Christmas 07 133

A few samples of what I’ll be using this year.

Christmas 07 138

As I showed in my previous post, ” Christmas Decorating, Now?”, I’ve been adding some black and white Damask style stencil patterns to my existing decorations this year. I decided to stencil as much as I could because its easy and inexpensive to do. It makes a big statement as well.
I purchased a couple yards of white cotton fabric to make a pillow, stockings, and table runner, (stencil on the flat fabric BEFORE you sew them). Most of the other stuff to stencil on, I had or could be purchased easily…bags, ornaments, candles, plates etc. The flat paper ornaments were stenciled on shiny photo paper, then cut out and a hole punched, add a ribbon or cord to hang.

Here’s a few other things that can easily be stenciled.

(well used stencils as you can see, clean them as much as you can)

I won’t go into how to stencil, its easy, (Google…How to stencil). You will need some stencils, brush and craft paint. They can be purchased at craft stores or online. A few years ago I found a great book called “The Stencil Book” in a bookstore. It has a wonderful collection of Classic design motif stencils. I’ve used it quite a bit. Find the designs you like the best. Instead of painting the black, maybe go red, gold or silver or any color that goes with your decor.

Also, Stenciling can make GREAT gifts !!! Match someones decor with a great pillow, painted box, napkin set, towels, plates, clay pots, placemats, pillowcases, fabric handbags, scarves, a million things you can dress up with a trendy stencil! Add a MONOGRAM stencil to personalize it further.

Have fun with it, you’ll be surprised at how great it turns out.

3. Thanks Alli and Betty,

Thanks for your great comments and support.

Its been fun stenciling, although it becomes addicting at times. Lots more to do, at least I have a start. Decorating for the Holidays is fun and a great time to try some new ideas as well as keep the old traditions.

Happy decorating to you too.

5. Hi Julie,

The ornaments were the hardest to stencil because of the round shape.
You just have to hold them on and roll- as- you- go around the ornament. Do a few practice ones on a jar or an orange, (wash the paint off quickly after). Not too hard after you try a few.
Thanks so much for all your great comments!

8. Hello Beth,

The Book is called. The Stencil Book, by Louise Drayton and Jane Thomson, published by Dorling Kindersley in 1994. $14.95 at that printing. You might try a large bookstore like Barnes and Noble or Borders. Its a great book if you’re into stenciling or interested in classic design motifs. Instruction is included. Hope you’re able to find it.
