Happy New Year! My dh and I were talking last night, and thinking about the months ahead. It is fun to talk and dream about the future. Whether those dreams are actualized or not they keep us anticipating what’s coming rather than finding ourselves stuck in the past. Our goal is to try to live in the present, with a hope for the future.
The pictures above were taken in Colonial Williamsburg, one of our favorite getaways. We talk about building one more home. We haven’t decided on when or where; we simply dream about what we would like this future house to look like. We are at a phase in our lives when simplifying seems like a great idea. We would like to focus on clean lines and simple spaces decorated for pleasure and comfort.
Maybe 2008 will be the year you make plans for a new home . . . maybe you have a home improvement project in mind . . . or simply a room you want to redecorate. These short days with longer evenings make the perfect time to dream and plan. We would love to hear your plans and dreams for projects you would like to do this year or beyond. Dream huge! Dream big! Dream small! Just make sure to dream!
1. I think dreaming of your ideas is the best part! I keep “inspiration” folders by room and as I read magazines, I clip pages and file them. It really helps me find my style, but also helps clients find inspiration as well.
Funny…I just wrote an article called “Resolve to improve that problem room!” which discusses why people put off updating their homes – there is a link to it from my website.
I think my dream home would be far, far away from the cold, and near the ocean. I love that bed in the pic!

2. Deb,
I would love to visit Williamsburg some day. Such great history to relive.
Beautiful pictures, the bedroom looks so clean and cozy.
Yes, hope and dreams are what keep us going.
Where are you thinking of building a new house? How exciting!
We have many hopes and dreams for the future, whether they all materialize or not, is inconsequential, just the ideas and thoughts help you look to the future with joy and optimism.
Dream on dear friend,
Cathy

3. Susan, I love the idea of “inspiration folders.” I need you to come help me get organized. I have a folder, but all of my decorating dreams are together. You have inspired me to get more specific so that I will be able to find things more easily.
Cathy, You are right. Dreams help us to stay optimistic. What does Cinderella say, “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes?” We don’t know where we would like to build yet, but we are getting close on what we would like when we decide on the location.
Thanks girls, keep dreaming!

4. Hello Deb,
How are you? This is the advice I give to all my clients. If you want inspiration and hope make yourself a vision board. Everything that you have ever hoped for, dreamed about and prayed for find those pictures in old magazines. Any special quotes that speak to your heart glue them on your board. Everyday look at your vision, always have gratitude and start believing that your worthy of every dream
.
Many Blessings,

7. Terry,
I loved your suggestion about the vision board. I definitely need to organize all of my thoughts and dreams. It seems that we so often get stuck in the dreaming, and fail to move ahead due to the lack of planning. I am learning that even baby steps toward a goal move me a little closer every day. Thanks again for helping us to put our dreams into plans of action.

8. I am considering putting faux wood floors in my kitchen…it would be cherry wood . My current flooring is the vinyl tiles, green marble color.
I have the old fashioned white metal cabinets, blue green countertops, chrome trim, white refrigerator, black stove. I do have oak trim , a small amount in my kitchen. Kitchen table creamy white with tan trim; ditto for the chairs.
I still like the look of the “old fashioned” kitchen.
What are your feelings as to this flooring? Do you have the faux wood in your kitchen? Are you happy with it? Any suggestions as to a new paint…curtains..decor?

9. Hi Alice,
I have the faux wood in my kitchen, and I love it. It is so easy to care for and always looks great. I will make one suggestion however, when the installers were here, they told me that they felt it was important to select a high quality laminate. Thankfully they felt that I had achieved that goal. Evidently as in all things those of lesser quality do not hold up as well. I have had mine now for two years and it looks just as good as the day it was installed.
As far as decor suggestions, I think I would try to pick up some of the black and blue green in my accents like curtains and table linens. Take a look at some of Cathy’s posts, she has done a beautiful job of using black and white with primary color accents. You might even want to consider going with black on the floor, or a black and white check, that would go with your “old fashioned” theme.
Have fun! I am often anxious when I do a big decorating project but am always so happy that I went to the effort.

11. Miss, Your sunroom sounds fabulous! I too struggle a bit with deciding on paint color. The difference are seem so subtle on color strips, but on a large wall . . . whew! I’m glad you are pleased with your choices. Have fun at HG! Appointing a room is the best part!!
