The holiday season is fast approaching. Are you ready for your overnight guests? Now is the time to spruce up that extra bedroom. Have your ever stayed at a Bed & Breakfast? It is easy to recreate that feeling for your guest.
Take a stroll through your local home decorating store. Keep you eye open for thoughful touches you can add to your guest room such as scented, padded hangers, fluffy robes and thick bath towels. Are your sheets old and worn? Now is the time to buy a new set of sheets. Look for a high thread count and Egyptian cotton, for softness. Make sure your guests have a reading lamp and cozy chair for relaxing. Think about adding some stationery, local post cards and postage stamps. Clean out space in the closet for your guests. Mix old and new linens, provide extra quilts at the foot of the bed for those chilly nights.
Provide a basket of shampoos, soaps and lotions. Some other welcoming items are an alarm clock, mirror, night light, current magazines and a couple of paper back books (encourage your guests to take the magazines and books home to finish them). A vase of fresh flowers on the dresser and bath vanity will let your guest know they are special. A map of the area and brochures of local attractions are great, if your guests will be exploring on their own.
Finally, spend a night in your own guest room. Is the lighting practical, the mattress comfortable? Is the furniture arrangement easy to move around? Getting your guest bedroom set up now will let you enjoy your guests when the holidays arrive.

2. Yes, I will my my elderly parents here for Thanksgiving and then my youngest son will be home for Christmas. I have the guest room set up nice and cozy for my parents, with lots of extra quilts and a comfy chair. My son’s requirements will be less about style and comfort and more about Mom’s traditional Holiday foods.

10. Hi Penny,
I had to laugh, because I spent last night in our guest room w/a sick-ish 3 yr old. It was very comfortable until she turned perpendicular and kicked me out of bed. LOL

15. Hi Penny,
Who says the guest room has to be a dedicated bedrm? It could be a fold-out couch. Night stands with small lamps are appreciated, for the late night readers like me. They could be tray tables, or file drawers or a stack of crates . A few empty drawers of a dresser are most welcome as are empty closet areas. Then a place to stash that suitcase.(under the bed?)
Empty dresser tops and a nice tray or dish,to hiold change, jewelry, eyeglasses, keys etc. A nightlight (I always travel with one) . Accessible outlets or extension cords,, a hairdryer. This way your guests won’t feel awkward asking to borrow things.Bottles of water and disposable cups. A wastebasket and a new package of disposable earplugs, in case the rest of the houshold isn’t ready to gear down yet. An alarm clock/radio. Top it off with a basket of goodies from your favorite hotels …shampoo, soaps etc. to take with them, otherwise you’ll never get rid of the stuff!

16. I am trying to create a bedroom right now, and actually love the bedding shown on the HG website in the Bedding department section:
http://www.homegoods.com/beds.asp
(It’s the bottom right pic incorporating blues, browns, whites). Do you know what brand that bedding is, and where I could find it! Thanks for any help as I try to create that beautiful bedroom

17. I recently moved into a small 2 bedroom apartment. One bedroom is my boyfriend and my room and the other is a guest/office/book shelf room. Any advice for how to make this room warm, enjoyable but not completely cramped like it is right now? I am on a budget and am not quite sure how to handle this room. My sister is coming up soon with her husband and 5 month old, and I want the room to be welcoming as well. Any advice?
