posting their bedrooms, I will too. My bedroom is small but comfortable. I made my headboard out of plywood, foam, batting and a fabric I liked. I used the colors in the headboard to make the pillows and sew the black trim on the matlasse coverlet. I made the valance with the same pillow fabric. Then painted a bunch of old beigh colored furniture, black and green and installed new hardware. Added some accessories. The tin cache pot and candle stands on top of the black armoire were from HomeGoods. Everything else was stuff I had and refurbished. Really done on a budget but its fine for us.

1. Cathy, I love your bedroom! Especially the “M” pillow…I love monogramed things…all the rooms in your home flow together so nicely!
I would love to come for a visit! hahahha
Have a nice weekend….

4. Hi, Cathy,
I would like suggestions/ideas about my dark galley kitchen. It’s blah, and would like it to be a fantastic area of the house. Thank you very much.

5. Hi Ana,
Since I can’t see your kitchen , a few ideas might help. A dark kitchen needs… recessed lighting, light or white color cabinets, Stainless steel appliances do reflect light and may brighten the space, warm wall color…yellows, golds reds, take curtains off a window and just have a high valance…. some ideas for you. Good luck.

6. Hi..I love your bedroom! I would like to know how you did your wall treatment. It looks like wood strips with painted wall….or is there wood panels?
Thanks!
Pat

7. Hello Pat,
Thank you Pat. The wall “paneled” treatment was pretty easy. I don’t have much texture on my walls, so all I did was use 1×4 MDF boards spaced about 16″ on center. The top ledge of the “paneling” is at 66″.
I used Liquid Nails and nail gun to attach them to the wall. Painted everything an eggshell Swiss Coffee white. On the top of the paneling are 1×2s to make a small ledge and add dimension. Baseboards are the 1×4s as well. It looks like a “paneled” room but much less work and cost. Its not hard, just takes a little time. I’ve done this in my living room as well at the 8 ft. level. Go to the Living room category, Fun and Happy Living Room to view.
Let me know if you need more info.

8. I love your beautiful bedroom, Cathy. Did you spray paint the chairs red?
For the last few days, you have helped me “get my act together” regarding the black, white and red color scheme I have throughout my house. I have another bedroom, that I may not want to decorate in these colors. I’m thinking I’d like to use something fun like lime green — for the sheets, that is. I know I want to use a white coverlet and some tropical throw pillows in black with lime green foliage. Only problem is, the bed sits in front of a wide window — the exact width of the bed. It must go this way in the room because there’s no other solution. How can I “frame” the bed with a window treatment, that will coordinate with my bedding? I also have a black wicker chair that needs a cushion. Could you please give me your thoughts on this room — and also what type lamps you’d use? As you can see, I like to use a white matelasse coverlet in my bedrooms because it’s easy to change the look of the room with accessories. Thanks.

9. Hello Janice,
I’m glad you’re enjoying the site. No, your ‘act” was already together, I just gave a few suggestions. I, too like using a light colored solid bed covering (duvet, matelasse, comforter, bedspread, coverlet ect.) It acts as the neutral piece of furniture (like a light, neutral sofa). You then can add in color, pattern, texture without it becoming dated.
I like your lime green/black tropical foliage idea. Since your bed sits in front of the bed sized window, play up that big focal point. Turn the whole window area into a big “headboard” look. Install floor to ceiling simple straignt lined drapery in your foliage pattern on the window behind the bed. Add a simple, low, open headboard, so you can see the drapery behind it and to not block the light. Use white sheers or blinds for light control during the day. Add some of the foliage fabric to pillows, also the green and black. You could add a flat straight cornice board (to the ceiling) with the same foliage fabric to complete the “boxed” in headboard feel. In other words, frame the window, all sides with the same fabric. Your black wicker chair cushion could go white with the green welt. The wall color could be a lighter shade of your lime green.
The red(ish) chairs in my room were painted with paint I had made to match with the bedding. I painted them with a brush because I couldn’t find a spray color I liked…easier to spray wicker if you can.
…a few more ideas for you. Good luck and let me kow how things turn out.

10. Those are great suggestions, and I appreciate each one. There’s only one problem, however, and it’s my fault for not mentioning it. I don’t have any more of the tropical foliage print. It was the last bit the fabric store had on the bolt. Actually, I had bought it to make pillows for my outside rockers, and then decided that I liked it for the inside. But, I’ve been thinking over the weekend that it may be best to keep the red and black color scheme that I have going in the rest of the house. As I mentioned before, my home is small (1,100 sq. feet). The reason I thought I might like to change the colors in this bedroom is because I plan on using red, white and black in the master bedroom (white coverlet, red accessories). Didn’t want two identical rooms. If I opt to use the lime and black pillows on the porch, is there a way I could continue the red and black color scheme in this second bedroom, without it looking similar to the master bedroom? How would I do that? Would I make black the accent color, instead of red, which I’m using in the rest of the house? How do I have two different looking bedrooms, using the same color scheme? I’d like to use a white coverlet in this room also — but I could change it. As you can tell, I don’t like busy bedding. I like “busy” in the accessories. LOL The bed in this extra bedroom is a four-poster type (belonged to my grandmother) but the posts are only 3/4 in height — not tall. As I said, bed fits perfectly under the wide window and is the exact width. I have bamboo blinds on this window for now, but they can be changed. I have no idea where to start, but, as I said, perhaps it would be better to continue the red, black and white colors throughout my home, since I do want continuity. After knowing this new information, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thanks, Cathy.

11. Hello Janice,
We’re going to get this whole house decorated for you on this site! LOL.
Yes, I do like the white bedding. Paint the window wall behind the bed BLACK, yes, Black, the rest of the walls white. Keep your bamboo blinds for light control. Add white floor to ceiling drapery to frame the window and adds a headboard feel behind the bed. Add some red, black floral or damask type pillows to the bed. A little pattern. Add a natural rattan or wicker chair to repeat the feel of the blinds. Add some large artwork on one of the white walls, thick black mats with some red subject matter. A few pieces of furniture, tree, Nickel lamps with white drum shades by the bed. It will look sharp!! What do you think?
by Cathy 3/6/08 at 1:02 am #
12. Cathy, I think you have nailed it! That is EXACTLY the look I want — the black, white and red working together, but yet looking entirely different from the other bedroom. And, you know, I’m not shocked about your suggestion concerning the black wall. Don’t know if you saw a recent episode of Designed to Sell, in which Lisa painted the wall behind the bed black, in a very small bedroom. At first, the homeowner was speechless by her suggestion, but she assured her the room would look fantastic — and it did. She used black and white damask bedding, and the other walls in the bedroom were white. It was one of the most beautiful rooms I’d ever seen and, before, I couldn’t imagine this working in such a small room. You suggested a wicker or natural rattan chair to repeat the feel of the blinds. I have a wicker chair in my bedroom, and it’s black. Should I change the color? And, also, what fabric color do you suggest for the cushion? I also have an antique vanity in this room, which belonged to my grandmother. Of course, I don’t want to paint it, since it is an antique, but is there some accessory I could use on the vanity to continue the theme, without doing anything to the finish of the vanity? Again, the ideas you’ve presented to me sound so wonderful, and I’m going to do each thing you suggested. And, yes, Cathy, you have helped me so much with my little house, and I can’t thank you enough. Aren’t you glad I don’t have more rooms to be decorated. LOL

13. I had another thought, Cathy. Could black and white toile be substituted for the black and white, or floral damask? Just wondering. Also, IF I ever decided to remove the bamboo blinds, would the rest of the decor you described stay the same? (white floor to ceiling drapery, etc.). Sorry for popping in again. These thoughts didn’t occur to me until I hit the “submit comment” button.

14. Hi there Janice,
I’m glad you like the “black wall”! LOL. No, I didn’t see that episode of Designed To Sell. It sounds like black walls are the way to go. I think it will look wonderful! I was thinking more of a natural rattan chair but since you have a black one, give it a try. Stay with a white cushion or your pillow patterned fabric. Sure you could use a B/W toile instead of the damask, anything with the B/W would look good. Add in a little red.
Your Grandmothers antiques will look great. Don’t paint them. Add maybe a vase of red flowers to the vanity for some color, or drape a red scarf over the top. Yes, keep the bamboo blinds, the drapes would stay the same. But I like the wood to soften the contrast of the black white and red.
Your house will be a Knock-Out! Send some pictures when you get it further along. You’re doing a fine job…glad I could help with some ideas.
Write back soon,
Cathy

17. Cathy, just wondering how you’ve decorated your guest room — or other bedrooms in your home. This one is so wonderful. The others must be equally as beautiful. Could you tell us about the other bedrooms?

18. Hi Janice,
Thanks so much. The room is “small but comfy”. We enjoy it.
My other rooms are still filled with adult kids…so that should tell you what those rooms look like. LOL. One of these days I’ll get my hands on those rooms, but for now…disaster areas!!!
Thanks for asking. Sorry not more exciting!

19. Cathy, I couldn’t find an appropriate topic to post this on, so I’ll try here. For the longest time, I’ve been searching for something to use in one of the bedrooms, that would solve a storage problem — perhaps an armoire or a dresser with many drawers. I haven’t been able to find an armoire large enough so I began looking for dressers. I spotted one at the auction that I thought would work. It has nine drawers, is real wood, and the lines are beautiful. There is only one problem, however. It’s an old piece, probably from the 80’s, and the finish is a distressed golden yellow, and was part of a matching set. The base sits flat on the floor (no legs) and has a beautiful mirror with an “inverted shell” motif at the top. There is some carving down each side and the drawer pulls are quite orante. No dents, scratches, etc. I want to paint it in a nice cream color, perhaps, so it will visually enlighten the room, and go nicely with the bed, which as a gold/silver marbelized iron headboard. I know it’s not a good idea to paint real wood, but this isn’t a valuable antique. Would cream be a good choice, since my walls are cream, and I want a lighter look for the room. So, would you paint the dresser and, if so, what color? And, how do I begin? Also, the dresser will be placed in the center of two windows. The mirror fits nicely in the space between the windows, and the ends of the piece will be under each window. In other words, there is a window on either side of the mirror. What style window treatments should I use — roman shades, panels, etc. I want something that doesn’t compete with the mirror. By the way, the words “Mount Airy Furniture Company” are stamped on the inside of one of the drawers. Are you familiar with this company? I only paid $15.00 for this, and it’s very heavy and was probably an expensive piece of furniture in it’s day. Thanks for your help.

20. Hi Janice,
I just wrote back to you and I sent it, and it went off somewhere into cyberspace. So, I’ll write again. (hope I remember what I said).
Feel free to post anywhere, We’re an informal group here.
Your new dresser sounds great. Such a bargain…you know how to shop. Are you putting this dresser in the room with the red/white and black, or another room?
I just saw a few days ago on HGTV, Color Splash with David Bromstad, A dining room he did. He bought a wonderful old sideboard that he painted turquoise. He was taking his colors from some china, and they had …turq. light coral and I think white. It looked so stunning in that room. I filed that in the mental, do-someday decorating file. He also painted a big dog picture to go over the mantle in the same room. The whole room was exciting.
I like your white idea for your dresser, but maybe think of an accent color to paint it as well. Could look great. Depending on what feel you want in the room. Just an idea for you. Try to see that episode of Color splash online. You could paint the mirror a silver or gold or a mix to pick up on the headboard.
No, I haven’t heard of that furniture company. Check it out online.
It sounds like you don’t have enough room for long drapery panels next to the dresser. I do like roman shades, fabric or natural materials…wood, bamboo, etc. Keep them simple because your dresser and mirror are more ornate.
Sounds like a fun project. Let me know how it turns out.

21. Hi Cathy,
Sorry to be so late in getting back to you. I’ve been on vacation. I love your ideas, but do you know what I decided while I was away? I think I’ll keep the dresser as is — for now, anyway. The finish is beginning to grow on me. I found out more about it. It’s called “The New French,” and borders on “Art Deco” — not my description but the words of a person who is familiar with the piece. And, no, it isn’t in the room with the red, white and black color scheme. But, since most of my home is French in style, the dresser fits in well. And, it’s one of those golden colors that goes with many other colors — red, especially. I believe I saw the David Bromstad episode you mentioned. He has wonderful style — just like you. You could have probably been the Design Star, had you been in the running! Thanks again, Cathy.

22. Hi Janice,
Your’re welcome. I hope you had a great vacation! I’m going on a “staycation”…right here around home. Luckily, lots to do with beaches and fun towns in the area.
Your dresser sounds great the way it is. Sometimes you just have to live with things a little and they grow on you just fine. I bet it looks great with the red.
As for me on Design Star…No way…too much pressure!
They like young, energetic, and lots of drama people. I’m too old and boring! LOL.
Fun to watch though! I liked the blonde girl that won.
Have a great rest-of-the-summer!
Talk soon.

23. Good Morning- We are in process of completly re-doing our 11′W x 20′L
kitchen. It is U shaped & has a room right off it that has a 5′ doorway. This makes me think the 2 rooms should be decorated to compliment each other. I want to do Tuscan colors. The ceilings are going to be wood with a whitewash. Counter tops are granite black with dk. green & gold tones, stainless appliances. Floors are golden honey tones hardwood. Not certain what colors the cabinets should be? Each room has 4′ & 5′ of windows in the front. Theres a window over the kitchen sink. I’m really looking for suggestions for colors, prints, designs. Lost! Please help with any suggestions. Will be using the room off the kitchen as a diningroom which had same color hardwood floors.
Thank you very much with suggestions,
Terry

24. Hello Terry,
Your Tuscan (to be) kitchen sounds wonderful. Thanks for all the details.
You probably need to decide your cabinets first. Look at mixing some woods for the cabinets. Maybe darker maple cabinets mixed with an antiqued cream color. Also mix 2 traditional styles for cabinetry with the two finishes. This gives a collected or mixed look, like an Italian farmhouse.
To pick a paint color, first find an area rug for the dining room that has those beautiful Tuscan colors in it, like, golds, rusts, greens. Pull a color from the rug to paint the dining area and use another color from the rug to paint the kitchen. Then add some of the dining room color into the kitchen in smaller doses and do the same with the kitchen color into the dining room. This will tie the two rooms together nicely but give color interest to the walls.
Use some simple patterns with your colors, that blend with your area rug, for drapery and chair cushion upholstery. Add in a few Tuscan touches, don’t overdo, (you don’t want a themed restaurant look). Good design doesn’t have to shout to be heard.
I think you have a great start so far. I hope I could help you in some way.
Good luck and have fun decorating.
