One of my favorite magazines is Real Simple. Today’s idea comes for an article I read in a recent issue. I’m sure like many of you, we are trying to trim the excess out of our budget this year; however, that doesn’t mean that we can’t enjoy a beautiful home where we have fun and celebrate.
The article, Decorating on the Cheap with Everyday Items, has ten tips that can be used at any time of the year. I was excited that I had tried a couple of them already. I love to use wine glasses as candle holders, but adding colored sand or pebbles is a great idea. I have used dish towels as placemats, and added ribbon to a plain white lampshade as well. I was thrilled to find tip number four and give it a try. I have been looking for a small tray, and this was perfect. I am especially pleased with the results, because the tray, napkins, and towels came to less than ten dollars total.
I found the frame in the sale aisle. I was planning on using a piece of leftover wallpaper to match my kitchen, but then deicded that it would be fun to change the look to go with the holidays. This is one of last year’s Valentine’s Day cards decorated with some of my scrapbooking supplies. The look can easily be changed for Easter, the Fourth of July, Halloween, Christmas, etc.
Another inexpensive way I decorate for the holidays is to use seasonal candy. For Valentine’s Day I use conversation hearts – see the candle in the above photo. Later in February I will change them out for jelly beans and in the Fall I’ll use candy corn.
As you read through the Real Simple ideas, let us know the ones you have tried in the past or those you plan to try in the future. And by all means, please let us know those everyday items you have repurposed in your home. We love to hear the little ways you celebrate life with your family and friends.
1. Love the “card tray”! I made one years ago with a collage of all of our Christmas cards we received the first Christmas we were married! I need to buy some convo hearts for my candles now, too!! Love that idea.

4. Thanks Kay, Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays. My kids tease me that I am such a hearts and flowers kind of girl. Since I too have quite a collection of those items that I keep out year round, it isn’t too difficult to decorate for that special dinner with those I love. Have a wonderful evening, and share a photo if you get a chance. Thanks again.
