I wanted something a little different for my downstairs half bathroom. The space was very small to work with. I ran across this black distressed console cabinet in a home store. My husband cut a hole in the top for the sink, and reworked the drawer to make space for the plumbing. We added the tile backsplash and fixtures. We found the round mirror to repeat the shape of the “salad bowl” sink. It worked out well (you need to polyurathane the top to seal out the moisture, easy). Many people are using real furniture pieces as vanities. I’ve seen some great looking consoles, chests and lowboys in discount home stores. They would be perfect for this remake.

1. I love this!!!! was the plumbing part a big challenge???? My husband is pretty “handy” but I don’t like to give him really hard jobs….. On a scale from 1-10, (”1″being easy and “10″ being extremely difficult) what would be your rating?
thanks

2. It wasn’t too bad. You might want to read up on plumping before you start. I asked my husband what he would rate it , and he said probably a 5. Just think through what needs to be done first. You can always call in a plumber if you mess up.
Good Luck

3. another question….I love the walls in this room! Is it wallpaper or did you paint he stripes?????

4. The wall treatment is just 4 inch painted stripes. I painted the wall all white first then taped off the stripes ( measure real good) and painted a light gold stripe. A little time consuming, works best in a small space. Very inexpensive to do. The ceiling is low so I wanted a vertical element to make the space feel higher. Go for it Alli !!

5. It looks wonderful!!! Did you use the same type paint? both flat, or one flat and one eggshell? The yellow looks like it might have a subtle sheen…I don’t know if I am brave enough to try this one. I see designers do it on HGTV, but then again, they make everything look simple. How about you come and assist with the project??????hahahh

6. Cathy,
You are so-o-o talented! I know that your husband appreciates the fact that not only do you decorate beautifully, but you save him a lot of money, because of your creative ability.

8. If you lived a little closer I’d come help you. I would use a low sheen gloss level. The closest to flat, but not flat. It is a bathroom and you need a litlle cleanability. I would keep them the same sheen level. Start behind the door in a corner, in case you don’t come out even it won’t be as noticable. You can do this! Just take your time and measure good.

9. Cathy,
the more I look at all of your ideas the more I can tell I love your style of decorating..the black and white check theme throughout your home is fantastic…if I hadn’t already started my place in Florida I would consider going the route of the back and white decor…all of the colors you use with it just make the checks pop!!! I love it..perhaps I could incorporate this into my older home here up North..it has been a long time since we have decorated here and we are over due….Keep poting those great photos…I have enjoyed viewing them!!! 11. I recently purchased a beautiful bathroom cabinet, sink and top all in one piece from Homegoods. I am wondering if the top (which is black) is really granite or what type of material it is actually made of and what I will need to do to maintain it. The people at the store were not sure if the top was granite or not, but it sure looks like it. This cabinet will be in our guest bathroom on our first floor of the house so it does not get as much use as the upstairs bathroom.
