I was looking through some pictures of home exteriors I took recently, and I was noticing a thread of elements that ran through many of the enticing entries on these homes. They were so inviting that I wanted to break down and list what stood out.

For me,  sometimes a list of things makes me more aware of the improvements I can make on  my own home. I thought you might be interested as well.

 Here are my observations…

  1. Ample use of planters, pots, and hanging baskets full of (real live) flowers.
  2. A place to sit…bench, chair, porch swing.
  3. Fresh accent color on the front door with polished hardware.
  4. Good lighting, on the path, and at the front door.
  5. A clean Welcome mat.
  6. A shaded area near or approaching the door.
  7. Visually appealing from the street.
  8. Clutter removed.
  9. A wreath, flag or door decoration .
  10. A smile and “welcome to my home” as you answer the door.

Did I miss anything?

The entry is always a great first impression of you and your home. It really draws you  to the home and more importantly,  the people that live there.

Also, if you’re selling your home, the first assessment of your property will be made walking up to your door.

Put out the “Welcome Mat” in a big way. It says so much about you and your style.  Any more ideas?

1. I love an inviting path to my home. I like to add little white lights to add an extra special touch. In the summer months I keep the lights closer to the ground by putting them through the ivy, across the front stoop & under the front door…safety first of course! It makes everything look fabulous. If I am entertaining I will add clusters of tea light candles, in an assortment of glass jars, arount the front door, flower pots & urns too.

2. Hi Laura,

I love your little light and candle ideas. I love seeing the clear “Christmas Lights” in and around a yard all year long. Especially on a pathway up to the front door. (Like lots of little fireflies) . So inviting. I’ve seen them woven through the arms of patio umbrellas to light outdoor patio tables for a party. So many great ideas and yours was one of them.

Thanks for adding to “the list”. I bet your entry is delightful.

3. Thanks Cathy for your wall color and drapery ideas however I think I may have been a little off on the color of the furniture. The sofa is gold with very small flecks of red/orange and the chair is red/orange with tiger stripes of gold. With this new information would you still suggest moss or olive as a wall color and gold draperies? Thanks again

4. Hello Antoinette,

I saw your same comment under “More Drapery Details” and commented there. Let me know if any of those are more in line with your thinking. If not, I may need some more information about the room and style you want.
Thanks for the ?
