Decorating your bedroom is indeed an art form. But so is sleeping! I’m always envious of those who fall asleep easily, stay asleep all night, and wake up perky in the morning (5 minutes BEFORE their alarm clock goes off). Aren’t they annoying? LOL
For the rest of us “sleep-challenged” folks, there may be simple reasons why we’re not sleeping through the night. Perhaps your bedroom is not sensual enough.
Think about your five senses (we’ll leave the famous sixth sense alone for this exercise). Is there something you can change in your bedroom that might help you?
Sight
- Darkness – make sure curtains block enough light, and check room electronics – they can put out a lot of light! Consider power strips to turn them off and save energy while you sleep (but not the alarm clock!).
- Keep your décor minimal and with a clear focal point (typically the bed) to allow your eyes to rest. Avoid the temptation to go crazy with accent pillows as they can make a room too formal. Seriously – you can have too many decorative pillows!
Sound
- It’s difficult to fall asleep in a bedroom that is too noisy OR too quiet. But the solution is the same in both cases. Consider adding a fan for some white noise.
Touch
- Sheets matter – go silk or high percale. You and your quality of sleep are worth it! Consider flannel for winter months.
- Temperature. Ever wake up cold in the middle of the night? Lay a quilt at the bottom of the bed in a tri-Z fold so you can pull it up without fully waking up. 3 am is not the time to negotiate a fold in a blanket!
- If you have wood or tile floors, add a soft area rug to greet your morning feet.
Taste
- Keep a glass or bottle of water handy.
Smell
- Scented candles or flowers (if not allergic) can add a layer of aromatherapy to the room. I’m also a fan of pillow sprays.
What other ways can you make your bedroom more sensual?
1. Great post Susan,
I’ll have to try a few of these sleep inducing ingredients. I don’t sleep well and I don’t know why. Too much going on in my mind. How do you turn off your mind at night? I wish there was a switch LOL.
Thanks for all your ideas.
Sweet Dreams!!!

3. Any ideas on a small bedroom with the old double wooden white sliding doors which are ugly and do not work well. They swing on the bottom. I have taken them off and would like any other suggestions on possible replacments. The room is too small for any open french type of doors and the closet is the standard 1 standard pole for jackets, shirts ect and a 12 inch deep shelve on top.
Any suggestions on how to replace the doors…Possible curtains?
thanks

5. Hi Cathy – try a glass of wine at bedtime, and perhaps a few relaxing yoga stretches before bed! Sweet dreams to you too!
Hi Melissa – I think modern can be very elegant! I like modern styles for the bedroom because they are uncluttered. Just be sure to use some warm tones so it doesn’t feel stark. Why don’t you start by picking a color palate. Find some fabric you love and take cues from that.

6. I added a bamboo blanket to my king size bed, it’s lightly quilted and keeps me cold in summer and warm in winter without needing comforters or heavy bedspreads, It is also very sensual, feels wonderful. I recently repainted the bedroom and have cut out the clutter. It feels very serene and restful now and very conducive to sleep. (I used to have piles of magazines around!)

7. Hi Glen, curtains are a great alternative to doors when closets are in tight spaces. I would lean towards a netural fabric that blends well with the walls.
Hi Judy – your bedroom sounds fabulous!

8. Love your ideas Susan – the picture you have shown with Sensual Bedrooms — do you have photos of the whole room? Where can I find the bedding featured? HomeGoods? Thank you for any assistance you can give.

9. Hi Joy, no, that’s the only picture I had of that. I don’t know where the bedding came from, but it’s a good example of how adding a mix of pillows can warm up a neutral base. Did you notice how the headboard tied into the texture also?
