The home is definitely where the heart is!  The overall decor, the comfort level of the environment and the colors will often dictate what one feels when they enter a home.  At this time, we will merely share with you the dining room, living room and the library, of an exciting home in the Silver Spring, Maryland area.

The Dining Room:

IMG 0430 1

In the dining room, the Maleya Red painted walls (Ralph Lauren) highlight the decor.  The matching lamps on the cabinet with the black shades,  are coordinated with the matching shades on the chandelier.   The gold toned mirror contributes to the classic look and compliments the gold toned chandelier that rests over the antique table and chairs, that were purchased from a quaint antique shop.  The table is a product of 1920’s and the chairs (six) were made by hand in the 1800’s (19th century).  The marriage of the old and the new compliment each other and contribute to enhancing the decor and beauty of the home.  The selected pictures on each side of the mirror highlight the colors of the table runner, the jute rug, the autumn arrangement on the chest, and the large green plant in the corner.  All contribute to enhancing the decor.

IMG 0431 1 2

There is additional art work and paintings in this room that strongly display the heritage, the interest in the arts, family, and the love of music.

The Living Room:

IMG 0428 1

The living room displays warmth.  The wine colored sofa and two chairs with wine and dark brown throw pillows, one tan pillow, and a wine and dark brown throw were selectively chosen to maintain warmth and to highlight the art work in the room, while providing comfort for family and visitors.  Floor lamps on each side of the sofa provides comfortable lighting and balance to the room.  The painting hanging over the couch, with it’s vibrant colors,  depicts the love for art and music that is consistent in this home.  (There is additional art work that could not be displayed, because of my limited photography skills.) The dark brown leather ottoman serves perfectly as a table and a additional seat when the need arrives.

The Library:

IMG 0426 1 2

Double glass doors open to the library from the livingroom.  The two leopard covered bergere chairs on each side of the 20th century mahogany lamp table, skirted with a mustard colored table runner and a black table cloth, compliment the chairs and the jute rug. The leopard chairs are extended toward the door and graciously receives those who enter the library.  The crystal table lamp, the candle and the singular orchid plant on the table adds softness and warmth to the room.  The dark red and gold striped drapes provides a colorful and comfortable environment that ties into the transition from one room to another.

IMG 0425 1 2

Notice the book shelves.  The assortment of all kinds of reading materials/books that are integrated with memorabilia, family pictures, significant historical figures and items that highlight the love and pride of the family for what is most significant to them.  Again, the vibrant colors resonate!

1.  Jute rugs have become very significant now because they are durable, somewhat stain resistant, and can blend in with almost any furnishings without difficulty.

2.  Art and furnishings should depict the personality of the family that resides in the home.

3.  Mixture of antique and modern furnishings can be quite exciting and resourceful.

4.  When you live in the home, you must decide what is best for you and your family.

5.  Know your comfort level and learn what colors excite and inspire you.

6.  If you have questions about paint, check Cathy’s paint scale on this HomeGoods Blog.

7.  We truly appreciate this wonderful family for allowing us to venture into their home.

8.  Maybe you can get some ideas for decorating!

1. Betty,
What a beautiful home this is. I love how the red color transitions through the different rooms. A lot in one room, less in another. A nice balance. The mix of traditional and contemporary is very nice. Also the jute rugs keep the mood a little less formal. Love the leopard chairs with the stripe silk drapes, and the red color on the back of the bookshelves lends a rich background. What a great house to enjoy and entertain in during the holidays. Your photos are great. Thanks to you and the family for allowing a tour of their beautiful house.

2. I love, love, love these selections. The red and brown in the sofa area look so inviting and the dining area looks absolutely cozy. I have lived in my home for 18 years and have wanted a red dining area about half that time! You might have inspired me to give it a try!

Any regrets now that it’s in place?

3. Hi Cathy,

Thank you so very much for your comments! You are always so kind. There were other sections of the different rooms that I could not post, so as not to extended my pictures to approximately 10. As a result, I had to select the sections that I wanted to make the most dominant. Some pictures would have involved showing family portraits. That would not have been a secure thing to do. I love this home and the family.

Thanks again for your comments. I am always encouraged!

5. Betty,
I love what you’ve shown from the home in Silver Spring, MD. The warm reds certainly are inviting and stir up energy! I just transitioned from red in my dining room but love keeping touches of it around for interest. The spaces shown are delightful to the eye and very very tasteful! Keep sharing!

7. Hi Roni,

Thank you for your wonderful comments! There is something magical about red that stimulates the adrenalin. Keep that red positioned in your home, if it is what stimulates you in giving you the feeling of warmth.

I love the layout of this house and the joy that you feel when you enter. The lady of the house has great taste. It’is always good when the home reflects the personality of the residents. I am sure that the owners will be pleased with your comments.

Thanks friend for sharing! Let us hear from you again soon.

9. I just painted my kitchen Long John Red (RL) and it looks beautiful. I have large sliding glass doors and used to have red lined drapes before I went red on the walls. Any good ideas for drapery colors against the red walls?
THANKS for your ideas in advance.

10. Hi Betty,

I love your colors. Photo #1 - Setting the table gives it a more finished and professional look. Try to double the pictures on the walls, 2 on each side of the mirror. Photo #2 - If you have more african sculptures, frame the windows (up and over the windows) along with some gold patterned drapes. Just a few ideas… You can never have too many plants; artificial is OK. And last try to unclutter the bookcase, too many books. Try laying a stack of books down with space between the artwork. Happy Decorating !

11. I love the decor because the items displayed in each “frame” give a contemporary appearance with antique ambiance. Red walls give a very simple yet elegant aura.

by Richelle — 10/1/07 at 12:59 pm #

12. Hi Stephanie,

I’ll bet your kitchen is beautiful! What are the other colors in your kitchen? The best color would be a lighter color. A darker color would make the room dark. You want to make certain that the color of your drapes coordinates with your furnishings/colors in the room, as well. Some colors that would look good for your drapes are kakhi colored, beige, white, cream, etc. In actuality, a lighter color would brighten up the room.

Let me know what you decide. Also, let me know the color of your furnishings in the room. Thanks loads!

15. Hi Betty,

I love the colors! I have always been a neutral color person, but the colors in these rooms are great. They look so rich and welcoming. I may have to break down and paint something red. I love it!

by Glenda — 10/3/07 at 4:27 pm #

16. Hi Glenda,

I am so pleased that you love the vibrance of this home. I am also pleased that you state that you are anticipating changing from the neutral colors to the vibrance of red (smile). I have always been a person who loves and appreciates the feeling I get when I have red in the room, even if the room is not painted red. When you break down to paint your room/rooms other colors, let us know.

This is a wonderful environment where every aspect has such rich and wonderful display of love. There was so much more to show, but I couldn’t, because I didn’t want to extend the post with more than 5 pictures. There was more art and beautiful pieces in the dining room, the living room and the library. I also fell in love with the armoire that graced the library. Maybe the next time under another category.

Again, thanks loads!

17. Hi Betty,

This house is so beautiful. I love the coordination of colors and furniture. It looks like just the right place to entertain. I really love leopard chairs and the striped drapes. What a beautiful combination.

18. Hi Carla,

You are right! It is a beautiful house and your comfort level is established once you walk in the front door. It is also a great place for entertaining. I am so pleased that you have enjoyed what you have seen and that you like the leopard chairs and the stripe drapes. That combination highlights the library. Another beautiful sight that I could not show was the glass doors that lead you from the living room into the library. I am so sorry that I could not show you everything. I had to limit my pictures for the post. These are the limits that I put on my posts.

Thank you so much for your comments and support. We always look forward to hearing from you.

19. Hi Betty,
I love your ideas and decorating tips. Your choice of colors is great and I appreciate the in depth answers you give. Please continue to post ideas for rooms for babies. My daughter and my daughter in law are pregnant and I love to find unique things for them. Items with pictures of children of color are particularly special to me and they are still hard to find.
Home Goods had a great idea when they started this site. It’s so much fun having a chance to gather fabulous ideas sitting at the computer.

I am so pleased that you love this site! HomeGoods wants all of their customers to feel that they are providing a service just for them. They try to personalize and share their great merchandise. I always love the unique and exciting things that I can find at HomeGoods. I get excited, like you, when I find items that are so precious and special and I know the price is just right. I agree with you, I too, love the pictures and items that depict children of color. HomeGoods is determined to provide services that are all inclusive. I am so happy that you sent such a warm and wonderful letter. We look forward to hearing from you again. Keep sharing!

21. Love your choice of colors. The art work is great too.

In the dining room did you consider turning the mirror horizontal? Then adjusting the 2 smaller framed pieces within the vinette? It might make it more uniform and add interest when seated at the table.

by Dee — 10/11/07 at 12:13 pm #

22. Hi Betty,

The red in those rooms really make a great statement. It gives everyone an insight on how to embrace color. I just tell people to go for it . Painting a room is the less expensive to create a new look and if you don’t like it go back and repaint.

23. Beautiful home! Love the beautiful chairs by the window. Great color!

by Mia — 10/12/07 at 10:21 am #

24. Hi Dee,

Thank you for your wonderful comments and suggestions! You sound like a decorator. (smile) The lady of the house considered all aspects of decorating and decided that this was a design that she liked best and that worked best for them.

Again, we thank you for taking the time to share. Keep in touch with us. We look forward to your sharing.

by Betty — 10/15/07 at 1:22 pm #

25. Hi Yvonne,

Thanks for your wonderful comments about the color of the dining room. The red color is so invigorating! You are right, it does show us how we might embrace color. It’s wonderful to realize that if we don’t like the color that we arrive at, all that we have to do is repaint. Great!

We look forward to hearing from you again! Again, we thank you.

by Betty — 10/15/07 at 1:33 pm #

26. Hi Mia,

Thank you for your wonderful comments! Leopard and animal print designed chairs are the fashion statements this year. They are beautiful additions to this wonderful room and to this beautiful home.

You are right! This is a beautiful home and the owners have great taste. I am glad that you find the transition from one room to another exciting. And yes, the house is very warm and most inviting. I love it and I am glad that you do, as well.

29. I love your stores but dislike the locations in Illinois. We the people of the South Suburbs like to shop. Matteson, IL is booming. Why don’t you all get a store out here. Not Orland Park, no offence But we want some more good stores and The Home Good Store is one of them.

30. Hi RJ,

Thank you so much for your comments. We have passed your feedback onto the appropriate department for their review.
