I grew up with a mom who was constantly rearranging furniture and accessories. She went so far as to switch the dining and living room, and I recall each of the bedrooms at one time being mine (even the master bedroom). Sometimes it coincided with the change of seasons, other times for no reason at all!
Sure kept things interesting! Dad was a good sport, considering we didn’t have any “Moving Men” furniture sliders back then! So, of course, I continue the tradition in my own home! The kids love it, and hubby tolerates it.
Here are just a few tips to keep in mind when moving furniture around:
Allow 2′ for walkways, and try not to force walkways through a conversational space.
Leave 14″ to 18″ between the sofa and the coffee table.
Reserve 2′ behind dining and desk chairs, and allow sufficient space for drawers to be opened.
The conversation zone should be contained within an 8′ diameter.
The distance from the TV to seating should be three times the size of the screen. For example, to watch TV on a 32″ screen comfortably, allow 8′ between the TV and the seating area.
You’d be surprised how just a few tweaks can transform your room! Another perk – if you have kids, they do a better job picking up their rooms when you’ve switched it around (for awhile, at least).
With fall on the horizon, what room in your home might you rearrange and why?
(Oh, one last tip – for indententions left behind by furniture, leave a few ice cubes on them, then fluff the area with a toothbrush!)
1. Hi Susan ,
Love all your great tips and space planning ideas. Your Mom , moving everything around, reminded me of growing up. We moved around alot in the Air Force, and every move, my mom gave me “carte blanche” to decorate the new houses. I’m sure she regretted her decision many times, but it gave me the interest I have in decorating at a young age. Aren’t MOMs great! Sound’s like your mom taught you well, LOL.
Love those plastic moving discs!

2. Hi Cathy,
Yes, I grew up thinking frequent change was normal! Guess this blog is a good support group for folks like us!
And I’m sure your mom was proud of your early design work!

3. Hi susan,
I had to smile, I’m just like your Mom…I love decorating and yes rooms have been “moved” in my house also. When my children were little they used to get so excited about all our changes, In those days when money was tight changing a room felt like everything was new without spending a cent. I’m lucky that I have a husband who loves changes in the house also. Through the years our master bedroom has been in different bedrooms, love it, keeps it all exciting!
