4. Hi All, I love the cottage style too. My husband prefers traditional. We live in the desert, so nautical items like the sailboat bookends do not work as well in our southwestern cottage/traditional home. I find it difficult to implement my cottage style with traditional pieces, especially since we do not use nautical or seashell items. Instead, I am always on the lookout for accessories influenced by cool tones of nature; birds, rocks, landscapes with water, etc… Anything to remind me of life by the ocean, without actually being boats or seashells. Any ideas of how to blend cottage style with traditional/southwest would be greatly appreciated.

5. Hi Tamsen,
Thanks for your comments, and I completely understand your dilema…..In my opinion, cottage and traditional styles go hand-in-hand. A cottage can easily be found on the praries of the southwest as well as by the sea….Your choice of using things from nature is perfect…..I love a bird’s nest, twigs, special stones, a feather or anything with special meaning tucked under a beautiful glass dome.
Look for your muted colors in china patterns, fabric or shabby chic furnishings.
My philosophy is “anything goes” Decorating is your own comfort level.
Each person is unique and finds enjoyment in different things. Thankfully we are all different, that is what makes the world so interesting!
Enjoy your “traditional cottage ” home.

6. I also discovered these bookends, and have used them in our newly decorated beach cottage style family room. I put them on top of our new TV corner armoire, which I painted cottage white. I sandwiched between them books all with ‘water’ titles to go along with the nautical theme. They look great with the greenery, beach lantern and sea shell that I arranged them with.

9. I love the bookends . I wish I had them. The one on the right is barely seen because of the tall books. I think if you would move the books over toward the middle your boat will be more visible.

I will give it a try…..I appreciate the advice. Maybe you can find the bookends at your HomeGoods!

11. Hi Chrissy,
Thanks for your comments! I love all the “beachy” signs as well…..I will have to post the one I just found, “Life is Good at the Beach” I just love it! The sign is off white with sea-glass blue lettering! Be sure and look for it at your HomeGoods!
Thanks again,

12. I live about 30 minutes away from Tybee Beach in Savannah, Ga. I recently started to redecorate my entire home. It is definitely a cottage. (Under 1,000 sq. ft, 2 bedrooms, 1 bath). The beach has inspired me. I am redecorating with the spirit of the coast in mind. One bedroom is dedicated to the coastal theme. I have 3 small apothacary jars with seashells, Tybee sand, and seaglass in them. They are on a shelf I purchased at HomeGoods above the bed. Starfish are resting above the bedroom door and closet door. White and wicker furnishing are used. I am contemplating hand-sewing sea-themed appliques to the curtains. Anyways, I will try to post some pictures soon.

16. I have posted two pictures of the guest bedroom to the customer finds blog area. They are rather far away, so I will have my husband take some more close ups.

17. Diane,
Thanks for sharing your photos!!! I love the starfish over the door! You may not believe this, but I have the exact same comforter in my guest room at the beach!!!! I thought the stripes were very “nautical”….
I would love to see a close-up of the shelf, when you get a chance!
Thanks again for sharing!

18. Speaking about unique sayings and signs about the beach. I’ve seen one out here in Ca……”If your’re lucky enough to live by the beach, you’re lucky enough.” So true!!
