This is my small but colorful dining room. Just because a rooms small, doesn’t mean big elements can’t work well. Bright colors and patterns, large overscaled artwork from a model home discounter, mismatched chairs from a furniture tent sale, old furniture pieces I had, and accessories mostly from HomeGoods,(dishes on wall, bowl of fruit on table). I’ve learned theres alot you can do with things you already have or can find inexpensively.

What color is that on the walls?

by Julie — 4/3/07 at 3:08 pm #

2. Hi Julie,
The color is a custom color. I’ll see if I can find a color close to it in my samples. Thanks for asking.

3. Hi Julie,
you asked about the paint color on the walls. The closest color was from Behr Paint, #140D-6, “Shangrri La”. I’ve also seen it called “Salsa.”

7. Cathy, this is one of the most beautiful rooms I’ve ever seen — seriously! Can’t understand why it doesn’t look busy, with all the colors and patterns going on — but it doesn’t. Do you mind sharing your source for the beautiful rug? It’s gorgeous.

by Janice — 3/6/08 at 2:11 pm #

8. Janice, you’re too kind! Yes, there’s alot going on but it seems to work. It’s a cheerful room in a cottage style house.
The rug was purchased through Home Decorators collection…online. Or you can get a catalog sent to you. It’s been a few years so I don’t know if they have it or not anymore. The manufacturer is Trans-Ocean, Siena, Pattern # 9878748, Color: Morning Glory Black, 100% wool.
Thanks again for joining in.

9. Thanks for the info, Cathy. I think I remember seeing your rug in the Home Decorators catalog. It looked familiar, but I couldn’t remember where I had seen it. The floors in my dining area are wood laminate, and I wish I could find a colorful rug for under my round table. But my living, dining area and kitchen are together. And with the red kitchen walls, the black and white backsplash, and the zebra rug in the living room, I’m stumped about what type rug I need. And while I’m on the subject of dining rooms and kitchens, what made you decide to paint your kitchen cabinets white, opposed to black. Just wondering because you do seem to get a lot of light through the patio doors, and could have chosen to paint them black. As you know, I’m having to make this same decision — black or white — oh, what should it be! LOL

by Janice — 3/11/08 at 12:58 pm #

10. Hi Janice,
I went with the white cabinets because I wanted the dark Impala granite counters and dark sink. So I wanted the contrast of the two together. It would be too dark in here with black cabinets as well. I don’t get alot of bright light so this was the best solution.
Look online for area rugs in the colors you like, one will jump out at you that will work. There are tons of area rug sites. Maybe more of a sisal type. You could stencil big checks around the border. Just a thought.
Good luck,

11. I have white counter tops, Cathy, so perhaps black would be the best choice for my cabinets. As for rugs, I’ve seen some pretty area rugs with black and white checked borders, but they have roosters, fruit, etc., mixed in. Since I have the Pates Baroni poster (the mime carrying a platter of spaghetti), didn’t think I should add animals or fruit. Wish I could find something with a “French feel” that has the colors I need, and would relate to the living area. So, the search is still on.

by Janice — 3/12/08 at 10:08 am #

12. Hi there Janice,

I think the black cabinets would be wonderful. Especially with the white counters. You do get good light in there don’t you? Very updated and chic. No, you don’t want animals or fruit on the area rug. Look online at Ballard Designs. Look at the Seagrove indoor/outdoor area rug. It’s a patterned “sisal” poly-propylene, cleanable for under the dining area. Hose it off with soap and water to clean. There’s a red or black that might work for you. Oh here’s another, Avondale, or Chaumont jute rug, very French. Or the Monterey. A bunch here might work for you. Take a look.
Talk Soon.

13. Thank you for letting me know about the source for rugs. I have the latest Ballard Designs catalog at home (I’m at work), and haven’t had time to look at it. Can’t wait to check out the styles you mentioned. I knew that I had the zebra print rug in the living area, which opens off the kitchen/dining area via a wide archway. I could never find a rug for under the table, that would relate to the zebra one in the living room. It was really depressing me that I couldn’t. I do appreciate your pointing me in the right direction. And, yes, I do receive lots of light in my kitchen/dining area. My table sits in front of patio doors and the sun shines in almost all day. I mentioned to you before that the only wall that is red in my living area is the focal wall, with the ebony fireplace and mantle. The other 3 walls are a creamy ivory. Do you think they should be darker — or lighter (white?). I don’t know what it is about mixing whites, tans and ivories that confuses me. For instance, you suggested that I use a white shower curtain with black banding in the small bath. But, the walls would be tan and cream stripes. Before you suggested this, I thought white would be too stark. But, will white always work with tans and creams? Sorry, I’m rambling again!

by Janice — 3/13/08 at 10:22 am #

14. Hi Janice,

Your creamy ivory walls should be fine with your red accent wall. You don’t want a super stark white, so a creamy color sounds good. I’ve used a Swiss Coffee color from Dunn Edwards paint for my walls that are white and my trim. It’s a nice warm white. Your white shower curtain will be fine with the beigh stripe walls.
You can use another patterned rug near the zebra rug in the dining area, maybe stay in the black and white colors but a different pattern, like that Seagrove, Monterey or one similiar. Even a sisil style with a black binding/border would look good.
So long for now.

by Cathy — 3/13/08 at 4:42 pm #

15. Thanks, Cathy. I especially liked the Seagrove rug. And, thanks for assuring me that the white shower curtain will be fine. As I said, I such a problem with whites and ivories. By the way, did you notice the black and white shower curtain at Ballard Designs? It’s white cotton and has 3 narrow stripes around the border. The center is monogrammed in black. Would something like this work — or should I just keep it plain and simple?

by Janice — 3/14/08 at 10:21 am #

16. Hi Janice,

I think that shower curtain would look nice. ALso look at the Ballard shower curtain with the little black Fleur-de-lis on the white background.
The black accents would dress up the curtain a little…but not too much pattern. Either one would work well.

by Cathy — 3/17/08 at 11:57 am #

17. I’m glad you think one of those shower curtains in the Ballard Design catalog would work. For a while there, I thought I’d have to make those curtains! LOL I did see the Fleur-de-lis one, Cathy, and wondered if it would work. I’m painting the old wood-tone vanity ebony this coming weekend, and will use the nickel hardware. I suppose the trash can or anything I have on the vanity (soap dish, etc.) should be the nickle finish — or not necessarily??? While we’re discussing French things, I attended an auction this weekend, and won the bid on a black wire French dish drainer (just like the one at Ballards) and also a beautiful square black and white platter with a street scene. Although the platter was made in Italy, and seems to have Italian buildings, I think it would work in my red kitchen, especially sitting on my baker’s rack. Thanks for getting back to me. I know I’m a pest. LOL

by Janice — 3/17/08 at 1:18 pm #

18. No, your’re not a pest Janice, you just have lots of great questions…that’s what were hear for and my comments are just my opinions, you can use them or not.

I do like the Fleur-de-lis shower curtain. A little different than the stripes.
No, you don’t have to match the trash can, soap dish, tissue cover etc. to the nickel fixture finish. It would give you a clean look, but a mix is nice too. Whatever you’re drawn to, you have a good eye. You found some great stuff at the auction. By all means, mix and match styles.
You’re on a roll…keep going.

by Cathy — 3/18/08 at 1:13 pm #

19. Yes, I am inquisitive, that’s for sure. Decorating is an obsession, and I’m always wanting to know more about the concepts. I’m grateful that you’re willing to share your expertise, Cathy.

I believe I like the Fleur-de-lis shower curtain more than the other one, too. Since I have a French feel in the other parts of my house (especially the kitchen), I think it would be nice to continue the theme with the Fleur-de-lis. By the way, my towel bar and guest towel ring in the bathroom are brass. Since I will be replacing the vanity hardware with nickel, is there a spray paint that comes in a nickel finish, so that I could paint them? Or, would it be best just to replace them altogether?

And, do you remember how I questioned whether a white shower curtain would work with ivory (or cream) walls? Is there a WAY to know which is the best color choice — that is, when to use white or when to use ivory — in shower curtains or any type curtain. This confuses me so much. Or, does it boil down to the fact that white goes with anything — or that it gives a more elegant look? Boy, I’m confusing myself! LOL

by Janice — 3/18/08 at 1:30 pm #

20. Hello Janice,

Sorry I missed a few of your comments… You’re too fast for me to keep up LOL.
You could try to spray paint your old towel bars with a nickel finish metal paint. What do you have to loose? Clean, sand a little and maybe prime them…ask the paint guy what he would recommend. If that will work, by all means reuse them (be green). If not replace. Your whites and ivory should blend fine, especially with the curtain.
Bye for now.

21. I have a beige tuxedo sofa and two zebra print chairs that sit across from the sofa. I need a rug 5×7 size in this conversation arrangement. My accent colors are chartreuse and peach. Help

23. Hi Tee Jay,

Your room sounds exciting and chic. Love the colors and patterns. Since you have all of the accents in your furnishings. You might want to keep the rug very simple. Maybe a white Flokati rug or faux sheepskin. How about a thick white shag or even a sisal would be sharp but understated. Let those great zebra chairs and accent colors take center stage. Keep backgrounds low key.
Enjoy that great room.
