I’m so excited about the many different decorating styles are represented on this blog! Through our lives, we often adjust (or even completely change) our style either to better suite where we are in life, or as trends change, or perhaps just because the winds changed.
It’s fun for me to work with a client who is looking to adjust their style. This living room, although a wonderful dramatic brick red, was too traditional for the homeowner, who was heading in more of a transitional style. To see more views, click here.
This was not an expensive redesign project. The rug (which served as inspiration for the room) was on sale at CB2, the beautiful table lamps came from HomeGoods, and it only took two coats of paint (believe it or not) to cover the dark red! The paint was Behr Swiss Coffee (a cream color) and the trim was ultra white semi-gloss, which gives just enough definition to pop.
The family photos stayed in the room, but were scaled back a bit. This was to allow for the “one empty drawer” principle, which means that in life (and in our homes) we need to leave at least one empty drawer to allow for new discoveries in our lives. If all our drawers are packed full and our schedules are always overbooked, then there is no room for “new” experiences!
Now the room better balances the rest of the home, and there is space to grow meaningful accessories to the room as discovered.
How has your style changed over the years? And do you have an empty drawer in your home and/or life?
1. That is a beautifully simple room. It brightens it up so much. That is a cute rug too.

2. Hi Amanda G!
Thanks! That rug is one of my favorite finds…with such a simple room, it really needed something with pizzaz to be the focal point. The room just seems to breathe better now.

4. Hi Danielle – Thanks!
It’s a bit more modern than one would expect in a traditional home, but it worked great!
