You see this beautifully organized linen closet? Looks just like what you’d expect of a Professional Organizer doesn’t it? If you are thinking it looks sort of “Martha Steward-ish”, well that’s because it is. I can only dream of having such a glorious linen closet one day (hey, we organizers like to dream big), but in my real life I don’t even possess the linen closet never mind the beautifully color-co-ordinated and organized linens to go in it.
If you’re one of the lucky ones that has a linen closet (just for linens), but it looks a lot more crowded and cluttered than this one, you need to head over to a Boston-area HomeGoods this month.
And don’t go alone — oh no — take along those gorgeous peach towels your mother-in-law gave you which you’ve never used in your burgundy bathroom. Don’t forget the perfectly good set of double sheets that you picked up before you switched to a queen bed, and the fuschia comforter that went so beautifully with the wallpaper in your last house. Yup, Jan. 11-25th you can donate all your gently used linens to a Boston-area Homegoods to help them help the homeless.
Even if you don’t have a proper linen cupboard and you don’t live in Boston, this is a good time to go through all your towels, bedding, linens and remove those items that you no longer use. Gently used items can be donated to local homeless shelters or thrift stores and damaged bedding and towels (those faded or torn or stained) are often welcomed by animal shelters.
I can see you all now, staggering into the store somewhere under that pile of linen and feeling so good about how you are giving to others in need during these tough economic times and feeling good, too, about finally clearing out that linen closet.
Hold on to those thoughts. I’ll be back next week with some tips for organizing that closet once you’ve removed all the linens you don’t want or need.
In the meantime, let’s have some fun. Please share with the rest of us what you found hiding in your linen closet or send a photo of your donate pile.

3. Hi Joan,
What a wonderful idea to donate those linens. They should do that nation wide sometime.
Great ideas on linen organization. I wished my closet looked like that
Good going!

4. I agree Cathy — this would be a great nationwide program for HomeGoods. I’m thrilled we are leading the way here in Boston.
Always good to have something to aspire to personally as well so lets both keep working on those linen cupboards,

6. Hi Brenda: thanks for your kind words. Can you be a bit more specific about what you’d like to do in your kitchen and livingroom. Purple is a great color and can be paired with black for dramatic effect or soft green for a more muted look etc. Are you thinking of paint or just adding accessories?
You might also want to sign up for the preferred shopper program at http://www.homegoods.com and you can “Ask the Expert” Cathy for more personalized decorating advice than we can offer her on the blog. But if you have a specific idea you want help with feel free to send a comment back here and I’ll do my best to help.
p.s. welcome to Boston — it’s a bit cold these days but hang in there, spring is coming!

7. I don’t live in Boston, but I did donate unused linens to a friend, and some to my local good will! Some old sheets not worth giving I use as drop cloths for my decorative painting projects! Anyway, my linen closet looks like a mess because I lack the ability to fold sheets in a nice, neat package, but I have plenty of baskets and such, so I can hide my messes! I used to do that, years ago, but I guess I got a little lazy! Thanks for the motivation!

8. Hurrah for you Wendy and I’m sure the recipients of your unused linens are very grateful. Baskets are a great idea for keeping things in order. Have fun with it by adding some decorative labels to your baskets or adding in some nice scent. There’s something really nice about not being afraid to open the linen cupboard. Send us a picture when you are done.
