My dh had to undergo a rare open heart surgery a week and a half ago. We are so thankful that after one day in the ICU and nine days on the cardiac floor, we have returned home! The weather in StL is perfect at this time of the year. The highs near 80 degrees, and the lows in the lower 60’s. We couldn’t wait to get outside.
This is a collage of pictures taken in our backyard. One of the first things I did today was feed the birds. We love treating our patio like another room in our home. In fact, I am thinking of adding a couple of sisal rugs next Spring to give the area even more of an inside feel.
I enjoy having a variety of bird feeders around to attract many different birds. Truthfully, we also attract squirrels, raccoons, chipmunks, turtles, and deer. Oh what a yummy treat will do to entice visitors.
I try to stop and remind myself that my yard provides an invitation to decorate as well. Just one more place to enjoy the people and things we love.
1. Deb,
My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family! I’m glad to hear that everything is going well. Whle I was readng your post, I was reminded of my backyard. We only have 2 birdbeeders at the present time, one on each side of our screened pool. It is amazing the animals that congretate there! Of course we have birds (cardinals, bluejays, doves), etc., but we also have resident squirrels that I wouldn’t dream of shooing away. They are so adorable hanging down by their tails to feed on the sunflower mixture we provide for the birds. What is funny is that the birds co-exist with the squirrels! They’re both gettng used to each other. When it rains the squirrels manage to stay dry by wrapping their little bodies around the feeder as we have a wide copper roof on both feeders. Now at night it’s a different story. Right around dusk and after if we forget to bring the beeders in we hear a few little screeches. The raccoons have come out! They are so bold that they come our during the day now and attack the feeders. If we’re not careful, they either drain the feeders of all the seed or they knock them to the ground and drag the entire feeder off! My husband has found the feeders at the edge of the woods. Of course, like the squirrels we wouldn’t begrude the raccoons THEIR food, so we buy dry dog food (the chunky kind) and put it in a aluminum bowl on the ground right where the feeders are so they kjnow there’s food for them. They also get leftovers. We have provided food for 4 families so far. Mama raccoon got so used to us that we almost could feed her by hand, but we know they carry rabies so we refrain from doing so. But I touched the top of her head once and she sniffed my fingers just like a cat.
I am so happy to read that you provide “meals” to your furry and feathered friends as well.
Take care and thanks for your post. It brought a bright spot to my day.

4. Oh Janet, thank you for your kind encouragement. I do love the critters. I also want to thank you for the dry dog food suggestion. I recently bought a 50 lb. bag of food for my little bichon, just before the vet put her on a prescription food. Now I know what to do with all of the leftovers. Your yard sounds like a wonderful place to get away from life’s hustle and bustle. Thanks again. Deb

5. Hi Deb,
I’m so glad you’re back home with your husband and all went well. Its interesting, when you go through a stressful time and then the stress lifts it seems your whole environment seems to be more special and appreciated. I’m glad you’re out enjoying your yard and nature. Nothing’s more wonderful than the song of a bird, and I’m sure you have many.
The picture collage is ART. Truly wonderful, a great reflection of your love of nature Deb.
All the Best,
Cathy

6. Thanks so much to each of you for your kind encouragement. My dh continues to regain his strength and gradually is up and doing a little more each day. We are so thankful. The combination of the color green and the critter activity is very soothing. Live entertainment without leaving home!

7. Dear Deb,
So happy to hear he is home once again. I know from my hubby’s surgery, these next few weeks are stressful and as his caretaker, busy ones. Your yard looks like such a peaceful place to nurture your soul. Take care of yourself too. I will continue to keep you and your family in my prayers
