Decorating with flowers is a inexpensive way to add beauty and freshness to your home. No matter your decorating style, you can brighten your home by creating floral arrangements and placing them about your home. I purchase my flowers at the local grocery store once a week. I personally like to buy a large bunch of flowers that are all the same. They could be all roses, all daisies, all sunflowers etc. Then when I get home from the store, I take that one bunch of flowers are create several different floral arrangements and place then through out the house. This week I pick up these pretty red flowers. I used a trio of canning jars for my first arrangment. I cut the flowers down to a pleasing size, placed them in the canning jars and filled with water. For a whimsical touch, I tied black checked ribbon around the jars. I love how this arrangement looks on my kitchen table. It brings out the colors of the china and bench cushions. (Click on the pictures to enlarge for detail)

With the rest of the flowers I trimmed them, put them in a vintage enamel pitcher and placed them on the edge of my tub in the master bath. I like the country look this arrangement creates, with the enamel pitcher and the painted chippy candlesticks. By choosing different styles of flowers and vases you can match any type of decor. Here are some great ideas:

Traditional
Choose full-petalled flowers, such as roses, chrysanthemums, or lilies and accent with baby’s breath Arrange flowers loosely with a few stems of greenery in a glass or crystal vase.

Country
Try a watering can, basket, terra cotta pot, canning jars or small bucket, and fill it with tulips, gerbera daisies, sun flowers or dahlias for a fresh from the garden feel.

Contemporary
Choose flowers that make a bold statement with a single bloom, such as calla lilies, birds of paradise, or orchids. Your vase should be equally simple, yet bold.

Romantic
Create a dramatic arrangement with full, soft flowers, such as peonies, roses, and gardenias. Use draping greenery, such as ivy, and arrange flowers closely in a crystal vase or Grecian urn.

1. Oh, Penny, I just love fresh flowers and don’t indulge myself as often as I’d like. But I had just finished reading your post when there was a knock on the door. I opened it up and there was my hubby with a bouquet of purple tulips he’d picked up for me at the grocery store. And he hadn’t even read your post, imagine!! You got a love a man who thinks of flowers for his wife “just because” on a frigid winter’s day. Who says money can’t buy a little happiness ( :

4. Penny, I love flowers in my home. I can hardly wait for spring, but for now I am satisfying my flower needs with my trips to Sam’s Club. They have great buys on flowers.

5. Thanks for the inspiration, Penny! I love fresh flowers and cut them from my garden spring through fall but I never treat myself to flowers in the winter! I’m adding them to my next grocery list.

6. Penny,
Great ideas for spreading cheer throughout any decor style of home. One of my favorite things is to have one flower at each place setting. A friend of mine gave me several tiny clear glass restaurant creamers that are perfect for this purpose. I also enjoy floating them in a clear glass bowl, sometimes I place colored glass marbles in the bottom and for an added touch of whimsy our gold fish swims beneath the floating blossoms! Thanks for sharing the great ideas.
