This is a BEFORE and AFTER of a small living room I designed for a client. She wanted a California coastal feel. Relaxed, casual with clean lines. The colors used were aqua, tan, brown and coral as an accent. The sofa and area rug (nylon sisal with leather edge) were custom made to fit the space. The aqua silk drapes are bordered in brown. Most of the other furnishings were purchased through national home stores. The sofa pillows were custom, except for the 2 brown and blue stripe pillows. They were from HomeGoods. The colors and pattern were right for the space. I’ve found, when furnishing a room, try mixing furnishings from many sources, stores, and with things you already have. Then you won’t get the ” everything from the same store or catalog look.” A personal, unique mix is always more interesting.

4. This is a beautiful room – you’ve created a great ‘feel’ here. I LOVE the half-round console – did you get this at Home Goods too? We’re moving into a new house next week, and it’s exactly what I’m looking for (though I could go a bit bigger and be okay too). I’m in north San Diego – any thoughts on where there might be another?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

5. This room is beautiful and has a great ‘feel’ – is the half-round console also from Home Goods? I live in north San Diego and would love to find one like that (and bigger would be okay too).

Thank you in advance

6. Hello Suzanne, Thank you for commenting on the room. It was a fun room to decorate. It has a very peaceful coastal feel. I just finished the family room in the same house. I’ll post pictures soon.

Hi Diane,
The Demi-lune console was a piece the owner had and we wanted it in the room. Its a beautiful and heavy marble topped piece. I’m not sure where she got it. I’ll ask her for you.

7. What did you do with the piano?

by archangelo — 8/6/08 at 10:20 pm #

8. Hi Archangelo,
The upright piano went directly across from the window, in the picture, to the open hallway on the wall. That way the people in the room can sit and listen and see the pianist, but it’s out of the small living area.
Thanks for noticing the details.

11. I am going for a beachy vibe in my living room. I am looking for a nice sandy tan paint color and have not found the right one yet. I like the color on the wall in this room. What is it?

12. Hello Lori,

I love the “beachy vibe” you speak of, but a nice subtle “feel”, more than a theme. I think this room reflects the feel I was going after. The sandy wall color is a warm beige and a beautiful backdrop to the furnishings.
The paint color is a Dunn Edwards Paint color called Bisque Tan # DE6157. If you can’t get Dunn Edwards Paint in your state, a close match to it would be Benjamin Moore Paint, Powell Buff. I hope that helped you out a bit.
Good luck with that beachy living room. It will be like a vacation there year round.

13. Love how cozy you made this space. Homegoods is my all time favorite place to shop. A little piece of heaven at every aisle…with prices to boast about…especially when the quality of goods; are brand names! Upon entering The exquisite gleam and shine of mikasa, tiffany and Waterford crystal and China, beckon you to admire! However, it’s the prices ($7.99-24.99) that take your breath away, with a whispered “ahh”-”nooo”! Almost too hard to believe!
Yet, as you go deeper through the myriad of contemporary to novelty items throughout the store the prices and quality stay on the same continuum…highest quality…best prices.
I dare say, I’ve never found any store that compares or even come close. Yes…there are wannabe imitators…but they just pale in comparison.

“There’s no place like home!”…”homegoods” that is!!

Thank you.
