I haven’t posted for a while because I’ve been busy working on some designs for some clients of mine. I was trying to think of something to write about and decided to write about what I’ve been doing. I don’t know if you’d be interested in seeing some plans for an upstairs Bonus Room. But I’ll show you anyway… (you’re a captive audience, LOL). The function of the room is TV/movie watching, lounging, game playing for a family of 4. Their style is, a little, tropical contemporary. We will be starting from scratch, except for white shutters on windows, new warm beigh wall color and carpet ,and they will be building in dark cabinets on 2 walls.

This is the space plan of the room. The biggest but most subtle change is on the walls. I’m proposing wide horizontal stripes around 3 walls. A total of 5 stripes, 22 inches wide, with 3 of them being one shade darker than the existing wall color. Its called a tone on tone application. Easy but dramatic interest to the room.

This is a before view of this wall and the drawing of the proposed design. Large stripes on walls, Mango colored draperies and pillows, series art, 24 in. large drum shade lamps, striped pillows and ottomans.

This is the before and proposed design idea. They will be building in some cabinetry. Stripe continues around room, 2 rattan slipper chairs with mango pillows, palm tree, family pictures.

This is the before of the window wall and proposed design idea. Stationary mango linen side drapery, stripes continue on wall, same rattan chair as above.

This is the sample/story board for the furnishings, fabrics, and additional design plans. Mango and a pear color are the accent colors. The rattan chairs, a brown chenille angled sectional and area rug anchor the room. The story board helps the client visualize what you are proposing to them.

Even though this design looks complete, there will be many changes before its all done. I will be presenting this design next week and hope I was able to design what I perceived, her vision was. We’ll see… I’ll keep you posted on the progress and will post the finished room in a few months.

LOVE IT Do you LOVE IT?

1. Here you go again…you just amaze me…
I’m sitting here where it is 2 degrees below zero and those mango
colors and palm tree and tropical theme look wonderful.
Where are you ever going to find ottomans that shape?

The before pictures really give me an idea of how much you have to do….tons…but it will be fabulous!

2. Hi Julie,

It should be a fun room to decorate. The colors are fresh and crisp next to the browns and beighs. The ottomans can be ordered with the sofa in that shape. We liked it because it was a little different and edgy. I’m glad you like the wall treatment. It will add alot of subtle drama to the room without too much expense or work.
Sorry you’re so cold. Wish I could send you some Calif. sunshine.
Thanks so much for your great comments. Talk to you soon.

3. Hi Cathy,

Your design is fantastic! You touched on 3 of my favorite elements for rooms that kids hang out in: Chenille, ottomans, and slipper chairs! Practical yet beautiful! Be sure you post the after pictures! I might try the tone-on-tone stripes…great way to add interest without overwheming a room.

4. Great to hear from you Susan,

Thanks so much for your comments. Yes, form always follows function. Decorating in areas where children will enjoy relaxing and hanging out, you have to have durable fabrics and finishes. But it doesn’t have to be boring and dull. I hope she likes the BIG stripe effect on the wall…my favorite part of the room. I’m presenting tomorrow…wish me luck!
Talk again soon.

8. Thanks so much Bev,

I’m glad you like the room design. The curved sofa sectional and ottomans are a Bassett Furniture product. A custom piece. They have a good selection of fabrics and options. We will add in another section to the 4 pieces for more seating. Yes, I’ll post more as the room comes together.
Thanks for your interest. Write back soon.

10. Hi Bev,

No, you didn’t miss anything. The bonus room is on hold for right now. I will post the room when and if it gets further along. Sometimes design projects get delayed for many reasons. Hopefully, we will be able to see this through, in the near future.
Thanks for your interest.
