We’re not all morning people. I’m not sure I even know what a “morning person” is – since I’m not one of them. Nonetheless, we all need to get up and out in the mornings, often with just precious seconds to spare.
Do you ever envy Superman’s ability to spin around in a phone booth and somehow pull on a latex suit with ease in a matter of seconds? Do you think of your bathroom as the pit at a NASCAR race?
You don’t need superhuman abilities or a pit crew posse to make your bathroom perform better for you in the mornings. Here are a few minor updates that can make all the difference in the world and shave precious minutes off your morning prep time:
Placement
Use towel hooks rather than traditional towel bars, and place them close to the shower door
Make sure you have rugs to cover key traffic patterns (use rug pads or rolled duct tape to keep them from moving around)
Add a robe hook to hang your clean outfit for the day (can use over-the-door hooks if wall space is minimal)
Add a hamper for a quick drop of your dirties for laundry day
Storage
Only keep out what you use on a daily basis
Organize make up and hair products in silverware organizers in a drawer
Keep short-term items (used less than daily, but at least once/month) in a handy caddy under the sink
Store longer-term items in a linen closet where they won’t get in the way
Maintainability
Store wipes and extra trash bags under the sink for quick, interim clean up
Keep a second set of towels handy. You can switch them out, and wash the other set when you have time. No place to store them? Roll them up in a pretty basket and make it part of the décor!
Décor
Use bolder colors with high-energy and contrast to keep you motivated and moving
Go minimal on window treatments – get the privacy you need without having to open or close curtains (café panels or wood blinds work well)
Opt for fewer, bolder art pieces rather than a collection of smaller items. Not only does it make the space feel bigger, but you’ll have fewer distractions. How about a large clock that is easy to read from any place in the room AND makes an artistic impression?
Make sure you have good lighting for morning prep activities.
Strategically place mirrors – can you easily see the back of your head? Can you apply make up or tweeze whatever needs tweezed with ease?
Don’t decorate with anything that will need regular dusting (need I say more)?
Add waterproof speakers for your iPod, and create a folder for “morning music” and one for “end of day” to set the tone
What other “tricks” do you have for getting out of the house on time?

1. great ideas….. As Professional Home Stagers, we see challenging baths all the time. Avoiding clutter and all those bottles of bath salts and creams on the counters makes a calmer emvironment to start your day.
Take Susan’s advice and transform your bath this weekend.

2. Hi Kathy,
Great to hear from you! I agree, too much clutter can be a bad thing, whether you’re selling your home or not!

3. My husband brought me to this store and I was buying, buying, as though it was christmas, I could not believe the prices were that reasonable. I bought to redecorate my bathroom and my living room. The fragrance flowers just made my bathroom smell fabulous. I will be shopping there from now on.
The vases, center pieces and wall piece made my living room look like something out of the magazine. I’m so excited about this store.
