I saw these decorative dogs in my favorite store and just had to get them.  Rather then getting one of them, I chose to get two.  I knew that I wanted something different in front/sides of the fireplace, but I had not seen anything of interest until I saw these two lovely dogs in HomeGoods.  You might ask, “why these dogs in front/sides of the fireplace?”  I pondered for some time what I would do to give a different and new direction.  When I saw these dogs, they were my answer.

Now, in front or on the sides of fireplace, you may decide on: large and ornate vases, flowers, lovely greenery that can vary according to your interest, beautiful sculpture, etc.  According to the decor of your home, the size and your interest, you may decide to do something different other then what has been traditionally seen. Share with us what you have done, even send pictures.  We love to learn about your tips as well.

(The pewter stallion horses- that have a brown tone with the naked eye- on the dark wood is not central in the livingroom, that’s why it is not discussed.  The concentration is on the gold tone.  You will see that the emphasis is on the goldtone, once the rest of the livingroom is shared. )

LOVE IT Do you LOVE IT?

1. Betty, I like the dogs. However, I would consider them someplace else in your home, especially since you have the “oversize Horses” above your fireplace. Why not stay with the horse theme, or switch out the horses for “dogs”. The other thing I noticed was that the horses look as if they are silver, therefore you might consider dressing the fireplace with silver instead of gold. I would pull the silver down on the floor and opt for decorative horses that are perhaps lying down and use a very simple silver screen. That way the above-fireplace would not have to compete with the floor for dominance. Let the floor space compliment the above-fireplace focal point.
Betty, I’m not a professional, I’m just a 50+ girl from Kentucky. We love horses around here

2. You have a wonderful fireplace to decorate. If you make changes be sure to show them

3. Love it. Where in the world did you get those horses? Just love them. The only thing I would change is the fireplace screen. I would get one in silver to compliment the horses.

4. Hi Sharon and Linda,

Thank you so very much for your comments! The horses are in a pewter kind of material. I have had these horses mounted on wood for many years. The concentration in this living room is with the gold accent. As a result, I have continued to maintain the gold screens. The horses are high enough off of the floor for the liberation of the decor of the horses. and the gold tone accentuation.

Thank you immensely for your points of view. Remember, you don’t have to be a decorator to give suggestions or make comments. We all appreciate any and all contributions.

5. Hi Betty,

I understand what you are trying to do but….it looks way too busy. Simplify

“The concentration in this living room is with the gold accent.”
I would cut back on the gold and bring in some warm colors.

6. The horses are striking. The wood mounting looks complimentary to the wood stain on the dogs. I love animals and you picked my 2 favorites! The walls would look good in a mocha kind of color. I recently painted my dining room “hemp” and it is a warm color that might look good when you want to change the walls.

7. Hi Betty-it all depends on the look ‘YOU’ like—some like alot in a room some don’t—I think the colors look just fine! I mix metals too…
anything goes as long as ‘Your’ happy- I see that Your fireplace is Hansome…..keep going to Home Goods and have fun decorating! and enjoy the horses and dogs! At least you don’t have to clean up after them…… hahahahaha :-) Suzanne

8. I like the dogs and the fireplace. I would remove the gold screen and the horses. Everything seems to be on a large scale except the dogs. The fireplace itself is interesting and you have basically covered it up. Hang a nice picture over it . Addd a plant . Your dogs will then be the focal point.

9. Dear Betty: You certainly have nice taste. In some places to much of it. You seemed to have overstocked the focal point which is the fireplace. I notice that the fireplace is flanked by two shelving units that have a lot on them plus you have the horses over the fireplace which look really fine. The gold fan is really not necessary. Suggestion: Move the busy shelving units place the dogs in those areas. Ad a border by framing the fireplace ad a mantel. If posssible remove those dark black doors that makes your fireplace look like and old fashion cook stove instead of a fireplace that adds warmth. Place two compfy chairs facing each other which would look inviting and says come and get warm and relax in front of the fire. Whether this fireplace functions or not at least it will have the appearance that it does. Betty, thanks for sharing with us.

10. Hi Davis,

Thank you so much for your comments. You have some interesting suggestions. What you could not see in the picture is that the space is 25 inches deep and 40 inches wide. The lighted shelving is 31 inches wide, 13 inches deep and 79 inches high. We were excited to get the shelving for that space. It does hold items purchased from HomeGoods and some from extensive travel. I can appreciate you comments.

I can also understand why the fireplace would look like a stove, because it is called a “stove type fireplace.” The style contributed to the intrigue and the safety considered at the time. We didn’t want the problems that many times can occur with open fireplaces and we felt that the stove type would combine the many interest that we have in the the fireplace, the home, the livingroom, etc.

I thank you for sharing all that you have. It is meaningful that that you took the time to respond. Share with us some of your finds from HomeGoods. That would be most exciting!

11. Hi Gloria,

Thank you for your response! I suppose I should have said in the beginning that the gold screens had been replaced even before I took the picture. When I share the entire room, you will see. Again, thank you.
Share some of your HomeGoods finds with us. We would love to see what you have found at our favorite store.

12. Hi Suzanne,

Thank you for your response! I don’t have pets and these dogs and the horses, though decorative, allow me to be a pet owner (smile). Thanks loads!!!

14. Hi Dre,

Thanks for your comments! I suppose that I should have said that the screen has been replaced. I didn’t put the new screen there at the time, because the concentration has been on the two decorative dogs.

Thank you so much for taking the time!

15. Hi Betty,

I like the dogs. I haven’t seen any like that before. They look like they go well with the fireplace surround. I like the mixture of materials. It is not the same, predictable, boring look that is often seen in decorating. Congratulations on following your own style!
