I just got back from visiting the Montgomeryville, PA HomeGoods store for my second “Designer is In” store event. I had such a wonderful time speaking with local shoppers and answering their decorating questions.
After my presentation I got to help some shoppers find the right accessories for their rooms. Each time the solution seemed to be add pillows to pull the look together:
• Red and gold striped pillows helped one shopper to give her hand me down blue sofa a new look to coordinate with her French Country Décor.
• New paisley and striped pillows helped one shopper give her old sofa a new look for selling her home.
• A blend of brown, red, and gold pillows jazzed up one shopper’s chocolate brown sofa. A zebra pillow completed the look and tied in with the artwork.
• Neutral pillows in subtle tones of gray, taupe and cream transformed a shopper’s black leather sofa and coordinated with her new silk window treatments.
Pillows are one of my design must haves. They are an inexpensive way to give a room a new look that can be changed seasonally or as styles change.
Do you have any must haves in the rooms you design? If so, please share. I will be visiting the Marlton New Jersey store next Saturday September 27th at 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30. I hope to see you there.
1. I think you are right on target with the pillows- they really do help define a look. Another great accessory that can do the same thing is candles.

2. Hi Bettsi,
Thanks for visiting my blog. You are so right about candles- I use them in almost all my home staging projects. They work great in a bedroom to add a little romance, a dining room for ambience, living rooms for a colorful accent.
I have actually become a little obsessed with scented candles- I switch them seasonally- florals like French tulip for Spring and Mandarin orange for Summer, cinnamon and vanilla for Fall and pine or nutmeg for Winter.
How do you use candles in your design projects?
