It was a glorious weekend in StL! Yeah! People smiled more, children shouted the arrival of Spring, and the smell of barbecue was in the air. Those of you who share seasonal experiences of hot summers and cold winters understand our enthusiasm. Suddenly our yards become extensions of our homes and we love it!

So, I just wanted to share a couple of our patio decorations. Yard decor might add needed privacy, the illusion of boundaries, conversaton starters, and best of all . . . personalization.

The above wagon is an antique from East Germany. I absolutely love it! It has seen some serious work, and I love to imagine the various ways it was used in its prime. The rock garden behind it is our neighbors, but the combination fills the space between our homes with warmth and welcome invitation. The garden is also home to a large family of chipmunks whom we find extremely entertaining.

This yard art was my dh’s creation. It stands on the opposite end of our patio and provides privacy to that side of our yard. We have also discussed using metal plant stands filled with potted plants, signs or flags, additional metal sculpture . . .

I’m sure the list could go on and on and on. The point is to make your outside an inviting place to spend the warm days and evenings ahead. We would love to hear your thoughts on the subject. Maybe something you have had in place for years, or a new project in the works for this year . . . let us know, we are waiting to hear from you.

LOVE IT Do you LOVE IT?

1. I have an extremely large yard. I just finish cleaning up all the mess. THere an area that would be great for a cazepo but I don’t know how to get rid of the weeds and make it comfortable enough to enclose it and light it up can you give me some to and of course affordable.

2. Hi Marva,

Thanks so much for your question. Our previous home was on three acres, and my dh kept over two acres of it landscaped. So, I understand the challenge of working with large spaces. We broke our space into areas, almost like rooms of a house. The space closest to the house was a formal garden with boxwoods, brick walkways, and flowers. I must admit it is a huge blessing having a family member who loves to work in the yard.

Another area included a screen house (gazebo). An inexpesinve way to go is to level your ground and use gravel for the base. Many of the wholesale stores, hardward stores, etc. have kits for the kind of structure you are asking about. We planted wild flowers around our structure to keep a variety of colors out there during the entire growing season.

I would also suggest googling the word “gazebo”, and see what happens. You can get wonderful ideas that way. Enjoy working on your project, and of course keep us informed along the way.

Thanks, Deb

6. I am looking for metal sunflower shapes that can be painted or may already be painted. I saw one in a craft book by Rosie Odonnell, she had used it to make a bird feeder and said the flower could be found at this site. The size of the flower looks to be about 12-16 inches in diameter.
Thanks for your help!
