As the days cool off, out come the throws and afghans. Throws are a great addition of color and texture to a room, as well as being very functional. We all love to wrap up in them and read a book or watch TV. The throw got its name from being thrown over a chair or sofa in a haphazard way. A great look and feel in a room, but…

…Try taming the throw by folding it neatly in thirds or forths lengthwise, and lay it over the back and seat cushions. Tuck it into the crevices of the cushions. Add a pillow or leave as is. This can really change the look of the chair. It can give a bold graphic contemporary statement (top photo) or add warmth and texture to a traditional setting (above photo). This idea works best with solid colors or textures and a lightweight throw or small blanket. The interest here, lies in the two contrasting colors and stripe effect. Don’t overdo this look. One chair per room or a matching pair of chairs and throws would work as well. You could also arrange the throw on a sofa, in the middle or off to one side.

I bought this chair at a parking lot rummage sale for $30. It needs to be recovered, but until then, I cleaned the upholstery, removed the skirt, and stained the legs dark. It helped, but with the addition of a throw and some pillows, it dressed it up a bit for now.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I get tired of looking at my things the same way. I find, just a few small changes can make a room feel a little fresher and new again. Give this a try and see if you like the results.
1. Hi Cathy,
Not only did you warm up the chair, you added color and beauty with the comfort of the chairs. Great job!!!

2. Thanks Betty,
Its always nice for a little change now and again. Even if its something as simple as rearranging a throw.

3. Very fun! I love the way you entirely changed the whole space. It’s very warm now, outside of really dressing up the chair itself.

4. Thank you Rebecca,
Just a few simple changes will freshen up a space. No cost usually.
Play around with what you have and see what you come up with.
Thanks for commenting.

5. I love this idea for my leather sofa – will give it a tried once I find the right blanket. Also do you suggest breaking up a sofa set (love seat – chair – and three seater) and taking one of the above into another room and adding a different color/materiel sofa with the other two? What are your thoughts on this?

6. Hello Sadie,
This throw idea would work well on a leather sofa. Adds another texture and color.
Your question about breaking up a set of leather furniture…
If this is in a den or family room and you need the durability of the leather to seat a group of people, then its fine. I do like more of a mix of furnishings in a living room so its not so matched. Maybe take out the loveseat and add a textured fabric chair to the mix. Or two smaller fabric chairs to the sofa and leather chair. Its just more interesting, a more collected look and not a set of something.
Thanks for asking.

7. Cathy, Thanks for your idea! I have a couple of throws that always end up on the floor! This should be a great way to rein them in. I intend to give it a try this afternoon!

11. Thanks Cathy …I’m feel more comfortable now moving the love seat into the den as I agree adding another material and texture to the living room will be interesting. My husband and dad think seperating the set is crazy …however its furniture you can alway move it right!!
Thanks for the advise and will try and post some pic’s soon. thanks Sadie
