July 27 006 1I just LOVE to garden but living in the city I have to content myself with container gardening on our roofdeck. At the moment I have eleven windowboxes and a couple of larger pots which I fill with annuals each spring.

Even container gardening requires some garden tools and for the past few years I’ve struggled with how best to store these so they would be safe and dry and still close at hand.

The solution came in the form of this cedar “Garden Heirloom Storage Cupboard “I found at an outlet store.  Really almost any cupboard could be outfitted to work just as well.    Mounted on the wall of our stairwell right next to the door leading out to the deck it keeps my tools up off the floor and yet still close at hand for everyday use or as I like to say, “high, dry, and level with my eye”.  I can even store my fertilizer and sprays and gloves up on top in a cute little garden container.  blog20080729 1 On the right hand door I’ve stored my plant tags for this season just in case I need to check something about their care. On the inside of the left door the cork serves as my “inspiration” board which at the moment is storing ideas I’m collecting for new deck furnishings. The decorative pail below usually sits on the landing as a repository for spent blooms.

Many gardening experts advise that you make sure your  tools are clean and dry before putting them away. If you are storing your metal tools in an outdoor shed over the winter plant your tools in a 5-pound bucket filled with sand and a quart of oil.  Apparently the oily, grainy solution will help prolong the life of your tools.

One day perhaps I’ll live in a different home and have room for a potting table or a full sized tool shed but for now this small storage cupboard solution brings a smile to my face and easily keeps all my garden tools organized.

I’d love to hear or see the unique way/place you’ve made to organize your gardening tools!

2. Hi Annie:
Nice to meet another Homegoods “fan”. I hope they do open a store in you area soon. In the meantime, it’s always worth the drive, isn’t it? Makes a fun “girls day out” whether on your own or with some good friends. What is your favorite purchase from Homegoods?
