I want to share with you a quick easy change I made to my dresser top this weekend. I have had this collection of tea cups for years. Several of them were handed down from my mother, and one she even hand painted. A wonderful memory I have from my childhood, is of my mother hosting lovely dinners. A special touch she added to each event, was to give each guest their own beautifully unique cup from which they sipped coffee as they enjoyed her scrumptious desserts.

I don’t entertain to the extent that my mother did, and I hated having the cups packed away. So, I am using them on my dresser to hold jewelry items that I am not wearing. I am enjoying having them out where I am able to see them, as they bring back so many memories.

I got to thinking about the things that can be done with a simple cup and saucer . . . especially those single ones you find that don’t match a set.

1. Use them in the bedroom, bath, kitchen, or dining room to hold trinkets
2. Give them as a hostess gift filled with: tea bags, a votive, or candy, etc.
3. Enjoy them as a small flower pot or vase
4. Line your kitchen window ledge with them and grow herbs or flowers
5. Set one or two on your nightstand with a votive to add a little romance
6. Place them in the guest bath to hold little guest soaps or cotton balls, etc.
7. Give them as a gift to begin a collection for a new bride
8. Stop and have a tea party with your favorite little girl

I am sure the list could go on and on. I would love to hear any thoughts and ideas you have. Things you have done in the past, or ideas you might try in the future. Oh and by the way, you might even use a beautiful cup and saucer the next time you want to treat yourself to a relaxing cup of tea.

LOVE IT Do you LOVE IT?

1. Great ideas! I have several that have been handed down to me over the years, and they’re sadly tucked away in boxes. Thanks for the inspiration – I might try idea #4. I’ll let you know how it goes!

By the way, I also keep a more whimsical tea cup in the laundry room for loose change. I’m probably up to about $5 by now!

2. I am so glad to hear that I have inspired you to let your tea cups see the light of day. You have inspired me as well. I love the idea of keeping one in the laundry room for change. That is so much nicer than just tossing the coins on top of the dryer. :-) Thanks, love your suggestions.

3. love that idea! Even more I love how they are a constant memory jogger each time you see them! My Gran had a few odds and ends teacups, and after she passed, I got them. I also used them on my dresser!

4. Thanks Amanda,

I have a few demitasse cups from my Gram. She is the one who taught me my love for coffee. Since she wasn’t a tea drinker we shared our hearts over cups of coffee. It is a wonderful thing to surround ourselves with things that bring back pleasant memories. I think that is why I have such a love for antiques and heirlooms.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Deb

5. I have had quite a collection of cups/saucers and after filling up my china hutch with them, I tried to come up with other ideas for their use, they are so special to me, I LOVE the idea of the kitchen window w/herbs in them… so thanks for the ideas that each of you have shared… this is my first time on the blog and on the HomeGoods site.. I dearly love the HomeGoods store.. I’m also on the lookout for the large letter (15″ -18″) “B”.. I had purchased one in the Chatt.TN store, and have since tried to find another… can anyone help me with this one?? thanks…

6. Welcome Phyllis,

I enjoy having family in Chatt. What a beautiful city!

We are so glad that you found our OpenHouse site, and hope that you come back to visit often. I don’t know for sure how you might be able to find another letter “B”, but I do believe that if you access stores in other areas by phone they will check for you to see if they have one in their store.

Thanks for your comment, we will look forward to hearing from you again.

9. I recently started collecting coffee mugs from the European Chrstmas markets I visited last year. I’ve got about 6 now, and will hopefully get more this coming year. Do you have any ideas on how I can display them. I don’t have any surfaces like you did where I can sit them all out individually and put things in them. Besides, I’m not keen on all the dusting that will eventually have to be done after they’ve been sitting out for a while. I was thinking more along the lines of hanging them on a wall somehow. Have you ever come across a unique way to display something like a coffee mug collection by hanging them?
Thanks!

10. Hi IBPositive,

What a fantastic title-certainly a goal for which we should all aspire! Your mugs sound beautiful! I have a couple of ideas . . . you could get several of the shaker style peg boards and hang them, you could get narrow shelves and place them high near the ceiling or over a window, I also have a couple of cabinets with glass or grated fronts i use to display things. Let us know what you decide and if you want to send along a photo we would love it!!
