This post could also be called “Nesting 101″. When the weather turns colder and the days grown shorter I think it is our natural instinct to nest. The same light and airy decorating style we used in the summer is just not working now. Most of us can’t afford the time or the money to totally redecorate every season, but there are a few inexpensive simple things we can do to add warmth to our homes.
Place cozy quilted or luxurius knitted throws on a couch or chair. Then you will have something warm to wrap up in while sipping your hot cocoa on a snowy evening. Add extra throw pillows in warm colors with soft down fillings to snuggle into. If you have bare floors consider adding a wool area rug to the floors to keep your feet warm. Floor to ceiling drapes that cover plain window blinds actually help stop drafts from creeping into the room. And last but not least, add lots of candles in the scents of the season, like cinnamon, pumpkin, and fir.
1. Hi Penny -
Great post! This is exactly what I’ve been doing. You are right – the change in weather (and light and dark) seems to call us to make changes inside our homes.

2. Just hauled out the throws this morning. They’re in the laundry with some very nice lavender/vanilla fabric softener. I will love snuggling in them this evening. Thanks for all the great tips!

4. I always burn more candles once the days get shorter! Makes the house look so much warmer. I need to get a quilt to put on the back of my sofa, too! Great ideas!

11. Ummm, this all sounds so cozy and warm. I love nesting and especially in the colder months of winter. I love using all the warm quilts and throws, the hot cocoa, the big, roaring fire and, as you said, using those great smelling candles. I love it all. Thanks so much…

13. Hi Penny!
Wonderful ideas! Since we are indoors more I love to put a nice pile of books and maga zines on the coffee table to browse through, and I also put little electric cnadles in my windows to brighten the long nights.

15. Great post, Penny. I’m getting ready to leave for work, but I would much rather snuggle in with a cup of coffee and a good book. I love candles year-round, but there is just something extra special about the during winter months.

17. Wonderful ideas, Penny! I’ve been wanting to make throw pillows for my sofa for over 5 years! Maybe this winter I’ll finally get around to them. Or I could just visit your beautiful cosy home!
