Are you one of those brave souls who grabbed your wallet and armed yourself with courage and determination to get the best deals on Black Friday? Will you be up early on Friday, prepared to get out there to make any necessary returns and look for after holiday markdowns?
I learned under the tutelage of my mom that it is possible to have a beautiful home, and entertain with style on a budget. One of her secrets besides being very artistically talented, was to find amazing bargains. I am quite certain she is the person who trained me to be an avid “treasure hunter.”
So, I am here to remind you to take advantage of those after-Christmas bargains. I like to give Christmas decorations and ornaments as gifts, and the days following the holiday are the perfect time for me to begin shopping for next year. You can also stock up on wrapping paper, tags, and bows.
Stores that have added extra stock in anticipation of holiday sales will use the coming weeks to lower prices so that they can move merchandise in preparation for Spring. I use the sales to think about items for my home that will add comfort and beauty as those of us in the colder climates continue to nest for the next few months. I shop sales to purchase candles (it is impossible to have too many candles), frames, throws, etc.
And of course don’t forget the children as you shop. I have friends who will get a head start on future birthday and holiday gifts by shopping the sales. Remember the frustration of trying to find a last minute birthday party gift? When my children were still at home, I loved having a stash of gifts from which I would allow the party-goer to choose. I always kept journals, frames, and toys that I knew were popular at the time.
Please add your ideas of ways to use sales to be prepared and manage your budget. When it comes to our families and homes the list is endless.
Before you head out with your bargain hunter hats on; I want to take this opportunity to wish each of you a blessed holiday celebration. May your time spent with family and friends bring you much joy, and may your New Year be filled with happiness.
1. Ahhh, you’ve got me drooling with cost-savings anticipation! Although I’m not an early morning shopper, I do hope to stock up on some timeless holiday essentials for 2009.
And I’d like to wish you a blessed holiday celebraton as well!

2. I may head out, but what I want at Marshalls won’t be on sell in the accent furniture department. I want two of the chairs with the red material with birds and a tea table.
Oh well they say they don’t know when will go on sale. So heart is broken. I will keep shopping craigslist.

3. Hi Deb: I have to say that I am so envious that you have a Home Goods (HG) close to you. When I lived in Fort Myers, FL we had a HG located right across the street. I still use the leather occasional chair, leather ottoman, suede pillows, lamps and all the other various items I purchased at that store. We live in North Austin, Texas now. All the HG stores are close to Houston, I hope that the HG execs realize there are many people who live in the state capital; especially the CA transplants who can finally afford a larger house (which needs to be furnished). We NEED a HG store close to Austin. Oh well, maybe someday. I won’t drive to San Antonio as suggested by the store locate software, that’s over 100 miles away! So enjoy your great finds, I so enjoy reading about them.

Felicia, I am sorry you don’t have a store in Austin. Thanks for your comment, it is always good to let folks know that you miss your regular HG outings.
Carolyn, do keep checking back at your local Marshall’s you never know what you will find. I hope to hear one of these days soon that you were successful in purchasing the red chairs.
Let me know of any sale success stories the rest of you have had.
