I do know that decorating blogs this month tend to be about holiday decorating and not actual home re-decorating. In fact, I probably should have saved this post for AFTER Christmas, but I’m so excited about the re-decorating we’ve been doing in our living room/dining room the past few weeks that I just had to share. Sorry for the interruption in tree trimming and gift giving ideas, but surely I’m not the only person out there who decided to re-decorate a room right in the midst of the holiday season, am I?

It all started with a leak we had in the wall last spring which finally got repaired late this fall by our condo corporation. They re-pointed the brick outside but there was no saving the interior dining room drywall so down it came and up went a new sheet of drywall which meant that we had to have the wall repainted. And that’s how it all began BECAUSE….

The dining room and the living room flow together as one big room, so the need to repaint the dining room wall was the ideal opportunity to just do the whole room in a new color. And that, my friends, is how I got my husband to agree to start redecorating the living room during the holiday season.

I have never, quite truthfully, been happy with the wall color in here. It was a lovely shade of gray that matched the accent wall of cinnamon slate quite nicely (or so everyone said) but it doesn’t change the fact that I don’t really like gray or maybe more to the point that I don’t think the gray liked this room. It always felt just a little out of place like that odd person at your Christmas party who, no matter how hard you try, doesn’t quite blend in.

On the other hand, I loved the cinnamon slate accent wall so whenever I thought about changing the wall color in the living room I could never decide what I would put in its place. Then it dawned on me that I could use Cathy’s infamous color tip and keep the accent wall as is and just go up the paint chip a few colors to a lighter shade. The new color (Benjamin Moore porcelain) is very similar to the old gray but now the undertone is “a perfect blend.” So, we repainted and it is so much brighter and warmer. Then on Black Friday we went rug shopping BECAUSE….

My husband has never really liked our white rug all that much — too hard to keep clean. And now with the paint changed it seemed like the rug was just begging us to go. Seriously, after the painters left I’m sure I heard it pleading, ” I need to go!”

In preparation for this very moment, I had been surveying a few hundred friends for area rug ideas and all my decorator buddies said to try to get a rug with ALL the colors of the room in it.

(Tip: If you are planning to redecorate a room anytime soon, can I suggest you pick the rug first and pull your colors from it? Way easier).

Anyway, we just happened upon this wonderful Pak-Persian rug that had all our colors in it plus some and features a “tree of life” motif that we both really like. Call it “art you can walk on”. We got it laid out nicely in the living room and then we went shopping for chairs BECAUSE….

Our guests don’t really like to sit in our love seat. It’s supposed to provide seating for two but it’s a bit crowded so usually only one person sits there. Since it takes up too much space for seating for one, it’s being replaced. Besides, I don’t think it looks all that great with the rug.

The new chairs are on order so you’ll have to stay tuned to see the finished room in the New year, but you know that once those chairs arrive I’ll be on the hunt for a new lamp and some throw cushions and maybe some new artwork BECAUSE….

p.s. Anyone else doing a little non-holiday decorating over the holidays?

LOVE IT Do you LOVE IT?

1. I have been redecorating as recovery from a major pipebreak flood a couple of months ago. The entire downstairs (everything but the kids’ rooms) was, essentially, destroyed.I have repainted, bought new furniture, bought a rug that matches it all (yep – totally agree about starting with the rug first! That would have made things much easier!) and have finally gotten done. In fact, I’m so thrilled with the final outcome that I am extremely reluctant to drag out all the Christmas decorations and redecorate with them! My kids are very disappointed so I will most likely be forced to get all of that stuff out and get busy this week. But I sure do understand your feellings about redecorating during the Holiday Season!!!

2. your room looks great…. we just put new floors in our bedroom, master bath and walk in closet… the best thing about it was that it forced me to take everything out of the closet and I’m not filling it up again! I don’t have curtains yet for the windows so I haven’t taken photos yet, but soon I’ll be posting the before and after.

3. Hi Joan,

I absolutely love everything you’ve done here so far. That wall color is a big improvement. That new color has “character” and so fresh. Love it.

The area rug is truly art underfoot. Treat it well, it’s timeless. (your dog is sooo adorable, he likes the rug too)!

Well my friend, you’ve got quite a showpiece here. It’s coming along beautifully…very classy. I bet you’re enjoying it so much.

Thanks so much for a peek inside, looking forward to seeing more!

Well Done!

4. Katherine: So sorry to hear about your leak but a nice excuse to redecorate for sure. And I’m SO GLAD to hear I’m not the only one who forgot to buy the rug first. LOL. Would love to see your room so send a photo if you can,

7. Hi Joan,

CUTE poochie!

I’m so impressed you found the time to do this during the holidays! The only thing I’ve done this month is order new curtains for my second grader’s room…the girls played “make up” and the 3 yr old wiped it off on her curtains when she was done. They were ugly curtains anyway. ;)

8. Thanks Susan, but it probably helps that I don’t have young children like you do!! Enjoy the new curtains.

9. I think this is a great time to change things around the house. I painted my living room and dining room two Christmases ago and I plan on doing that again this year. Because of the Holidays, I don’t have to work so that gives me plenty of time to paint! I love your paint color…do you remember the name of the color and who makes it?

10. Please tell me where you bought your leather chair from. LOVE IT!!!

by Michelle — 12/17/08 at 12:04 pm #

11. Hi Christin: The accent wall color is Benjamin moore’s cinnamon slate #2113-40 and the rest of the room is painted in Benjamin Moore’s Porcelein #2113-60

Both colors look quite a bit different depending on the lighting in your room so you may want to do a test first to make sure it gives the look you want in your space. But we really do love the colors.

12. Hi Michelle:
Yes, we love this chair too. It was made by Metropia but unfortunately they discontinued it (much to our dismay). We have found the almost identical chair (just the nailhead finish is a little different) from Stickley Furniture called the “chino chair” so that’s where we have purchased a second one to match with the same color leather. Regrettably a little more expensive than the Metropia version, but essentially the exact same chair.

15. Where did she buy the rug? I would love one just like it.

by Phyllis — 4/22/09 at 11:37 am #

16. Hi Phyllis:
This is a hand knotted rug so, one of a kind in a sense but you may be able to find something similar at Dover Rugs.
