Is your bathroom a little boring? Try some super stripes.

Bathrooms are great places to try different wall painting ideas. The room is small and doesn’t take a lot of time or money to make a BIG statement. These horizontal paint stripes caught my attention.

The striped wall below, looks great with the different stripe widths around the whole room. 4 thick, 3 thin. This application would look good in a guest bathroom, 1/2 bath, or any bath. Even a laundry room.
I like the way wide horizontal stripes really update the look of a room. Vertical stripes seem more traditional and predictable, whereas the horizontal stripes look so fresh, new and exciting. They also work well with any design style.

What could be easier than sectioning off the walls into large stripes. If you want 5 even stripes, measure your wall height…8ft.wall = 96″, divide by 5 = 19.2″ stripes ( measure just wall area, not baseboards and crown mouldings). Use blue painters tape and a level to tape off stripes. Watch your colors. You don’t want it to look like a circus tent. A tone on tone application is nice. Or shaded colors will keep it interesting but not intense. Pick a color that compliments your homes decor.

This one’s a little more involved but very rich looking. A stone tile and wood veneer were used to create the stripes. Look at how this stripe design expands the room, with the reflection in the mirror. Very spa-like, hotel chic.

There are many ways to add a stripe effect to a room. If you need a little update, especially in a bathroom, try some horizontal stripes for the WOW factor in a little space. You’ll love the look, and it adds lots of interest and bang-for-the-buck as well.

1. Cathy, you are a mind reader! I just posted under the Hotel Chic Bathroom topic, and told you about painting my vanity black. I also asked your opinion as to what color stripes I should use when painting the walls. I’m glad you posted these pictures.

2. Oh, yes, I might add that the ceiling in my small bath is “pitched,” or comes to a point at the top, so maybe horizontal stripes aren’t for me. I’m thinking vertical might be best, right?

3. Hi Janice,

Were on the same wavelength. I wrote back in “Hotel Chic”. Before you do the vertical stripes in your bath, think how these big horizontal strips might look. Could be COOL. I’ll leave it up to you. Even with your pitched ceiling. Give it a little thought. Let me know what you decide.

4. I definitely like the horizontal stripes, so it will be a tough decision to make, that’s for sure. When you painted your small bath — the one with vertical stripes — what type paint did you use? That is, did you use flat, satin, semi-gloss, etc.?

by Janice — 3/25/08 at 10:12 am #

5. Hey Janice,

I used a low sheen or you can use a satin. The gloss level just above flat should be fine if the bathroom isn’t used heavily. Semi-gloss is a little too shiny and may not stripe as well…too slick. I’m anxious to hear if you use the horizontal or vertical stripes. Either one would look great. Keep me posted.

6. Thanks for the info, Cathy. I’m still debating about the stripes, but will let you know what I decide. It would be very adventurous of me to go with the horizontal, because I usually like to play it safe! LOL But, of course, it was a big step for me to paint the vanity black — so I’m venturing out of my comfort zone a bit. By the way, did you notice my messages under the Touch of Summer topic and also Sizing Up Lamps? You just never know where I’m going to turn up! LOL

7. I just recently did a horizontal stripe in my small bathroom. I painted this before coming across your website.

I surprised my husband who thought I was painting it a solid color. I love the horizontal stripes. I used a semi gloss. The only drawback I had was getting crisp clean edges to my color changes.

8. Hello Blanche,

I was so excited to hear you had painted the horizontal stripes in you bathroom. I bet they look fantastic. It really gives that little space some personality. To get that crisp clean edge it’s better to go with a lower sheen paint, an eggshell or satin. Many low sheen paints now are very durable for bathroom use.
Thanks so much for writing in and sharing your “striping” experience.
Enjoy!

11. HELP! I need some ideas/suggestions about vertical stripes but not in the bathroom. Let me explain and I hope you can tell me if this is a good idea or not. I live in a rather small townhome and there is a long, contiguous wall along the kitchen and living room. The only thing dividing the two is where the tile ends and the carpet begins. I would like to show a little division but nothing glaring. I was thinking about painting the wall the same color (probably a tan/beige) and where the carpet begins (the living room) start using vertical stripes in a shade much lighter than the tan/beige. Would this create a subtle division between the two rooms and how do you think it would look. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

12. SUPER DUPER IDEA DIANE,

A perfect but subtle way to seperate the two areas. Yes, you need to go vertical on this one. Keep the colors closely related as you said. It should look MAHVELOUS…I’m going to steal your idea. You guys are great with those ideas!!!
Thanks for sharing.

13. Hi everyone out there………….I have a post-war small bathroom with cream-yellowish kind of ceramic tile with a black border surrounding the bathtub and walls. Is there any way I can change the color of the ceramic tile without the expense of retiling. Also, my toilet has an exposed flushing device (a pipe). In oher words there is no tank. It’s awful looking and I would like to hide the darm thing somehow. I live in a co-op apt. building and all 94 units were built the same. Would appreciate anyone’s advice.

14. Hi…could you recommend a color or color stripes for a small bathroom, white tiled floor, white vanity, with a black marbelized vanity top> I
m in a new home and am completely puzzled with this combo without going too modern, which I am not. Thank you

by Phyllis — 5/16/08 at 4:43 pm #

15. Hi Nellie,
It sounds like a great vintage bathroom, but sometimes the color schemes are hard to work with. Yes you can repaint tile, as long as it’s not in areas of constant moisture. Check online or at a good paint store to find out how this is done. Less expensive than retiling, but it has to be done right to work. On to hiding a pipe behind your toilet. Can you box in the pipe with drywall and paint it the wall color. What about a large piece of art over it or disguise it as a window with a shade or drape. Does anyone else have any ideas ???
Good luck. hope something works.

16. Hi Phyllis,

I think the wide hortzontal paint stripes in you bathroom would look great.
What colors are you using in your home? Take one of those colors and find two colors next to each other on a paint chip…tone on tone color, not high contrast colors. This will keep it more transitional less modern as you wanted. Your B/W furnishings will blend with most anything. Paint the large stripes as shown. Maybe add a beautiful silver ornate carved mirror over the sink to bring in a more traditional feel. It will feel fresh and updated.

17. hi, i was wondering if i did my base colour orange and my stripes a light freen if that would look good?

by michelle — 1/31/09 at 1:41 pm #

18. Hello Michelle,

I’m glad your’re considering the stripes. Your two colors are bright and high in contrast. If you want that look, fine. I would paint some poster boards to see if you like the combination first, then procede. It will be a high energy space. Fun and full of color.

Good luck!

by Cathy — 2/2/09 at 11:43 am #

19. What is the brand and color of the two paints that you used in the beige and taupe room? I would love to use that combination in our powder room.
Thanks.

by Nora — 3/17/09 at 2:20 pm #

20. Hello Nora,

I did not paint this room so I don’t have the paint color names. Try a few paint colors on poster board before you commit to get the color your like. The easiest way to get colors that work well together in a tone on tone stripe, is pick one 7 color paint chip and find the darker color you like for the dark stripe, then go up a shade or two on the same chip to paint the lighter stripe. Blends beautifully because they are in the same value range.

21. I was curious to know how thick the green stripes are in the first picture shown. It looks like 10-12 inches, but I am not sure. Thanks for your help.

by Lisa — 4/3/09 at 6:03 pm #

22. Hi, I wanted to know the width of the green stripe (wider stripe) in the first picture. I love this style, I am currently painting my bathroom the same way. Thank you,
Lisa

by Lisa — 4/3/09 at 10:56 pm #

23. Hi Lisa, Lisa,

OK, according to my calculations. If the room is 8′ tall, thats 96″. Subtract 3, 6″ (18″ total) light stripes, that gives you 78″. Divide that by 4 stripes (click on enlarged picture). That gives you 19.5 for the width of each stripe. So, for that paint application, in that height of room, the stripes were about 19″. Use this calculation to fiqure your room if it’s different from this.

Love those stripes, your’s will look great!
