A Yule Log is a wonderful natural decoration or gift to make to give to someone. Leave a Yule Log by someones door, ring the doorbell and run… a fun little surprise, and kids love to do this with you! Or, make one for yourself to set by the fireplace. Its best when all of the materials are natural if you want to burn the log at the end of the season. If not, add whatever you want.

To make a Yule Log…Start with a dry log about 16″-22″ long. Find some natural green yard clippings like…pine, evergreens, holly, berries, cedar, pyrocantha, seed pods etc., about 3 ft. of wire, raffia for the bow, fruit, nuts, long cinnamon sticks, pinecones, long matchsticks, small bamboo skewers, any natural item will work. Use what you have, it will come out great.

Heres how it goes together…

1. lay the 3 ft. long wire underneith the center of the log.
2. layer greens, largest first, smaller pieces on top.
3. pull the wire up over the greens and twist tightly.
4. add on top of that… berries, cinnamon sticks, any long materials.
5. retwist same wire over those.
6. slip raffia under log in center, pull up over everthing and tightly tie a bow.
7. poke bamboo skewers into the fruit and push skewer in under the bow.
8. wire picks to pine cones and stick in around the fruit
9. glue gun on some nuts, a faux bird, (a real one might stink after a while, LOL) or anything natural.
10. poke in long wood matches around the fruit.

This is a beautiful, inexpensive, or no cost, natural decoration that the Scandinavians gave to their neighbors to wish them a Merry Christmas. They would burn the decorated log after it dried at seasons end for a warm and prosperous new year.

I hope YULE make some of these. YULE enjoy it and so will your friends.

1. Hi Cathy,

I had not seen a YULE Log before. This is absolutely lovely! What a great idea and what a tremendous gift! I can see that many people will decide to give a gift of this nature. It means even more that the individuals will take the time to make it themselves. Great Job!

Thank you for sharing with us. We learn something new everyday.

Be Blessed!

2. Hello Betty,

Yes, these Yule Logs are fun and easy to make. Not a lot of people know about this tradition. But its a thoughtful gift of nature to give someone. I give these to people who, I know don’t like or can’t have sweets. Just something to say you’re thinking of them at Christmas.
If you give this to someone, add a card stating its a Scandinavian tradition given to friends to wish them a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
Blessings to you too,
Cathy
