This candle holder sits on the floor in my great room. As you have probably guessed by now, I love candles. I think they add a warm and cozy feel to any room, and the aroma of a scented candle is wonderful as well. As summer is beginning to wind down . . . well kind of, it’s 107 degrees in StL today, I am still beginning to think about subtle changes I will make to my decorating. I noticed this candle, and because it is such an easy change I wanted to share it. In the Spring and Summer I keep the candle surrounded by flowers, but soon I will remove the flowers and fill the space with rosehips. Rosehips smell like cinnamon and look like cranberries and I use them all over the house during the Fall and Winter. What are some quick and easy changes that you make around the house as the seasons change?
1. Hi Deb,
That is a beautiful idea…thanks for sharing! I love candles too…whether its 7 or 107 degrees (stay cool!).
About every 3 months I also change out throw pillows, table center pieces, and my curtains over my kitchen sink (I just use 2 pretty dishtowels and hang them over a silver tension rod using clip rings).
My latest idea for decor flexibility is to hang a fabric print using brushed aluminum rods at top and bottom…that way I can use different fabric for different lookts and not spend much. Hint…sheets and shower curtains can be cleverly disguised as art!

2. Susan, I loved your ideas. I agree completely with using sheets and shower curtains, too. It is a wonderful and inexpensive way to get some beautiful pieces of fabric. I also really like your idea for using dish towels as your curtains over the kitchen sink. What a great way to coordinate everything easily. Thanks for your suggestions.

3. Hi Deb.
A room comes alive by candlelight at night. Wonderful ambiance is created. Don’t save your candles for a special occasion. Light them and enjoy them with the most important people…your family.
I love the candle holder too.
Take Care,
Cathy

4. I just have a question. I know they have really small Home Goods areas in Marshalls, but I was looking for a regular Home Goods store. I live in Lewes, DE and according to what the site admin told me, the closest one is in New Jersey. I thought you could purchase things online.
I am not getting on the Cape May/Lewes Ferry and going to New Jersey.
I don’t think they checked the map before they gave me the “closest”
store. So, I have a question, “Can you order online?”. Or, does someone know of one in Maryland or close then taking the ferry.
Thanks for your help. Monica

6. Deb,
Your candle idea is great. I too, LOVE candles and use them every chance I get. I usually don’t worry about burning them, but I would definitely not burn this one with the greenery around it. I love the candlelight at night, and even though I don’t want summer to end, I love that it is getting darker just a little earlier these days. I get to enjoy my beautiful family room and candlelight. The colors in my room seem to glow at night! Love your ideas!

This is lovely and soft! It must be quite an accent to the room!

8. Hello, Deb!
I love anything on a pedestal and your new candleholder has lovely lines!
Deb, I am a frequent Homegoods customer who would like to suggest that Homegoods develop an online store. I think it might prove to be very successful.
I recently received an email from Homegoods that advertised the opening of a new Homegoods/Marshalls store at Yorktown Shopping Center here in Illinois. Included on the email was a photograph of a beautiful settee/sofa. With its deep apricot fabric and gracefully carved wood frame, it is the sofa of my dreams! If I were able to order that sofa right now online, I would! And I would also order the matching lamp and area rug to go with it. Homegoods would have received a huge order from me today. Instead, as the current system works, I’m not even certain that anyone at Homegoods could tell me which store might stock that sofa. I’d even be grateful if someone could tell me the name of the manufacturer.
I hope that you will pass along my suggestion, Deb. I think that there may be many other Homegoods shoppers who feel the same as I do.
Sincerely,
Kathi

9. this comment is for Monica
homegoods are in all the tjmaxx and more stores so that is a good way to find one. look on the tjmaxx locator web site.
i like to cahnge my decor out with the seasons too. i keep my deccorations for each season in rubbermaid boxes[1 per season] . i keep the holiday inspired items in the same box [ex. haloween with fall, easter with spring, valentines with winter] that way its all in 1 place. i try to get decorations that are seasonally innspired rather than holiday.then i change out my pillows, throws and quilts to match.
if only i cold get my xmas stuff down to 1 box too!

11. Shelley, I loved your suggestions. We do the same thing with the labeled boxes. I use clear ones, so that I can see what is in them quickly and easily. It is so nice to simply grab a box and I am ready to redocorate for the next season. One other thing I like to do, is take pictures of where I have placed things. I have also heard of people placing prints in the boxes with their decorations. That way they only have to make decisions with things that they want to try in a new spot. If we liked it last year, it is pretty easy just to place it there again this year. This is especially helpful when changing from Fall to the Winter Holidays. Have fun decorating!

12. As Fall appraoches, I also make changes around the house. In my 2 black urns by the front door, I switch summer flowers to big russet mums. I also change the pillows on my sofa and the bedding on our beds. In the kitchen, I bring out pretty area rugs for the hardwood floors and change the placemats and towels to darker, richer colors.

13. Jackie, I love the rich colors of Fall, the cooler temperatures, and the comfort foods. Have fun changing things out for the seasons. I plan on getting started on my changes this weekend.

14. I live in Pensacola, Florida and we just added a small Florida room and a covered patio.I made one part of the room a cozy family room and the other part a small dinning room. The colors are cream, teal and rich browns.I wanted colors from our beautiful beaches.Didn’t want to go over board with a beach theme..Our walls are white, and so is the ceiling. The flooring in the room is a light wood.Furniture in the room is brown couch with matching recliner.I picked a armless side chair in a teal , cream and brown stripe.Dinning table, four chairs, end tables, and coffee table are dark!!! How can I make the room be light and airy???
by Sherry 4/5/08 at 1:11 pm #
15. Hi Sherry,
I understand the desire to keep things feeling light and airy when you live n a warm climate. I had to laugh recently when i wen to visit my dad in FL and was watching for his car at the airport. I had to laugh because, he drives a white car and so does everyone else. LOL
What I think I would do is keep all of your accessories in the room lighter shades of teal and cream. You don’t have to match your colors exactly as long as they are in the same color family. I would add a light weight throw and pillows to your couch. A table runner in the light colors on the table with a floral centerpiece which includes whites, creams, and lighter shades of blue. I think that by the time you add your accent items along with the fact that your walls and flooring are light you will notice a dramatic change in the way the room feels.
Please let us know how it progresses. We would love to see a pic or two as well.
