I love gift giving more than anything, but in the past I’ve gotten caught up in all the holiday good cheer, and ended up spending a bunch more than I meant to spend. This year I am giving myself a budget – per person and per gift – and I am limiting myself to cash, no credit. I just read a study indicating that on average, those who use credit cards to buy their gifts during the holidays, don’t get those bills completely paid off until July. A little scary, because if you do take that long to pay, and tack on all those months of interest charges, your Black Friday deals will end up costing a fortune. So this year, it’s a debit card for me.

I love gift giving so much that I can get fixated, obsessed with finding the perfect gift. So, I slip into super sleuth mode, observe, and ask questions to really get to the bottom of what people want for the holidays. So far my “fly on the wall” technique has revealed that: my parents need some nice wine glasses; my niece (who is about to finish graduate school) needs a presentable bag to impress her new bosses; Stephen secretly wants a Nintendo Wii, and needs some new grey socks (he is trying out this grey sock only thing, rationalizing that they go w/ anything, and with all one color he never has to worry about matching socks after the wash. A whole other blog, but I’ve decided the idea is worth my support); and that my pets are spoiled and don’t really need anything. But I’ll spend too much money on them anyway.

When buying gifts, I go for things that are unexpected, functional, or both, and I always try to be specific to the person. For the traveler in your life, for instance, a simple, clear bag, of federal aviation regulation style and size, pre-packed with chic, or favorite toiletries makes an excellent gift. These types of gifts are inexpensive, but the time you put into them, and the time you save your friend, colleague, or loved one, really make them shine – especially if it’s the kind of thing that always tends to get moved to the back burner if you have to do it on your own. I would love to have someone pull something together for me like this…hint, hint.

Quite possibly my most successful unexpected gift ever, fancy packing aside, was a really top-notch massaging chair pad that I gave my parents a few years ago. They draped it over their rocking chair, and the combination of the rocking and massaging is a fool-proof sleep inducer. Even the most unexpected gifts should be selected to fit the recipient. Just because you’re 87-year-old Aunt Erma would be surprised to find a pot-bellied-pig with a bow on it’s head under her tree, doesn’t mean you should get her one.

1. I completely agree on setting a budget for all gifts. All gifts can be beautiful and tasteful at any price. After all, it’s the thought that goes into each gift. When I shop on a budget, I really take my time and put all my heart into each gift I give. From the box it goes into, to the way it’s wrapped. Who said all gifts have to cost a fortune.

3. Is there a way to search all of your local stores for a specific item. I purchased 5 chairs this week and need 1 more chair. The model # is 113981 Dept. 46 - either with arms $99. or without $79. I’d appreciate help.
Thank you.

4. Hi Evette,

I’m a bit of a geek in that I LOVE a good excel spreadsheet, so I keep track that way - it keeps me honest!

I so agree with you about thoughtful vs expensive gifts. The best gifts my hubby got me the Xmas we were preparing to move to yet another state was new windshield wipers and a McD g/c. I was going to be a single mom for 2 months during the transition, and it was a very thoughtful gift!

5. Hi Barbara,

We understand that you have been trying to locate a chair. As an off-price retailer, we make every effort to keep our prices low, and our costs down, so that we can pass these savings on to our customers. For this reason, we do not provide a service of tracking merchandise. In addition, we do not have the privilege of ordering specific merchandise from our vendors. To locate the chair, we suggest that you continue to check with the stores in your area directly. We would be happy to provide you with store locations in your area. If you would like a store list, please e-mail us back, or call our Customer Service Department directly at 1-800-888-0776.

Sincerely,
Jessica

6. I have five children, so Santa’s bill after Christmas could easily get to be unbelievable if we let it, but my husband and I started a tradition a few years back that really works. Our children only get three gifts for Christmas. Jesus only got three, and since we are celebrating HIS birthday, we thought what a great way to not let the kids be distracted by ALL the commercialism of the stores and television. Our teenagers even understood why we were doing that, and had no problem jumping on board.
Merry CHRISTmas!!!!

12. Coming from a HUGE Italian family, gift giving became cost prohibitive. As decade ago, we all decide to throw all our names in a hat and pick one. We decided to only give a gift to the named person we chose, but set the $ limit a little higher, since we all would only be buying one gift. This idea has really worked and we all get something wonderful, don’t break the bank and have fun spending the holiday the way it was intended - with the love of family.

Happyiest of Holidays!
