I think so. I don’t have any quantitative support to that claim, but I know I do better work when I’m in an organized, functional and in an expressive setting. The way I see it, it sure can’t hurt!

My neighbor has allocated a corner of her living room to a kids study center. She has three darling boys (and, if I may add, they are very smart kids!). I love this study center because it is functional, stylish, AND personal.

She has graciously allowed me to share her clever corner with you (click picture to enlarge).First, let’s look at the functionality:

  • The floating shelf above the desk keeps papers off the work space. Each kid has a basket for his current projects.
  • The peg board keeps the multitudes of supplies within reach, but again, not on the work space.
  • The grease board calendars are color coded, and also magnetized to keep track of things like library notes, etc.
  • Now, let’s talk style!

  • I just love the large framed collage of the kids work! It’s colorful, easy, cost-effective, and most importantly, a wonderful personal touch!
  • The authentic classroom chairs are the perfect size and style for this space.
  • Now, how can we apply these ideas to our “grown up” home offices?

I personally need to find more ways to move “stuff” off my work space. I’m also thinking of adding a sign that says “Your Mother Doesn’t Work Here” to remind me to pick up more often.

How have you made your kids’ (or your) study area work better?

Could you apply these ideas to a kitchen nook or mud room area?

    1. This is a great plan. You know- I might even make that collage board a corkboard. That way you can put current art up (so that we have something to display all of those thousands of pieces of work they bring home weekly) or as they get older you could post the “Well Done” kudos tests and projects for encouragement.

    2. Hi Danielle,

Ahhh, great idea to make the art display 3D and multi-functional! I’m always amazed at how many things they bring home from school. I’ve seen one Mom tape them up along the basement staircase – the whole area was practically wall-papered!

    3. why is it that you don’t have an online catalog?

    4. Hi Clarence,

Because each of our stores receives over 10,000 new items each week, it would be impossible for us to offer a catalog to our customers.

    We appreciate your inquiry.

    Sincerely,

    Jessica

    5. I personally can only speak for myself, but I work better in an environment that is well lit, organized and clean. The less chaos the better. Functionable with as much as can be possible within reach (pencils, pens, stapler, staples, paper clips, computer, printer, good lighting, stamps, envelopes, etc. ) Nothing gets me more frustrated then to sit for a few hours doing some tye of assignment, and then when I know I need to finalize it, realizing that I do not have the necessary supplies to complete a particular project or assignment, smile.

Thanks for an opportunity to comment.

    6. Hi Phyllis – thanks for commenting! I agree…it’s difficult to keep focused on the task at hand when looking for supplies!
