In our neighborhood we have a tradition of handing out Boo Bags. It’s possible that you aren’t familiar with this concept. I know I was unprepared for it when we moved to this area 5 years ago and we found ourselves on the receiving end of a Boo’ing. The idea is to fill a container with Halloween treats and to take it to an unsuspecting neighbor, put it on their doorstep, ring the doorbell and run like the wind, Bullseye. We had only been in our new home for a week when it happened to us and we were so delighted, that we have carried on the tradition every year since.

The contents of the bag can be anything Halloween related. This year we skipped the candy and put in toys, pencils and bagged snacks. To keep costs down we embellished a plain brown lunch sack with things we had lying around and enclosed directions on how to continue the tradition as well as a copy of a ghost to put on their front door so other people will know they’ve already been “hit”. You may  want to make a secret phone call to the parents of the homes you hit to tell them it came from you so they’ll be more comfortable letting their children enjoy the treats. It’s a fun tradition to start in your neighborhood and one that you could alter for other holidays as well.

1. Jen, what a cute idea — you must have delightful neighbors. My imagination started to run — getting “egged” at Easter with a little basket of chocolate eggs or having a stocking hung on your door at Christmas ….I love random acts of kindness. It’s great your children are getting to experience a caring community — joan
