Do you change things up around your home for each season? It doesn’t take as much effort (or cash) as you might think. Just a few simple changes and the entire feel of a room can go from summer to fall, and without breaking the bank.

Here is my kitchen hutch (a thrifted find!) for everyday. (You can click on the photos to see them enlarged) You can see a small portion of this hutch as you stand in my entryway, so I like it to reflect the seasons and welcome my guests as they enter my cottage. By adding a few pumpkins, some petite tureens (from you-know-where) and changing the ribbons on my little mugs, it’s all about fall now.
Speaking of the darling little covered soup bowls, remember, they don’t have to stay in the kitchen. Gosh no. I have another one on the hutch in my living room and it looks fabulous there as well.
The great thing about using things like seasonal serving pieces in places other than the table, is that you get more value from them. You get to enjoy them all season, not just on Thanksgiving, or when company comes over. When you walk into a room, you’ll get that warm-and-fuzzy-I’m-so-glad-to-be-here feeling, and that’s what home should be all about. It should be our haven from the ridiculously stressful world out there.
I like to think of this as “seasonal nesting”. Mmm hmm. And here’s my idea of how to spend a perfect Saturday… My chocolate brown comfy velour warm ups, some Norah Jones or Jack Johnson on the ipod docking station, the cinnamon and nutmeg scent of a pumpkin spice candle or two (or five…) wafting through the cottage as I bring out the fall decorations, dusting and fluffing things as I go from room to room.
*sigh* I’m in autumnal heaven, I tell you.
1. Tracy you are such an inspiration to me both in your decorating ideas and your photography! Have to tell you too that you have inspired me to find my local TJ Maxx and I’ll be there again today…first thing…before all the pumpkin tureens are gone!

2. I love to bring out the Autumn/Fall decorations! We don’t see an actual seasonal change where we live so the interior decorations really make a difference. I love the way you have just added a few delicious pieces and created a delightful feel to the room. I am super inspired to get out our stuff a few days early (usually do this on Oct 1!) and get started celelbrating Autumn!!!

3. This make me want to run out and get some cider just to have simmering on the stove! I thought I had my place ready for autumn, but now I’m inspired to do more!

4. You’re absolutely right. Why only use your beautiful things for one meal when you can enjoy them for a couple of months instead. Love the post. Mimi

5. I love the contrast of the orange pumpkins against the black hutch.

6. Tracey,
You’ve inspired me to get out my decorations and to make a little trip to Home Goods as well. I love their seasonal goodies. Such a fun store!
I enjoy repurposing items like tureens to use for flowers. I am always on the hunt for containers to hold arrangements for centerpieces, and I love reading your blog and this one to be challenged to think outside the box.
Thank you for sharing your ideas with us.
