We finally finished this young ladies bedroom suite. I posted the space plans back in Feb. 08. I thought you might like to see how it all came together.
Our inspiration for the room, was the black and white damask and dotted fabric. We added the hot pink for a punch of color. We wanted a fun, trendy, but sophisticated room that would grow into the teen years, of a now, nine year old.
The walls were painted a warm white to pop off all of the high contrast and vibrant color. The black and white dotted wall (right side) is in the entry hall of her room. A squiggle-line area rug added a graphic contemporary feel and added a larger scaled pattern for more interest.

We had the shaped padded headboard made to fit the full size bed. It stands about 5′ high. The drapery is custom, and is a sheer fabric with tiers of shiny fringe all over and hung up to ceiling height to emphasize the higher ceiling in the room. They add great texture and fun to the room. Two, adorable pink and white chandeliers were hung high to allow kids to play. Three, Jennifer Brinley “Jet Set” prints were hung over the bed. Some simple pink vases glued on a shelf with tall daisies are displayed on both sides of the window, something a little different. Black and white dots are repeated on the duvet cover, and on a French Louis XVI armless oval backed chair (not seen here, in a later post). Also a pink gathered dust ruffle and a mix of coordinating pillows complete the bedding.

Directly across from the bed is a tall wall that excedes 12′. We needed some large scale interest on that wall but we wanted it to have a function and purpose with minimal depth. A 7′ tall by 2 1/2 ‘ wide mirror was hung, as well as 2 large padded bulletin boards. A border of hot pink paint was used to “frame” the big mirror and bulletin boards. Two pink buttons cover the screws that hold the boards to the wall. This decorated the wall area up nicely and added function as well.

A desk was needed for homework, play and display. The great rolling desk chair with pink cushion complete the look. An Eiffel tower fills a tall space and is an art piece as well.
Kids rooms are great fun to decorate. You can go a little wild and crazy and they love it. The young lady loves her new room and her Mom as well. We had a great time decorating the room together.
Check back in a few days for more of this room, a hallway, bathroom and other details will be coming.
What are some fun things you’ve done to decorate a kids room? Please share.
1. Wow! Lovely bedroom. I couldn’t imagine this room with out the pink border on the headboard or those terrific chandeliers. Great Job!

6. Hello Harry,
Thanks so much. Yes, it’s all the little details that make this so much fun.
The chandeliers had to be hardwired in to the ceiling, but I think they add alot to the mood of the room. Also very functional. The Mom said the young lady likes to read in bed now because of the “fancy” lights.
Thanks so much for your comments. It’s great to hear from you.

7. Hi Julie,
Thank you so much. Yes, it’s colorful, but girls like a lot of “Drama” in all areas of their lives. LOL. I’m sure she’ll enjoy it for many years to come.
All of the furniture is full size, so she won’t outgrow those pieces. The bulletin boards are nice to pin up all the “girl stuff” that gets collected over time. I’m sure it will be put to good use soon.
Always good to hear from you!

9. Hello Ashlyn,
I believe the desk ,hutch and chair were purchased from Pottery Barn Teen.
They have a quite few great looking pieces to choose from. These seem to work well in this space and for her needs.
Thanks for asking.
Write back soon.

11. Thanks so much Terri, Some rooms are just fun to do. This is one of those rooms. Also the planning of the whole room with drawings and furnishing samples help the client visualize how the room will look, so there are no surprises.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.

13. Hello Kristie,
So glad you like the room. Actually this style of room would work in any age group, not just young girls and teens. Change a few younger details and it’s pretty timeless. Instead of the pink, try apple or lime green, or a mango color, or, turquoise with the black and white. I wouldn’t mind a room like this! LOL
.
You asked about some things in the room…
Hot pink sheets, dust ruffle, pillowcases are from Penney’s and Target.
B/W dot duvet cover is from Pottery Barn Teen.
Decorative pillows are custom.
Headboard is custom. (Any good upholsterer can make you one or make one yourself.)
The big tall wall mirror is from Ikea. Also the area rug.
Good luck with your room. Tell us what you do and send pictures.

15. Hi Yandelly,
I’m happy you’re enjoying the room. Yes, as I said above, the room can easily change with different color trends and accesories down the road.
That’s one thing to keep in mind when you design a room for a child, think “future”. They grow up fast and you want to buy good quality anchor pieces (bed, desk, side table, dresser ect.) to see them through.
The bedding and accents can change over time. So, you can be more “trendy” and not have to replace the anchor pieces when you want a change. The same goes for the rest of your house.
Well, I won’t tell you how old I am. But with a few changes to the room I would enjoy a space like this as well. It’s a happy room!!
Thanks so much for joining us…love all your great comments.

17. Hi Sydney,
So glad you like the room. I bet you’ll have fun rececorating your room in French style. This room is a mix of styles…French, traditional, contemporary, young lady style…you name it, a real mix, but it seems to work. Mixing styles gives a room a lot of interest and keeps it from becoming “stuffy” and boring. Can’t have that here…we needed the fun factor, with a little sophistication.
The Eiffel Tower came from a local wholesale floral suppy company. But. I’ve see them in other places as well. Check HomeGoods from time to time or other home stores. Or maybe online.
Good luck with your new room. Have fun decorating.

19. Hi Veronica,
Thank you for your thoughts. The young lady liked the pink as well as the black and white, so that became our color scheme.

20. Dear Cathy,
My 11 year old daughter just loves this room. I think it is sooooooooo cute!!! I was wondering where you got the curtains, chandeliers, pillows and accsessories from? Also you are a great designer it’s just FABULOUS!!!
by Regina 8/14/08 at 6:25 pm #
21. Ohhhh, Thank you so much Regina,
I’m so glad your daughter likes the room. It’s a fun one, and the girls seem to like these colors and patterns. You asked about where to get some of the elements used in the room. If you will scroll up to comment number 13, I have a list of most everything in the room. The chandeliers are from Pottery Barn Teen. The prints above the bed were ordered online. Go to Jennifer Brinley Jet Set Prints. The eiffel tower came from a local wholesale floral suppy Co. If I missed something you want to know about, let me know.
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment and compliment.
Tell your daughter hello from me!
