It’s baaack! The lost chicken recipe. We’re not sure what happened, but thank you to those of you who asked about it.
The answer to the question about coring or peeling the apple . . . nope, just wash it and put the whole thing inside.

Crock Pot Chicken

1 fresh whole chicken

1 apple washed

1/2 cup white wine or apple juice

Wash and prep the chicken, place the whole apple in the body cavity, put the chicken in your crockpot breast side down, and pour the wine or juice over the top. Cook it on low for eight hours or on high for about five.

This chicken is so moist and will fall off the bone. So, you can serve it immediately or use it in any salad or other recipe that calls for cooked chicken. It also makes the yummiest broth.

So, for this girl who is not a huge fan of cooking, it is the recipe trifecta! 1. It is sooo easy! 2. Clean up is a breeze! 3. It’s delicious!

1. I never thought of doing this in the crockpot. We soak chicken in frozen apple juice concentrate…(marinade style) over night..then flip in the am then put the chicken on the grill for dinner. Cook slow and it’s so juicy! It’s amazing! I love the lime chicken at Smokey Bones and realized that we could prob. do the same with lime juice (just not overnight!).
This sounds like the perfect way to get what I love the most and have no clean up!
THANKS!

5. For even easier cleanup– use Reynolds brand crock pot liners. They are amazing ( I learned this from Boy Scouts- who use them on campouts) No cleanup whatsoever.

8. Thanks to you all for your comments. I have to try the crock pot liners. I am all over making my time spent in the kitchen as easy as possible!

9. This also works great with 1/2 lemon in the cavity and substitute beer instead of wine or juice. Add a little garlic pepper and voila! SUPER moist…one of my family’s favorites.

11. I can’t wait to try all of these. You girls are great. I’ll keep checking back to see if more easy recipes get posted. My kind of cooking!

12. I have not tried this yet but does the skin get crispy? I would think it would be more like chicken that is in chicken soup. Do you take the skin off? Thanks Barb

by Barb — 7/12/07 at 7:41 pm #

13. Barb, You are exactly right. The skin in soft and pulls right off. I toss it along with the bones. Then the meat is ready to use in any recipe or it goes directly onto the dinner table.

14. Hi Deb,

I tried this wonderful recipe today and it was absolutely delicious!!! The meat fell off of the bone as you had said. I have shared the recipe with so many people.

Come back with some more simplistic ones. Great!

15. If you add carrotts and potatoes to any of the above chicken crock pot recipes, you have an instant meal. Toss a salad and your done! I use whole baby carrots and quarter medium sized potatoes…and no peeling is necessary.

by Lori — 7/14/07 at 1:55 pm #

16. Betty, I am so glad you enjoyed the chicken. We had it tonight. My husband made it. That is another reason why I love this simple recipe.

Lori, Thanks for the additional suggestion. What a great idea!!

by Deb — 7/18/07 at 8:41 pm #

17. Do you peel the apple first?

by jsh — 7/19/07 at 10:07 am #

18. Good question! I simply wash the apple and place it in the chicken whole. I throw it away when I remove the bones before serving. I hope you enjoy!

by Deb — 7/19/07 at 3:10 pm #

19. You can put little red potatoes (they hold up for the leftovers), baby carrots, celery, apples, and onions for a feast! For a different night, change your chicken up with a can or two of stewed tomatoes with mushrooms, basil, oregano, red wine and whatever seasonings you like (or just buy the McCormick Italian chicken crock pot seasoning packet) I like to add olives at the end. I use frozen chicken breasts and after 8 hours on low, it is delicisous!

20. Thanks Syndee, Your suggestions sound wonderful! My husband is on a very low sodium diet, so we have to be very careful of the things we add to our crock pot mix. Your recipes sound like they would be great for company, too.

21. Hi there-I just read your Crock Pot Chicken recipe and am wondering if you add any other spices, such as garlic powder, fresh gournd pepper, onion powder to this recipe, would it overwhelm the taste of the apple?

Thanks-Rosalie

by Rosalie — 9/5/07 at 10:41 am #

22. Hi Rosalie, I’m sure you could add any spices you would like. I do not with this particular recipe, because I like the sweetness of the apple. I often get creative with spices, so I would love to hear how you like it with garlic or some other seasoning. Thanks so much for your input. Deb

23. Hello ladies,
All of your recipes sound great! Now does anyone have a really yummy pork roast crock pot recipe that they would like to share..I would love to try them!

Thanks,
Ilene

24. Thanks Ilene, I do have a really good pork roast recipe that I make every New Years Day! An old German tradition of starting the New Year with pork. I’m not sure why, except that it is something my dear mother in law always did . . . :-) I will post in later today, so keep a look out!

by Deb — 9/18/07 at 1:20 pm #

25. Thanks for all the great recipes. Was wondering about the pork roast recipe by Deb.

by Elizabeth — 10/12/07 at 9:23 am #

26. Hi Elizabeth, You will find the pork roast recipe in the Let’s Cook post. I hope you like it. You know, I have never tried it without the sauerkraut, but I bet it would be tasty that way as well. Have fun cooking!!
