I love words! It’s a good thing, because I spend most of my time with them. As a speaker and writer who talks all of the time, whether I have been invited to do so or not . . . words fascinate me.

I enjoy the creativity they provide. A story can be told as a comedy or a tragedy depending on the choice of words. Have you ever stopped listening to someone after only the first few words, only to realize that you missed the point altogether. I know I have. I am too busy thinking about the words I am going to say next! LOL

What does all of this have to do with decorating? I was thrilled to pick up the current issue of Country Living Magazine this morning, only to discover an article about decorating with words.

I enjoy finding plaques and photos that express a message. I have stenciled everything from walls to tote bags attempting decorative approaches to expressing my thoughts.

There are also many companies that manufacture vinyl letters which will stick to walls, making our projects even easier. I Googled: Wall Words, and a variety of companies came up. One of which is called Wallwords.

If you are looking for some ideas for a “wordy” project or two, check out Letter Perfect Craft Ideas in this month’s issue of Country Living Magazine.

Not long ago, I found the word, BELIEVE, for a wall in my home. The only problem, it was the wrong color. A little paint and I had exactly what I wanted. A little creativity ended my quest, and saved me a great deal of energy. I’m sure you have many ways you rework something old or something new in an effort to show your creativity.

Go ahead, express yourself – then let us know what you had to say!

1. Hi Deb,

I’m so with you on this one! I have an addiction to the wood standalone word’s I’ve collected at HomeGoods – I have “Joy, Family, Spa, Cafe, and yes, even Love (who say’s you can’t buy love)? ;)

I’ve used Wallword.com before as well – they’re very easy to apply. A friend of mine put a long phrase about family along the top of her hallway wall and displays tons of familly photos down the entire hallway. It looks great!

2. I love this store! We often travel through New Jersey on I-78. Can someone give me the numbers of the exits off 78 near which Homegoods stores are located?

3. Thanks Susan,

I love my wood words as well. What a great idea to combine a quote or phrase with photos! Our children want to put our grandson’s name and birthdate on the wall of the nursery. It is so much fun to use lots of words in children’s rooms, and the added benefit is that it helps them learn to read.

4. Anna,

Finding myself in the middle of the country, I don’t know about the location of the stores in New Jersey. You should be able to locate all of the stores in your area by going to the main website at: http://www.homegoods.com

Enjoy and don’t forget to let us know about all of the treasures you find.

5. Hello! My name is Lindsey and I have a 17-year-old daughter. A couple weeks ago, she redecorated her bedroom with light blue walls and chocolate brown, white accents. Back in May, I actually talked to Cathy on this site and she gave me lots of ideas, some of which we used. Above her window, it says “OC GIRL” in white letters. She has a small table/nightstand to the right of her bed and a brown desk on another wall.. On that other wall she wants to paint squares that are about 18″ of varying colors. It would cover the entire wall and have columns and rows. On the wall across from that, she has two message boards with ribbons and a big white, circular picture frame that holds many pictures. She has cream-colored carpet, white doors and white baseboards. Please let me know what you think after viewing the pictures in the “Customer Finds” gallery on this site. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you very much.

6. Hi Lindsay,

I checked out your photos. I like what your daughter is doing to her room. First of all, light blue and brown is a favorite color combination of mine. It looks great! I also like the dark wood of the tables and desk. With three grown children, I tried to give each of them say in the way their rooms were decorated. I think what I might ask of your daughter is to make a “story board,” using paint chips of the colors she would like to use in the squares. That way you are able to put your stamp of approval of them before they actually go on the wall. The good thing here is that as you have seen in several of Cathy’s posts, a “story board” is a useful technique that decorators use and a good thing for your daughter to try as she expands her decorating skills. Blessings, please let us know how things are going.

7. Thank you, Deb. I will have her make a story board, or at least show me the colors she planned on doing before the paint goes on the walls.

8. You’re very welcome Lindsey,

Hopefully, she will get excited and treat it like her first decorating class. As I have watched Cathy set up story boards, I have been inspired to try a few new things. Sometimes you change your mind as you see things on paper, and it is so much easier to change it there than it is to change the entire wall.

Let us know how things are going.

13. Thank you Deb,
I share your love of words and love decorating with them as well. I have a plaque over the entry of my kitchen door which reads “Bless All Who Enter.” A stand-alone wood plaque on top of my husband’s dresser that reads “Love Eternal” I love comforting, inspirational words, however, I’m at a loss for decor over the all white cabinets in my kitchen. I wanted wood plaques that gave a simple message but could also pertain to food or dining. I tossed out Love, Hope and Dream when I realized my husband’s sense of humor would relate that to my cooking skills. (Laughter is a great nspirational word.) Thank you for Wallwords and Uppercase living. Thanks to all the writers, what a great joy to have been inspired by you.
Ps. I will use “Land of the Free, because of the Brave” on an outdoor plaque every US holiday.

14. Thank you Marie,

You used a wonderful compilation of words to bless me! Thanks so much for your encouragement. We share not only the love of words, but a lack of it for cooking. LOL

I’m sure I can speak for all of the writers to say that we love what we do, because of our wonderful contact with women like you.

15. Not only can you find a great item you can get much inspiration at Home Goods. I found the words BELIEVE and Patience at the store.
Two words I look at everyday that have changed my life.
I love shopping at Home Goods twice a month. It’s a ELIM, a place of refreshing.

16. I’m with you on the great reminders and encouragement we can have from the words around us. Just a word like “patience,” can help me settle down and wave off the “crankies.” So, glad you enjoy HG, my husband calls it the “black hole,” I can get lost in there for hours! LOL
