Usually we associate “Less is More” with the hotel industry.  However, this is one hotel owner that has been living with the “Less is More” approach to life for quite some time.  He has concluded that he prefers to concentrate on the “More” and live with greater comfort.  Even though he owns two major hotels and is presently building three more, he has decided to remain in the home that he loves and has lived in for more than 28 years.  His solution has been to renovate and redecorate.

Being a hotel owner and being responsible for every aspect of building the hotel from the ground up, he has a very strong sense of what he wants and what he must have to establish his comfort level.  There were two of us who worked with him to share creative and design resources, as well as shopped to find the right pieces that would accentuate different aspects of his home.  His major requirement has been comfort and having a home that reflects his personality.

New walls; new floors; new doors; new stairs; new bathrooms; a new kitchen; a totally guttered out residence, the works! This bare room with the stacked boxes is the “entertainment room.”   It is right off from the kitchen.  What you see is the raw version, of the “before.”

This is a great room to relax in after dinner.  These comfortable leather sofas have been a part of, what was once the “lounge area,” is now the “entertainment room.”  The large glass top table, with the accompanying end tables, a tan throw on the left sofa, table lamps, and one floor lamp are some of the newer and most recent pieces acquired.

Before the renovations, this room had a mantel over top of the wood-burning fireplace.  Over the years, smoke from the fireplace (though minimal)  slowly tarnished the area over the mantel.  Now, these changes are exactly what the owner needs for the comfort he  requires.  This extensive wall unit has been installed to allow for the flat Screen TV, the round-sound system, lighted display areas for multiple art collections from world-wide travel, the electrical fireplace, the bookcases, CD organizers, a small bar, DVD organizers, etc.  The crown moulding and the chair rail, with Wainscot paneling are a wonderful addition to this room.  The windows in this room,  as well as the door and windows in the kitchen are all fashioned by “Between-The-Glass” windows.

The owner is quite pleased with the final results.  He saved money! 1. Stayed in his home that is paid for; 2. Interviewed and negotiated with contractors to get the best quality for the best price; 3. Made changes that increased the value of his home; and 4. Secured quality and style without breaking the bank.  —– As time progresses, we’ll be sharing more.  But, let us know your thoughts.

The decor of the “Hotel Chic Residence” is fabulous! I love the merging of the different patterns. The mixture of the designs adds such character! Thank you for the ideas.

2. Hi Richelle,

It’s always great to hear from you! Thank you for your comments. I enjoyed working with the decoration of this home. It is so bright and airy and comfortable to work with. The diversity and risk-taking personality of the owner, enables you to take a different thrust in decorating, that offers considerable challenges. Keep checking back. We look forward to hearing from you.!

3. Betty,

This is an amazing room. When you see the before and after pictures, it’s hard to imagine how it was put together. I think the flat-screen tv is an eye catcher. And the furniture really works together. Great job!!!

4. Hi Betty,
Happy Spring! The weather is beautiful here in CA today.
What a great job ! I love how the color of the sofas compliment the wood tones in the room. It gives the room a warm inviting feel. I see some ideas there with the built ins that I can use in my bonus room at home.

5. Hi Tony,

It is a wonderful room and the owner has a tremendous eye for what he wants and that makes it easier for things to fall in place and allows for decorative exploration. You’re right, the flat screen TV is an eye catcher and I must add, the lighted cabinets add a softness.

Thank you so much for your comments! They mean an awful lot. I am certain that the owner will appreciate what you have to say. Let us hear from you again soon.

6. Great Andrea!

I’m glad you like the colors and the style. I agree, the room does have a warm feeling and that is what the owner wanted to feel and convey. How are you making out with your tea parties? I hope that everything is going great for you and you are making all kinds of contact. How did the meeting with the church group work out?

It’s a beautiful day here, as well and I can’t wait to have weather like yours (smile).

Thanks for commenting about this Entertainment room. It’s great for you to take the time.

7. Hi Betty,

The room is wonderful! It looks very relaxing and though it is beautiful it is inviting and a room that you can also be comfortable in and “live in.” Keep up the excellent work.

9. I can use a suggestion for re-arraning a renovated dining area. I just can’t get it together. I have no photo at this time. Is there any help for me from you. Photo can be available. Thanks

10. Hi Liz,

I would be glad to help in any way that I can. Give me some idea of the room size. What pieces of furniture are in the dining room? What are the colors in this room? Do you have windows? What are the colors of the walls? If you can show me a picture, that would help, but you will not be able to upload that on the website unless your furnishings, or some furnishings are from HomeGoods in that room. You could then upload that picture under “Submit Your Finds.” Let me know what you need. I’m sure that we can find the answers.
