Rachels visit Heidis rooms 008Rachels visit Heidis rooms 009

My client asked me to design a room around her piano (she plays beautifully). She wanted clean lines and surfaces, serene colors, simplicity with sophistication. She wanted Transitional Style.
Not too contemporary or too traditional. If you like this style, many home stores, like HomeGoods, have furnishings and accessories to design your own Transitional rooms AND stay on a budget.
Some things to look for in this style are…

* Solid colors or muted patterned fabrics
* Furnishings with straight or gentle curving lines
* A few larger accessories…mirror, artwork, lamps, floral etc.
* Clean uncluttered surfaces
* Contrast colors, light against dark
* Warm wall color
* Textured surfaces
* Simple window treatments
* “Less is More” applies here

Do you like this style? Its one of my favorites!

2. I didn’t realize that this is considered “transitional” - it’s exactly what I like…not to contemporary and not too traditional….looks really nice…

7. I love the layout of the room, it gives you an idea of what to do with minimal space . This room is very inviting. Love the mirror as another visual element.

8. I agree with most of the bloggers…the mirror looks great and adds depth to the room. I love looking at all the rooms because I love decorating but find it hard to come up with my own great ideas, and those of you who send pix have given me many great decorating ideas!

Thanks a bunch!

11. I think the room looks incredible. This is also one of my favorite styles.
Great job and I love the sitting chair with the scrolled arms.

12. Hi Dawn,
The chairs were custom made for the room. I’ve seen some that are similar that ready made. Look in national Home furnishing stores.

13. The room is very lovely. Lots of color!!! I love the table lamp with glass bubble stem. Where can I find two just like it? By the way I love shopping at Home Goods. I can decorate on budget!!!

14. I recently purchased a transitional pale mint green and multi color striped chair from the homegoods store in my area. I paid for the sofa, then went home and got my husband to pick it up. When we returned to pick up the sofa, they had put the chair out. I had been checking around different stores to price transitional sofa’s, we actually got both pieces for half of the price I would have paid elsewhere just for the sofa.

15. D. Cosby,
Sounds like you found some great furniture at HomeGoods, and the prices are whats hard to beat anywhere. I’d love to see them if you can upload a picture under “customer finds”. It reallty is amazing at what you can find in these stores. Keep checking back the inventory is always changing.

Diane,
I’ve seen the glass ball table lamps many places. I’ve seen them at HomeGoods cheaper than any place. Go on line under “Lamps” and see what you find. Good luck.

16. Cathy,
I think the room was very well put together! I am really enjoying hunting through the website for all of the different ideas. I also like the mirror, for my own home I would have looked for a black finish on the frame, but that is the beauty of visiting different people’s homes. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes. My front room is all done in a coastal theme/look. Some people may not like that, but I LOVE IT! Keep up the good decorating. I look forward to more photos of your work.

To Lynn, The mirror photographs a bit stronger than it is. A lot of the accessories are in the silver tones in the room. Sometimes its more interesting to add the unexpected to a room for a not too perfect feel.
Your living room sounds nice in a coastal design. Thanks for all your great comments.

18. I love that black end table…I want to buy one just like it, but I can’t seem to find one. Any ideas? Thank you, and great looking room!

Hello Rosemary,
Yes, the black side table worked well in the space. I got it at Z Gallerie, but I looked back on the site and it wasn’t shown, so….. If I find it elsewhere I’ll let you know. Thanks for asking.

20. I love it! It looks so neat and clean, and has a warm modern feel.

by michelle — 8/30/07 at 11:53 am #

21. Thank you Michelle,

Another detail thats hard to see is the area rug .It was made to fit the room. Theres about a foot of dark hardwood floor around the perimeter. The rug has a 8″ border in the green color with a beigh field.
Thanks so much for your comment.

22. I love your small table and the different lamps shown on them. I am going to go to the store to see them. I have a question - is the chair a chair or a chaise? It looks longer than a chair in picture but it is hard to tell. I BElieve the picture was taken on an angle. I am looking for either a chaise or a chair and i/2. Are there any in the store? Thank you - Beverly

by Beverly [...] — 2/6/08 at 12:04 pm #

23. Hi Beverly,

Your question is posted in this post, but I think you were asking about the chair in the post titled…Keep your furniture…Change you style. Is that right?
The chair in the pictures is a chaise. I was looking for a neutral, classic piece of furniture to write about, and the chaise fit the bill. The ideas would would work just as well with a sofa or chair. I hope you find the piece your looking for in a HomeGoods near you. Not everything is the same in every store, but I’m sure you’ll find something great.

24. Hi Cathy,
I love your transitional style, everything in the room just seem to go together. I especially like the double curtain feeling. Did you use double curtain rods and where did you purchase it? I see you used a ring for the green curtain, but I can’t tell how you put on the white layer.
THANK YOU!

by Nancy — 11/13/08 at 9:55 pm #

25. Hello Nancy,

Thank you so much. This room was a lot of fun to decorate. The draperies were all custom made for the windows. There’s a matching set in the dining room. The leaf green draperies are a dupioni silk and the semi-sheer underdrapes are quality polyester, because silk deteriorates if exposed to sun. The sheers are pleated and hung on a traverse rod behind the decorative rod. The two rods were installed seperately, but you can purchase double rods to get this same look. I often go to Penneys to get great looking rods and drapery hardware.

Thanks for asking and drop back soon.
