Have you ever noticed how simple projects can quickly mushroom out of control? Especially home improvement projects.
It all started, earlier this summer, when my husband decided we would not go on a vacation, but, do a few things around the house that needed to be done. The biggest one was, to install a new energy efficient heating /air conditioning system. Our old one was 30 years old and was in bad shape. All went well, until we thought…
to get the most efficiency out of the unit, we needed to replace our old single -paned leaky windows and patio doors. So, reluctantly we did that… (cha ching).
While that was in progress, much of the outside wood trim had to be replaced around some new windows and a patio cover removed, because of termite damage. So now, not only the termite damage had to be repaired but the house fumigated as well. …(cha cha ching).
So now, all of the new and old trim had to be primed and painted. Since we had to do this, we should probably paint the rest of the house, for not that much more, right? We did that… (cha cha cha ching).
Ahhh, finally to the end…no way! I found a large wet spot in my hallway carpet. It wouldn’t dry, so I tore up the carpet to find wet subfloor going into 3 rooms. The new air conditioner cooling coil in the attic had been leaking for 2 months down inside the wall and under the carpet. Grrrrrrr!! So, now we (they, reverse cha ching) are replacing the carpet in the upstairs. Will it ever end!
I’m hoping that’s the extent of the menacing, mushrooming, mountain of maintenance for one year. We still have to put on a new roof and garage door, but… that will be my “vacation” for next year…unless the roof leaks before then!
Moral of the story…Go on vacation, it’s a lot cheaper and much more fun than staying at home!
Can you relate? Any homeowner horror stories out there? They say talking is good therapy, thanks for listening, I feel better already!
1. That’s how it always happens…..
You buy a new couch and the then the carpet looks tattered…
the walls need work and it goes on and on…
Your results are wonderful….
but getting there is a nightmare….must be why we put things off for so long and of course the cha-ching!
Enjoy the changes…usually you are glad you do it after its been awhile and you forget the horrors!

2. Hi Cathy,
Not much of a vacation…but your home is looking (and working) great! Hopefully with your forthcoming utility savings you can take a triple-cha ching vacation next summer!
I made the “mistake” of painting - now we’re getting new carpet and some new wood flooring. Better stop before I look too closely at my furniture sitting on the new flooring…

3. Hi Julie,
Thanks for commiserating. Yes, it’s hard to have so much come up at one time, but you’re so happy when it all gets finished, you forget about how bad it was…kinda like childbirth…LOL.
No big projects for a while, I hope. I don’t want to open up another “can of worms” or termites!
Thanks for “feeling my pain”.

4. Hi Susan,
No, I’ve had better “vacations”. We’ll see what next year bings…after the roof…I could always go down to the beach here and pretend I’m in Hawaii…LOL. Problem is, then I have to return every night to the Money-Pit. Oh well, That’s what owning a home is all about.
Sounds like you’re doing some nice things at your house. Enjoy, but watch out for the “mushroom effect.”
Good to talk with you.

5. I once tried to pull up the carpet and ended up knocking down my entire house and rebuilding …. now that was an expensive home improvement project. I had toxic mold throughout. Thanks for your story.

6. Hi Linda,
I guess I shouldn’t complain after hearing what you had to do…now that’s a horror story! Yes, mold is something you don’t want to mess with. Sorry you had to go through all that.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
