Decorating Style I recently took the “What’s your Style DNA?” quiz over at My Deco Design Boutique. It’s a picture quiz and really quite a lot of fun to do. I tried it a few times and it always came out the same. Apparently my style is “Town and Country” which means, in part, that I “want to create a space that’s functional without being utilitarian, with a real sense of being loved and looked after.” I’m amazed, but they’ve pegged me pretty well.

However, it was a personal style quiz I took from the makeover guy that revealed I was a “casual/romantic”.

Christopher Hopkins offers a series of buzz words for each category that can help you describe your personal style. Since I was split 60-40 between casual and romantic, I chose a few buzz words from each. My personal style can be described as follows: I like down-to-earth, practical and comfortable clothes, hair, and makeup that are easy care but that also reflect my femininity and are fresh (current) and enchanting.”

What was so amazing to me was that when I thought about my personal style buzzwords, they described my decorating style as well. I do downplay the “feminine” side just a little in deference to my husband’s tastes, but overall, my buzz words apply as much to my furniture and home decor as they do to my personal fashion style.

Once you have a clear description of your personal style(be it fashion or decorating) it does help you to narrow down your choices. I might be drawn to a minimalist bedroom in a magazine, but I’m not going to be really happy living there permanently. And it’s so much easier to shop for home decor when you have a clear idea of what it is that works for you.

So, how about you? Are your personal style and decorating style the same or different? Why not try one or both of these style quizzes and let us know what’s your personal decorating style.

1. Hi Joan,

Great quiz! I came out as “Retro Chic”, but here’s what I find interesting…my husband is anything BUT “Retro Chic”, so our house doesn’t reflect that - it’s more of a compromise. I wish there were a “couple’s decorating quiz” to help folks reach fair compromise for their joint style! Too fun - thx for sharing!

2. Hi Joan,

This was so much fun! You’re right — the style quizzes were amazingly accurate. I was Swiss Family Robinson. Didn’t love the name but the description — a little bohemian, mix and match — is my home precisely. They need to rename it — Eclectic Traveler or something.

I printed the results and now I want to go shopping!

Thanks for sharing!

3. Susan, Retro-Chic sounds so cool. You bring up a good point that often spouses or roommates have different styles so compromise is needed. I think your husband should take the quiz and then you could compare notes and see what elements you have in common. Hopefully he’ll let you do at least one room (your office, a small bathroom) completely in retro chic so you can share that style with all of us — I’m sure I’m not the only one intrigued by the style.

4. Mary: Yes, I can’t get over how accurate the quiz results are. I agree that they should rename your style and I think “eclectic traveller” is a great alternative. Be sure to share your shopping finds.

7. my home is filled with bits and pieces of home goods. It is my very favorite store anywhere. I go there at least twice a week. I feel like they opened it just for me. I use to travel to Desert Ridge to shop in the sister store but now I have it right near my home I love it

9. I love this quiz. I am an interior designer and a graduate from AIOP. Your quiz defined me as Glamourous Classic, which is very true.

I had my friend do this and you describe her as earthy casual. She did not print out her results. Could you list the different styles and descriptions. I thought this was a lot of fun. Especially since after I do this for other people my own personal tastes get muddled.

10. HI Sheryl: Did you take the quiz at the link in the post above or the HG stylescope quiz? I thought from your answers that you are probably referring to the HG quiz but since you posted your comment on this post I wasn’t sure.
I’m sorry I don’t have a list of all the results — think there are many combinations with both of these quizzes that are based on the pictures selected/answers given. So many variables. But they are sure fun to do, aren’t they? Thanks for participating.
