There is a lot of visual chatter in my home (hey, what do you expect from a blogging decorator?). When decorating a room, I first decide what I want the room to “say” (so to speak) on first impact.  So I figure why not spell it out as well…literally?  Reinforcing ambiance with literary impact is a fun way to add some definition to a space.   In fact, I’m wearing my favorite Brighton earrings that say “Inspire” as I write this blog post!  Here are some ways I’ve used words in my home (click pics to enlarge):

Because my office serves many purposes, I actually added the word “Work” to remind me what I’m supposed to be doing in there.

Because my office is actually off my bedroom, I added “Dream” in the bedroom as a visual cue that I have indeed left the office.

I also added “Spa” to my bathroom to remind myself to relax.

I’ve used “Café” in the kitchen.

And “Welcome” on the family room mantel.

I use “Family” on the family piano.

And who says you can’t buy love?  I’ve got the four letter word to prove it!  Yes, I bought me some “Love” at T.J. Maxx.  The cashier and I shared a good laugh over that one!  I bring that one out for Valentines Day (which is also my anniversary!).

I find decorative words helpful in home staging as well…why not help the buyer catch the feel of a home with a little cue card!

What does your décor SAY? (Or, what do you WISH it said) ;)

LOVE IT Do you LOVE IT?

1. a month ago I visited Home Goods and found a wall decoration that I should have purchased. When I went back the next week it wasn’t there. I’m looking for a Family Tree that has a plaque that says Memories,on the trunk of the tree and several different size frames on different branches for family photos. It’s on the large side exactly what I need for a lonely wall. Can you help?

3. I wish my decor said “Self-Cleaning!” unfortunately that hasn’t happened yet. More than anything though comfortable and welcoming is what I try to have it say.

7. I love how you defined your spaces with cues for their intended purpose. I think, or I hope, my decor says Live, Laugh, and Love ~ I want those who cross out thresh hold to feel an air of welcome and comfort that says, “Come on in a live awhile here.” I want the background music of my home to ring with tunes of laughter, small intimate giggles, little chuckles, and big booming belly laughs that say, “Joy lives here!” I want my home to exude love from every vignette the eye rests upon, to the sofa or bed one reclines upon, to the feel of the floors beneath ones feet, to the scent of food that we eat, I want my home to say, “I love you!”

8. Hi Deidra, Me too!

Sandy – They are sort of cue cards for me -reminds me when I have left the office! LOL I love your vision for your home! There are so many ways to cue our senses. In fact, I just made chocolate chip cookies…what a handy and tasty way to define a space!

9. Words, words… of all of my signs, my favorite is a 5 foot long narrow barnwood sign that reads “Be it ever so humble there’s no place like home” . I can’t live without it!
