Raise your hand if you enjoy doing laundry!  Hmmm, just as I suspected!  Looks like I’m in good company.  Might as well make the most of it – how about adding a littler flair?

We have upstairs laundry.  Not a laundry ROOM, but a laundry CLOSET that I get to walk by many times per day.

First, a functional note…I keep one central laundry basket in the hall (with three sorting compartments).  Why air my dirties, you ask?  First, the hamper won’t fit in the closet; secondly, I know when I need to toss in a load!

Now, for the inspiration!

I added vinyl lettering over the closet “Laundry is like life…loads of fun” as an attempt at improving my attitude towards laundry.  (a.k.a. propaganda!)

Then I simply updated the switch plate to a playful, retro “Drop your pants here” quote.

Finally, I updated the knobs with hand-painted laundry lines pulls.

It’s not much, and it was very inexpensive, but it makes me smile a bit when I do laundry, which is worth a lot to me!  Especially since I have to walk through my laundry “space” every time I enter my bedroom!

Do you have a blah area of your home that needs some flair?

Note: if you have laundry in the basement, check out this article I wrote last year…loads of ideas!  (sorry for the pun)!

LOVE IT Do you LOVE IT?

4. Thanks Joan!

The funny thing about all this, is that it took my hubby about a week to notice my new flair! LOL

5. I have to say that although I am looking forward to a lot of things in our upcoming home addition, I am REALLY looking forward to having our laundry upstairs. When we lived in our apartment, I was happy to have it in the building (no schlepping to the laundrymat). When we moved to our house, I was happy to have the laundry in our own space. Now I am REALLY excited not to haul laundry for a family of 3 (soon to be 4), up and down 2 flights of stairs.

I love these ideas and plan to make our little upstairs laundry room a colorful and fun place since I’ll be spending more time in there than anyone else ! Another good thing to consider if you do have a laundry room is to maximize any storage opportunities in there. Things like out-of-season linens (Christmas towels, flannel sheets, etc.) can easily be stored in stock cabinetry available from big box home improvement stores. You can also store cleaning supplies on high shelves or cabinets (away from little hands). I plan to also keep extra toiletries and bulk packages of toilet paper in our new laundry room.

6. Hi Melissa,

I totally dig your blog! You MUST have a great sense of humor to take all that on! Funny how our requirements get fine-tuned as we “grow up”, huh? And very smart to add storage space as well! Be sure to take before and after pics and share them w/us.

But here’s something you may not have thought about…now you’ll actually have to exercise! LOL

room above the closet.

10. Hi Stephanie – thanks! It’s a great project to add to your list, because it can be done very quickly! Have fun with it!

Theresa – you can get custom vinyl lettering from wallwords.com or uppercaseliving.com. I actually got this particular one from eBay, however. ;)
