Canadian Thanksgiving
My husband and I traveled to Ontario this past week with our dog, Duke, to join our families for Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. I wanted to share this holiday tradition with you.

Did you know that the first recorded Canadian Thanksgiving feasts took place among explorers and natives in 1578? But it wasn’t until 1957 that the current tradition came into effect. At that time, Canadian Parliament proclaimed “A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed…to be observed on the 2nd Monday in October.” Although Monday is the “official” holiday, Canadians eat their Thanksgiving meal on any day of the three day weekend.

My sister hosted 20 of our family and close friends on Saturday. The main menu had all our favorites: Turkey, spiral ham, squash, potatoes, stuffing and gravy, creamed corn, salads, cranberries and more. Desserts included pumpkin pie, pumpkin cheesecake and cupcakes. We are now heading back to Boston stuffed and thankful.

Hope you enjoy these pictures and a very Happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian blog readers (and HomeSense shoppers).

2. Wow Joan,

You get to have Thanksgiving twice! The best of both worlds. How wonderful to see your family and enjoy the beautiful area up there in Canada. Your pictures tell a great story and the yummy food makes my mouth water. Not too long and we’ll be doing the same here. Thanks for sharing a preview.

4. Yes, Cathy, it was wonderful to be home for the holiday — and we are spoiled since we can celebrate American Thanksgiving next month too. Boy, by the time I eat the Christmas turkey I’ll be growing feathers. LOL. Glad you enjoyed the post.
