Autumn entertainingA great place to ignite inspiration for table decorating is to look to the things you’ve collected from your travels. Look in your home at the many beautiful pieces you’ve acquired. Things you never thought would go together could actually create a beautiful and unique table arrangement.

My sister-in-law always sets a beautiful table. She’s collected many nice pieces from her travels. Some were expensive, many were not, but she combines them in a way that’s always beautiful and interesting.  At a recent gathering her table did not disappoint. So, I asked if I could show you some of her ideas.

This table is a mix of many styles and cultures but it all works beautifully together. Here’s what I observed and noted…

  • elegant entertainingThe colors of blue and orange are a direct, harmonious, complementary color scheme and is the tieing factor of the arrangement.
  • The small print, country French tablecloth is the anchor of the display.
  • In stark contrast, a beautiful orange patchwork Japanese obi is the runner down the center of the table and provides the accent of color.
  • The dishes are blue and white English transferware, and blend with any traditional setting.
  • Each place setting has a tiny Chinese vase with orange mums, rice bowl, cut Czech crystal stemware, silver flatware, and laquered chopsticks for the delicious Japanese meal.
  • The centerpiece is an Asian footed compote holding traditional American pumpkins and gourds.
  • 2 carved and painted Balinese candlesticks add height and interest to the mix.
  • Also, a painted Japanese doll and a cozy-wrapped teapot add yet another dimension.

Asian Inspired decor

The tablescape was an exciting and interesting statement that reflected her tastes and style. The dinner was just as delicious as the decor, and as I wandered through the rest of her home I snapped a few more vignettes of her artistic Asian inspired style.

I hope you will look at your “stuff” in a new way, and find ways to incorporate your many treasures into designs for your home that have great meaning to you and your guests. You’ll  be surprised at what you have hidden away waiting to be rediscovered and arranged in a new way.

4. Hello Julie,

Yes, she has a lovely home. They collect the most beautiful things from their travels. She changes her things around alot. So, when I visit I always see new (to me) things, arranged in a different way. Maybe I’m just too nosy, but I notice things like that. Anyway, it’s always fun to go visit.
Thanks for your nice comment.
