Hmmm, what exactly are the “dog days of summer”? I had to Google it to find out more.

It seems the “dog days of summer” are the most hot and sultry period of summer, usually from mid July to early September. It has something to do with the Greek and Romans thinking that the “dog star” Sirius, and the sun were rising together at the same time of year producing more heat (and I thought they were smarter than that). It must have been interesting enough, to be passed down through the ages I guess.

Anyway, in honor of the “dog days of summer”, I went in search of doggie decor. (Actually I needed a gift for a dog lover). I headed to HomeGoods to see what “jumped” out at me. There was quite a bit to choose from. I saw some great large prints of dignified dogs in period clothing…my favorites (you’d HAVE to buy all 4, so, it was over my gift budget). They were beautifully matted and framed. They measured about 18″x 22″each. (sorry, the frames were cut out.  I wanted to show you the cute dogs up close). Also, there were a few very large signed dog oil paintings and fun prints of dogs.

They had some beautiful dog needlepoint pillows, a full size dog water fountain (see below), dog bookends, large dog statues, a kids dog bookshelf, dog bowls, and lots of other doggone cute things at tail-wagging prices.

(click on the photos to see details)

I decided to get some doggy bookends. Always useful, and a gift I would really like. It’s interesting all of the things you can find when you have an idea in mind. Do you go shopping for gifts with something in mind, or do you just go and see what you’ll find, or, do you buy gifts for people, that you would secretly like to get?  :)    I do all of the above.

Well, the heat is on,  stay cool and Happy Dog Days! Enjoy the rest of the summer, you’ll be wishing for these days when the first snow flies.

1. Hi Cathy,

You might remember me from back in May. My daughter wanted a light blue and brown bedroom. We actually did her room two weeks ago for her birthday. Most of it is done, but we are trying to decide what to do with the plain wall with the desk (I put pictures up in the photo gallery). Above her window it is supposed to say “OC GIRL” because we live in Orange County. She saw this in a model home and loved the idea. We are not completely done, but most of it is finished. Her bed is under the window and to the right of her bed is a small table/nightstand. There is a desk on the other side of the bed (but not on the same wall as the window). Please let me know what you think and any ideas you have. My daughter was wanting to paint different color squares on the blank wall with the desk. Not just random squares, but rows and columns of squares so the whole wall is full. Again, the pictures are in the photo gallery. Please let me know what you think! :)

2. Hello Lindsey,

I do remember you well, thanks for revisiting. I saw all the picture you sent. It looks like you’re coming along beautifully on your daughter’s room. I love the colors and feel you’ve incorporated from your inspiration room. Also the “O C Girl” is a great touch. I think there are a few details you could add if you wish, to finish it off. If you don’t mind me adding to your already great room, I would like to post a main blog on your room. I’ll illustrate some additions into your photo. You can take them or leave them but it might give you some more ideas to complete the look you’ve started. I will post the pictures and new blog on Fri. Sept. 5th. Would you like me to do this for you?

We can discuss those ideas more on the Fri. Blog.
Talk to you soon!

4. Hi again Lindsey,

Great! I’ll post your subject on Fri. and you can take a look and tell me what works for you and what doesn’t. You also may get more ideas from other bloggers as well.
Do you have a clearer picture of your inspiration room? If not that’s fine.

Just remember, comments are not moderated (processed) over the weekend, but you can write in anytime, I will see them but they may not post until Mon.

Talk to you soon,
Cathy

5. I do not have a clearer picture because it was taken by my daughter’s cell phone out of a book. I do know that the book is “Teen Zone” by Judith Wilson. We have only seen it at the two local JoAnn Fabric Stores around here. Thank you for you future advice regarding her room.

8. Dogs and summer…two of my favorite things….
Here in MO, we call it the dog days of summer because….your tongue hangs out and you pant like a dog here in the summer!
Humidity…you know!

9. Julie,
You’re so funny! But right. I’ve been there and that humidity is intense.
At least you can enjoy the dogs and fall is coming to cool you off.
